[mou-net] Lake Byllesby Dakota/ Goodhue County

2018-04-21 Thread Jason Caddy
The spectacle on Lake Byllesby tonight was amazing! There were hundreds of
waterfowl of many species including a large variety of ducks in numbers and
vast quantities of coots and swans. There were also a lot of Horned Grebes and
over 100 Bonaparte's Gulls. Two Greater White-fronted Geese were there but at
the far western edge of the lake in the usual shorebird spot, away from most of
the other birds. We didn't even see the Cinnamon Teal but it was still well
worth the trip! There were also a ton of water birds at Fort Snelling Stated
Park where 494 crosses over but I did not have time to investigate.

On the bird walk I led this morning at Roberts Bird Sanctuary there was a nice
variety of migrants but notable were the very large numbers of Fox Sparrow and
Hermit Thrush.

Happy spring migration!

[mou-net] Lake City

2018-04-21 Thread Elizabeth Tiller (Beth)
Near the wayside north of town:

Still hundreds of scaup (looked like lesser when they fly), ring-necks, some
canvasbacks, buffleheads, hooded mergansers.

duck highlight on Pepin: 24 Ruddy Ducks and 2 Eared Grebes

Duck highlight at Hok-si-la
About 20 wood duck drakes hanging out in the flooded forest
a couple pairs of blue-winged teal
1 pied billed grebe.

(And a bunch of unknowns when a car pulled in front of me and a guy got out in
a very obvious fashion, slamming car doors, etc., brandishing binoculars and
walking right up to the edge of the road and water and everyone else flew away.
Sigh. Cars can be such perfect blinds. )

[mou-net] Tundra swans Dakota Cty

(Posted by Chet A. Meyers via moumn.org)

Miriam ans I birded 140th to Byllesby. The lake still has some
ice on it which should be gone by late Sunday. A good variety
of ducks and 4 lesser yellowlegs. On 280th just wet of Randolph
we found a "bunch" of tundra swans 400-500 but could find not
one white-fronted goose or snow goose tucked in among them.

As an update, the adult male cinnamon teal is visible right now from the
goodhue county boat launch (44.5157,-92.9884). Settled in to rest on the ice on
the goodhue county side but was in Dakota earlier. Lots of other more typical
goodies as well.

[mou-net] Waterfowl Carlos Avery Chisago Co.

2018-04-21 Thread Deters, Marshall (DNR)
There were many waterfowl, from buffleheads to swans, at the Carlos Avery South
Pool this morning. The pool is still mostly frozen, the birds are concentrated
in the open water above the dam.
Take Stacy Trail (Co Rd 19) east from Stacy about a mile and then take the
first sand road to the south (right).

The gates on the Anoka County side are still closed to motor vehicles, and
probably will be for at least another week. The roads are in poor condition for
vehicle travel. But it is a great time to walk or take to your fat bike to
experience the sights, sounds, and scents of spring.

[mou-net] Ross’s and Snow Geese - Chisago County

2018-04-21 Thread Erik Collins
There are about two dozen Snow Geese and at least two Ross’s Geese in a wet
field on 420th St, east of Forest Blvd. in Chisago County. They’ve spent most
of their time tucked in, so it’s hard to get an exact count. Several duck
species present, too.

[mou-net] Cinnamon teal, lake byllesby, dakota.

2018-04-21 Thread Justin Watts
Looking at a cinnamon teal right now on lake byllesby. South East from
cemetery, not sure if visible from boat launch across the lake from cemetery
yet but that might be much closer.
