[mou-net] Special MOU Field Trip Guest Starring Bob Janssen

2019-03-14 Thread Josh Wallestad
Greetings Birders!

John Hockema and Kimberly Emerson are hosting a very special field trip in
Rock County the weekend of April 12-14 to honor and HELP the legendary Bob
Janssen achieve a major birding milestone. Bob Janssen has seen at least
225 bird species in every Minnesota county except one--Rock County. This
is an invitation to join an effort to help Bob achieve yet another amazing
milestone during his lifetime of county listing. This trip offers the
opportunity to celebrate the life and contributions of one of the state's
finest ambassadors to birds by exploring the back roads of Rock County. It
will be together that we get to say 'thanks' to Bob for sharing his
lifelong dedication to birds with all of us.

Some of the target species include Tundra Swan, Cackling Goose, Wild
Turkey, Willet, Osprey, Pileated Woodpecker, and Smith’s Longspur. Bob
only needs 3 species to reach his goal.

Many hands make light work, so all are welcome. Those attending are asked
to RSVP to fieldtr...@moumn.org by April 1st so John and Kim have an idea
of how many people will be attending and so they can assign search areas
and target species accordingly. The search will begin Friday, April 12th and
run through Sunday the 14th. Join the fun for one day or all!

We had a robin at the farm this morning. We never have had one this early
before.

We still had two pine grosbeaks this morning and this was the first morning
with no common redpolls. The rain removed the remainder of snow from the top
of the bald eagle next on County Road 88 north of Ely and two adults were on
the nest this morning. Also this morning, I joined others who were watching
common goldeneyes courting on Shagawa River above where it crosses CR 88.

The SPAS mtg is cancelled due to a water main break. Fairview Commy Center is
closed. Dunlap's talk might be rescheduled.

MOU listserv readers

Bob Dunlap will present at SPAS this month. His talk includes historical and
updated records of bird distributions in Minnesota. There are many changes in
the state's avifauna, affecting different counties and even presence/absence in
the state as a whole. Some birds are extirpated, some nearly so, and others
have occurred recently with more than "accidental" or "occasional" frequency.

You don’t need to be an Audubon or SPAS member to attend and meetings are
always free.

[mou-net] Pine Grosbeaks

2019-03-14 Thread Juile Grahn
It looks like at least some Pine Grosbeaks are heading back north. We have had
a good size group visiting our feeders all winter. We had big southerly winds
on the 12th and we only had one show up that day and none since. Some others
in surrounding areas have mentioned they are noticing the same thing.
