[mou-net] Horned Grebes on Lake Phalen and Lake Gervais on Monday, 4/29

2019-04-29 Thread Keith Carlson
A solitary Horned Grebe was foraging along the northwest shore of Lake
Phalen. Also saw one along the northwest shore on Lake Gervais, both in
Ramsey County.

Other waterfowl on Phalen included:

Shovelers
Buffleheads
Common Loon
Cormorant, and
Blue wing Teal

Probably some Scaup and Ring necked Ducks too but they were to far out to
positively ID

Ruddy ducks were on Gervais

[mou-net] Eastern Towhee in the city

2019-04-29 Thread mou
(Posted by Travis Bonovsky via moumn.org)

Doing some yard work shortly before noon on Saturday, April 27th I heard a most
unusual
bird song for my neighborhood in southern Brooklyn Center (just 2 blocks north
of Mpls).
Eastern Towhee calling his “drink your tea” Song over and over. Eventually
caught a short
glimpse of him in my neighbors crabapple tree directly across the street. A
fantastic yard bird
for me, no doubt just passing through.

[mou-net] Ramsey County, St. Paul sora

2019-04-29 Thread Susan Tertell
This morning I was astonished to see a sora at the Menard's in St. Paul.
It was in the outdoor nursery and just walking around pretty calmly looking
for things to eat. It has to be my most unusual spotting!

[mou-net] Afton State Park birds & question about cold weather effects on bird activity level

2019-04-29 Thread Keith Carlson
Saw the following of note (to me) at Afton State Park, Afton, MN on Saturday

Ruby-crowned Kinglet
Yellow Bellied Sapsucker

I also hiked/birded the School Forest In Linwood, Anoka County on Sunday.
In both instances, I was really surprised about the quiet and inactivity of
the birds given the time of year. Did the cold and low pressure preceding
the rain contribute to that? I would have expected the woods to be alive
with the "peeps" of Yellow-rumped Warblers but I only heard a few (i think)
at Afton and the same at the School Forest where at least I saw one
juvenile. Other than that I heard a few Red-Bellied Woodpeckers and maybe
a Song Sparrow and heard and saw some Robins at Afton and heard and saw
some Robins at the Linwood School Forest besides hearing a few Yellow
rumped Warblers and seeing the one. Was it the weather? Or was it still a
little early for the Yellow-rumpeds?
