[mou-net] Update on the Lesser Goldfinch in Warren and access/parking

2019-12-11 Thread HvHughes
The Lesser Goldfinch was spotted and photographed on Sunday, December 8 at
4pm; Monday intermittently between 1 and 4pm; Tuesday at 11:30 and
intermittently between 1 and 4pm; and on Wednesday 7:50am, 8:30am; 9:35am
and 10:30am.An immature Golden Eagle flew over 11am, a small flock
Bohemian Waxwings were spotted at 4pm and a Red-winged Blackbird was
spotted throughout the afternoon.

Access and parking: Please do *not* park anywhere on 190th street NW.

There is plenty of parking at the NW Minnesota Pollinator Garden (27596
19th St NW). Please do not block the entrance or the Pollinator Garden
driveway.

Please honor the yellow "DANGER" sign on the east side of the Pollinator
Garden near the canal - and do not attempt to access the birdfeeders from
the footbridge behind the danger sign. The footbridge over the canal is
*unsafe* - and any human activity in that area will spook the birds at the
feeders where the Lesser Goldfinch has been hanging out.

Please do *not* park in the driveway at 27499 190th Street NW - and do *not*
park at 27391 190th Street (the entrance to the former Wetlands Pines and
Prairie Sanctuary). There is a red gate at 27391 190th Street NW - and a
sign that says: unauthorized access prohibited. Please honor that sign -
Please do *not* walk around the red gate to access the property.

The Lesser Goldfinch visits the feeders hanging between the yellow garage
and yellow house at the end of the driveway at 27499 190th Street NW.
Please walk from the NW Minnesota Pollinator Garden parking lot to 190th
Street NW and continue a short distance east to 27499 190th Street NW -
then head south down the driveway. There is a sign at the entrance to the
driveway that says: Unauthorized access is prohibited.
Bird-watchers are authorized to access the property to observe the Lesser
Goldfinch.

Please do *not* walk past (or around) the wire "line" that marks the end of
visitor access - near the end of the driveway.
We will also scatter cracked corn at that location. You are welcome to set
up a chair on the north side of that line in the driveway.

The Lesser Goldfinch has also been spotted at the foot of the large Black
Willow on the east side of the driveway (your left as you walk in) near the
yellow garage. There is a cardboard box (an improvised windbreak) at the
base of the Black Willow. The bird has been spotted in the grasses near
the cardboard box. He has also been spotted in the Box Elder stump growth
near the dumpster at the end of the driveway. You can spot the bird easily
with binoculars - please do not walk around the yard, the dumpster or the
rickety bridge to the west.
Please stay in the driveway north of the wire line.

Please do *not *walk towards the house - or the garage. That will spook
the birds.

It is very cold. Dress for the weather. If the bird is not spooked, you
may not have to wait long to see it. But if the bird is spooked, you may
want to sit while you're waiting - so bring a folding chair and dress for
very cold temps. If it is windy, it will be very, very cold.

Please don't walk around the farmyard. Visitor access is restricted to the
driveway, north of the wire line.

If you have questions, please call 218-745-5663.

Thank you.

Re: [mou-net] Lesser Goldfinch update

2019-12-11 Thread Anthony Hertzel
Bird was seen today up to about 10:30 this morning by at least five birders.
Then spooked and flew over the home and out of sight and did not reappear.

[mou-net] Varied Thrush - Carlton County

2019-12-11 Thread Kimberly Emerson
A varied thrush has been coming to a feeder in Cromwell for a couple of
weeks. Homeowners are allowing visitors.

Here are the directions given by Josh McMahon via Facebook:
You are welcome to just show up. It is coming to his parents house at 1531
West Island Lake Road in Cromwell. It seems to be around most consistently
in the middle of the day.

You can go around either side of the house as it mostly hangs out in a
maple tree or the berry tree next to the feeder on the lake side.

Also, they have an English setter that might be out, but he is friendly.

The varied thrush was seen today.

[mou-net] Christmas Bird Counts

2019-12-11 Thread Steve Weston
Join us for the 120th annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count, which will be
held on dates from December 14th through January 5th at over 80 locations
throughout the state. There is still time to get involved. Even new birders
can have a significant impact on many of the counts. We can pair you with
an experienced birder and you will learn much about local birds and birding
locations.

Some of the birds I have personally found on CBCs in and around the Metro
Area include Harlequin Duck, Long-tailed Duck, Great Black-backed Gull,
Iceland Gull, Goshawk, Gyrfalcon, Prairie Falcon, Saw Whet, Snowy, Great
Gray, Northern Hawk, and Long-eared Owl, Red and White-winged Crossbill,
Varied Thrush, Townsend's Solitaire, and Spotted Towhee. Only the
Gyrfalcon, which flew by at eye level 100 feet away, and the Prairie Falcon
had been seen in the area previously.

Southern counts that need help include Albert Lea (12/22), Fairmont
(12/19), Jackson County (12/14), Lamberton (12/21), Winona (12/14),
Faribault (12/14), Wabasha (12/29), and Rochester (12/14). Most counts in
the Metro Area are in good shape, but St. Paul North (12/14) still needs
team leaders. Bloomington (12/14) can still fit a few counters in and Cedar
Creek Bog (12/15), which usually turns away volunteers can fit a couple.
Counts to the north that need counters include Tamarac (12/18), Alexandria
(12/28), Kensington (12/14), Grand Rapids (12/15), and Hibbing (1/1). New
counts Mille Lacs South (1/3) and Munger (12/23), just west of Duluth need
counters to help them get started.

To find information on counts go to http://moumn.org/CBC/locations_map.php
