Also, present at this location was a Least Bittern. At one time the two

There may be a need to improve communication between these two Minnesota

I just noticed on the Minnesota Birding Facebook site that a birder
 named
Brian Plath spotted this warbler in his backyard today (no time given
 or
address) outside Austin, MN. A photo depicting the bird was attached
 to
   the sighting.

I am seeing a trend that many Minnesota birders who are not Facebook
members are not knowing about casual or accidental sightings that have
shown up in Minnesota. For example the Eurasian Tree Sparrow was posted
initially on Facebook another Facebook site then shared on the Minesota
Birding Facebook site. After 2-3 days this sighting eventually made to
  the
MOU newsletter. This is not the first time this has happen where I
 see a
significant sighting being posted on Minnesota Birding but it took 1-3
  days
after the initial sighting, the sighting was shared to the MOU
 listserv.

Hopefully the administrators of Minnesota Birding on Facebook can
 discuss
about sharing casual and accidental bird sightings in MN to the MOU
   listserv on a timely basis.

Has anyone else besides me notice this trend? Maybe it's not a big deal
  but
I thought I share this for discussion.

What is your most surprising bird of the (half) year?

Mine would have to be the (lifer) Chuck's-wills-widow that visited our
Kansas backyard the first week we moved here from central Minnesota; then
it, of course, hasn't dropped by audibly or visibly since.

(Unless, of course, it was the surfeit of shorebirds that graced Princeton
Sewage Ponds our last week or so in Princeton, adding new county birds not
seen in the previous nine years there. Nice to have godwits and avocets
 dropping bye to say goodbye.)

[mou-net] Tufted Titmouse - Lake of the Woods Co.

2012-05-29 Thread Andrew Nyhus
Hi All --

On Thursday (May 24th) I was doing some birding up north. I was driving
along CR 8 northwest of Baudette. I stopped to check out some ducks in an
inlet along the road and clearly heard the Peter Peter Peter call of a
Tufted Titmouse. I am very familiar with this bird in Winona county where I
live and hear them calling regularly. It was loudly calling from the woods
in this area (GPS 48.764365,-94.677193). I played a titmouse call on the
ipod to see if the bird would come out into view. It never did that I could
see. I did seem to move around because the sound changed intensity and
location. I was there listening to it for 5 to 10 minutes. I would love to
know if that is what I heard. If someone is in this area or going to this
area I would encourage you to investigate this. From what I can tell this
would be a first county record for Tufted Titmouse in Lake of the Woods
county.

Thanks
Andy

[mou-net] Tufted Titmouse - Lake of the Woods

2012-05-29 Thread Andrew Nyhus
Hi All

I've gotten some great responses from a few people so far. Carolina Wren
and Baltimore Oriole have been added to the list of possible culprits.

For the record I have not added Titmouse to my Lake of the Woods list. I
wrote it off as undecided.

As frustrating as it can be I still love the learning process I am open
to more suggestions regarding this topic.

Andy

[mou-net] Hooded Warbler - Wabasha Co

2012-05-17 Thread Andrew Nyhus
I found a first county record Hooded Warbler at the kruger trail area in
wabasha county at 10:30 this am. when entering kruger stay to the left and
drive back to the shelter. park here and walk back on the trail staying to
the right at the Y. walk to the first bridge. the bird spent much time in
the canopy singing. it was not acting like a migrant bird but more like a
potential nesting bird.

[mou-net] Stilt Sandpiper - Winona Co

2012-04-25 Thread Andrew Nyhus
I want to modify my post from yesterday. A combination of lack of
experience and poor lighting led me too overestimate the number of birds I
saw. I tried using mainly bill shape to determine what I was seeing. at
most there were a half dozen still sandpipers on the mudflats and the
remainder were pectorals. The learning process is fun but humbling

[mou-net] Stilt Sandpiper - Winona Co.

2012-04-24 Thread Andrew Nyhus
I counted 70 Stilt Sandpipers at the lewiston sewage ponds today. there
were also greater and lesser yellowlegs, killdeer snipe to be seen.

for those of you who aren't aware the remaining pond is being dried up. it
is about half water and a half mud now. the next few weeks should be
amazing for shore birds. get here this year because next year it will be
gone.

[mou-net] Northern Mockingbird - Cook County

2011-05-14 Thread Andrew Nyhus
Saw a Northern Mockingbird just north of Grand Marais. Location is just off
Hwy 61 north of town near small apartment complex and small yellow house
with bird feeder. There were many White-crowned Sparrows, White-throated
Sparrows, Chipping Sparrows and one Lincoln's Sparrow at the feeder. I saw
the mockingbird across the neighbors yard perched on a branch for close to a
minute. Had full frontal view through spotting scope then he turned to the
side and I saw the long tail and white wing markings.

Also on the trip up here today saw 3 Peregrine Falcons, a Blackburnian
Warbler and a few Ruby-crowned Kinglets. Beautiful day here in Grand Marais.
I'll be damned if I can find a House Sparrow though. This is my first
trip to Cook County and I need one for my county list. :)
