[mou-net] Varied Thrush still present in Duluth
Hi everyone, I heard from the homeowner at 5554 Howard Gnesen Road that the Varied Thrush, first reported on November 27, was seen again this morning after their return from a 9-day trip. The bird hadn't been present during the days before their departure so the new sighting comes as an unexpected surprise. The homeowner still welcomes visitors although the bird (so far) might not be coming to the feeders as frequently as before. fyi, and Happy New Year! Thanks for your report of Duluth sightings, Joshua. I heard my FOY Hermit Thrush on the grounds of the College of St. Scholastica a couple of days ago. Haven't seen one yet, but I'm always completely satisfied to hear that song! Duluth's golden-crowned sparrow was seen twice yesterday: once in the morning, then again at around 3:30 p.m. I scattered seed on our deck last night and have seen the bird again today between 12 and 12:30 p.m. This is the first that I have seen the bird on consecutive days since December. The immature golden crowned sparrow made one of its infrequent visits to our feeder this morning at around 7:45. It was the first sighting of the bird since January 19. The immature golden crowned sparrow made a brief appearance in our yard just before 8:00 this morning. It perched in a tree near our patio (on the alley) before flying in the direction of College St. For what it's worth, the bird was fairly vocal when it was in the yard on Saturday morning, sounding its call note every 5 or 10 seconds. Found at about 1:00 p.m. near the Hartley Nature Center. It perched from several trees near the visitors' center before flying in the direction of the reservoir. There was also a small flock of White-winged crossbills which could be seen/heard near the parking area by the center. I found a Green Heron working its way around the pond at the Bagley Nature Area (UMD) this afternoon at around 4:00 p.m. I had read some time ago that this might be a good place to spot this species, but this was the first luck that I have had after quite a few visits there.
