Seen today at 8:00 AM - two Upland Sandpipers next to the second set of white lines on the left side of runway. These birds nest at the airport. A nice bonus was a Northern Mockingbird on the very south end of the runway. A scope is a must. The best time for viewing is early morning. [mou-net] Greater White Fronted Geese Aitkin County
From the stop light in Aitkin go approx 3 miles north and turn right on Aitkin County Road 1. From there go approx 6 miles on 1 and there is a T in the road. Take a right on 1 and go for approx 1 mile east (you're still on 1), then take a left on Aitkin Cty Rd 1 for approx 3/4 of a mile. On the left side of the road is a rice paddy loaded with Tundra Swans, Canada Geese many species of ducks and approx 100-200 Greater White Fronted Geese. Jo Blanich and I saw these GWFG yesterday, my wife and I as well as Ron Erpelding saw them today. Jo Blanich mentioned to me yesterday that in approx 40 years of birding Aitkin County Road 1 she has never seen this many Tundra Swans let alone the GWFG. I would estimate 2,000 TS. [mou-net] Aitkin County Waterfowl
Waterfowl seen yesterday: Tundra Swans, Canada Geese, Am Wigeons, Gadwalls, Wood Ducks, Pintails. Ring Necked Ducks, Green Winged Teal and Mallards. Also, Sandhill Cranes, Kestrels, Northern Shrikes, Rough Legged Hawks, Tree Sparrows, and the usual. 1.) From the stop sign in Aitkin go approx 3 miles north and turn right on Aitkin Cty Rd 1 for approx 5 miles and turn left on 430th ave for approx 100 yards. Rice paddies on north of road are loaded with Tundra Swans (one needs a scope). I am thinking approx 2,000 swans and I am sure many more. Then continue on Aitkin Cty Rd 1 for approx 5 miles and turn right (east) on 450th st for approx 1.5 miles rice paddies on south are loaded with above mentioned birds. 2.) After having lunch at the Palisade Cafe go south on Aitkin Cty Rd 5 for approx 1 mile turn right on 470th st and go west for 1 mile then turn left on 310 ave for approx 1/2 mile and on the left side of road in a stand of ash trees is an active Black Billed Magpie nest. Yesterday I saw 5 BBMP around the nest. When driving on Aitkin Cty Road 1, one will not believe the number of Swans and Ducks on the move. Also, on the Cedar Brook road which is Cty Rd 15 east of Aitkin, turn left at the bridge. There I saw a pair of Trumpeter Swans on Cedar Brook, one was banded 4M7. Also, from the stoplight in Aitkin, go north on State Hwy 169 for approx 5 miles and turn right on Aitkin Cty Rd 56 (east) for 2 miles. Then turn right (south) on 350th ave for approx 1/2 mile and on east side of road it is loaded with Tundra Swans and the above mentioned waterfowl. Two days ago I had an American Bittern on 56 which was a nice treat. Hopefully my directions are correct; I am not really good at posting. I used to bird with Warren Nelson and he always posted. [mou-net] Felton Prairie
I went to Felton Prairie today and had a great day. My route from Crosby was 210 to Brainerd and HWY 10 west to County Road 9 (Clay County). North on County Road 9 to County Road 26. East on County Road 26 approx. 3 miles to 170th Street North, then north on 170 Street North. The following birds were observed: Chestnut Collared Longspur: (1) Seen by the natural gas pipes located on the west side of the road. On the east side of road across from gas pipes are located approx 8 fence posts in a square configuration connected with barbed wire. The Male Longspur was seen in the grass between the fenced-in area and 170th Street North, and on the barbed wire connecting the fence posts. This is right next to the road and provided unbelievable looks to say the least. Marbled Godwits: (6) Seen all along 170th Street North. One was on a fence post on the west side of the road, and the rest were seen on the east side of road in the grass. I watched one Godwit right next to the road dig three worms out of the soil and eat them - completely oblivious to me in the car. I also observed Marbled Godwits chase and dive bomb a Marsh Hawk that was apparently too close to the nesting area. Scanning the east side of the road with my binoculars produced these great looks: Hudsonian Godwit: (1) Located on east side of road. Greater Prairie Chickens: (4) Located on east side of road. Other Notable Birds: Horned Larks, Western Meadowlarks, Barn, Northern Rough-winged and Tree Swallows, Double-crested Cormorants (10-15), Mallards, Canada Geese. Fly-overs on Hwy 10: White Pelicans (6) just west of Detroit Lakes and Sandhill Cranes (2) just west of Pillager. A big thank you to Bob O'Conner of Moorhead, Mn. for pointing me in the right direction of the Chestnut-Collared Longspur. Butch Ukura P.S.
