[mou-net] Lark Sparrows in Olmsted County

2010-06-13 Thread Chris Benson
The area Bob Ekblad described off the minimum maintenance road
is the Stonehedge edition.
This is off Olmsted County 22 East at Stonehedge Dr NE.
This is where the NE Mayo Clinic is.
The birds can be found throughout the neighborhood
but are most easily found at the end of Stone Point Dr NE.
Lark Sparrows are also on Tee Time Road SE,
from US 14 and Marion Rd SE/15th Av SE go east on
US14 and take the 2nd right. This is the Hundred Acre Woods
edition, though there are not 100 acres of woods.
Tee Time is the main road in the subdivision and the
Lark Sparrows are at the end of the road. Bank Swallows
are at the last intersection on Tee Time, a small
colony in a small exposed sandstone outcrop.
The sparrows might also be on Old Town Hall Rd SE,
they were here last year. Just go east on 14
from Tee Time to the next right. This is the
intersection of US 14 and Olmsted County 22 East.

[mou-net] Northern Mockingbirrd, Olmsted County

2009-09-30 Thread Chris Benson
A Northern Mockingbird just flew out of the grapes in my backyard.
It went across the street and I could hear it call briefly before I
went back inside.

My address is 1495 Sunset Avenue SE, Rochester.
507-289-2246 home/507-269-1282 cell.

Directions: US 14 East to Marion Rd SE (County Rd 36),
go south on Marion Rd to Park Ln SE (1st stoplight),
turn left and follow Park Ln to 24th Ave. Take a 135 degree
left turn on 24th (going N) follow to 15th St SE. Turn right,
going E and follow up the hill to Sunset, turn left. I'm the 2nd house.
There is a park across the street and it looked and sounded like
it was headed that way or to the neighborhood on the south side
of the park.
Nice yard bird...
Sapsuckers, Flickers, Catbird, Hummingbird all still around...

The Northern Mockingbird 2 miles north of

Really easy bird, hung out in the orchard next

Also added a new yard bird yesterday when
2 Common Loons flew over the house, good

[mou] Mute Swans - Winona county

2008-01-04 Thread Chris Benson
At 1:30 this afternoon I saw 2 Mute Swans in a small
open lead on the Mississippi River along US 61
a couple miles south of Winona.
The exact location was at the junction of US 61 and
Winona County Road 15.
This is 1/4 mile or so south of the Bunnell House.
I did not have a scope so I wasn't able to tell if the birds
had leg bands or other marks indicating the birds
had escaped from capitivity but as with all Mute Swans
their wildness is suspect...
For safety's sake be aware of the traffic speeding by at 65+ MPH
if you try for the birds.

[mou] Mou Seasonal Reporting Software

2007-08-14 Thread Chris Benson
John,

Chukar aren't countable.
They aren't truly wild birds, as they are considered
either released or escaped birds.
At one time there was a population in
the Ely area but they died out and the species was
taken off the list.
So just like the European Goldfinch that showed
up at my mother's house 2 or 3 years ago,
or the Emu that I've seen running around loose,
or the Ringed Turtle-Doves that are
about a mile from my house in Rochester they
aren't a countable bird.
But they're a whole lot of fun to see!!!

[mou] Pishing (or is it spishing)

2007-06-20 Thread Chris Benson
When my daughter was a baby I would pack her
up in a papoose and go birding with her.
When she would make baby noises the birds would
come in close for a better look.
Much better response than pishing,
I had the best looks I've ever had of such rarities as
Prairie Warbler and Summer Tanager,
not to mention all the more common birds.

So instead of pishing take a baby along,
from my experience it worked much better.

Looking forward to next spring when I'll have
a baby around to attract birds.

How effective do you find pishing to be?

Sometimes I think we pish just to keep ourselves busy while waiting for
the
target bird to pop up - seems like we can go days without the desired
response - then there are days like today, when casual pishing drew in
 Mourning, Golden-winged, Blue-winged, Chestnut-sided Warblers with little
effort (latter three in same tree).

Which leads to the questions of: How much should we pish? Are there
times
 when pishing should be avoided?

Wondering while working on Sunday's message about prayer,

[mou] Eurasian Collared-Dove, Winona County

2007-06-18 Thread Chris Benson
Acting on a tip I drove through Lewiston around noon today
and saw 4 Eurasian Collared-Doves.
Two of the birds were immature, they did not have the collar
on the back of the neck yet and weren't quite as soft gray
as an adult.
I first saw the immatures in a yard on the north side
of the Elementary School along Fremont Street, also known
as Winona County Road 29.
When the young birds took off the adults, who were in a yard
on the south side of the Elementary School joined them in flight
and flew north.
A few minutes later an adult bird - I don't know if it was a different
individual - was perched on the power lines directly east of the
Elementary School.
This bird was clearly an adult; the collar was clearly visible, the
bird was a soft/light gray, the tail was squared off,
and the undertail pattern (gray - black - white) was clearly visible.

To get to Lewiston:

From the west, take US 14 east out of Rochester for about 30 miles.
Turn right (south) on Winona County 29, also known as Fremont Street.
Go across the railroad tracks, the Elementary School 2 blocks down
on the right.
From the east, take US 14 west out of Winona for about 12 miles.
Take a left (south) at 29, etc.
I wouldn't focus only on this spot, the birds I saw all flew off to the north
but I wasn't able to track where exactly they went.

For all you SE birders, I apologize for not calling anyone.
My cell phone is not working.

Good Luck and Good Birding,

Greater White-fronted Geese and Ross' Goose
at South Landfill Reservoir.
Tundra Swans were there earlier today, may still
be in area feeding, while I was there the White-fronted's
came in low from the south so I'm thinking
they're feeding in a field not visible from 14th St NW.
The field is probably visible from US 14 but that's way too
dangerous to check.
Franklin's Gull at Silver Lake for the past couple days,
wasn't there at 3:30 this afternoon but it was there
yesterday at 6PM.

My father thinks he had a female Pine Grosbeak at
his feeder on Tuesday afternoon/evening. I did not see the bird
though I looked for an hour yesterday.
He can't find anything else that matches what
he saw in Sibley/Nat'l Geo or Peterson guides...
from his verbal description of the bird it
sounds to me as if it may have been.
Or it may not have. He's better with game birds
than non-game birds.

2 Valentine's Day Golden Eagles at the intersection of
MN 76 and Winona County 17.
One on either side of the highway, each perched high in
a tree just below the ridge line.
When the bird on the north side of the road decided to take
flight the other bird soon joined it.
Bright blue skies, brilliant golden heads gleaming in the sun.
Both birds were beyond first year plumage.
One of the most consistent spots for this species that I've
found, not a surprise to see them but always a welcome sight.

On Friday afternoon at 2PM a dozen gulls flew from
the east end of Black Dog Lake north over the river
channel into Hennepin county.
I was a little too far away and was driving on Black Dog
Road with traffic behind me so I was not able to stop
and positively ID any of the gulls but my hunch is that if
someone would be in the right place they'd be
able to watch the Slaty-backed fly into Hennepin,
thus making it a new bird for Hennepin county...

2007-01-25 Thread chr...@fullcircleimage.com (Chris Benson)
The Gyrfalcon was seen at 4:30PM at the field on the south
side of 180th St.
It was perched on the irrigation structure
that runs north - south, on the crossbar that
runs east - west.
At 4:36 PM it flew west over and across US 52,
then turned a bit to the northwest before I lost
sight of the bird.

Chris O'Byrne and I were able to relocate the following goodies on
Thursday:

MTN. BLUEBIRD - as reported previously along the N. side of 175th St., but
 unaccompanied by waxwings.

GYRFALCON - Along Dakota Cty Rd. 42, 3 telephone poles east of Jacob Ave.

We did not see any gulls at Prescott, nor were we able to pick out a
Barrow's Goldeneye from Prescott's Freedom Park, tho there huge numbers of
Goldeneye present, and we didn't give it a lot of time. Many of the birds
were distant. We also didn't see any gulls at Black Dog in the early
afternoon. We tooled around 14 and 42 in Wabasha County from about 3 to 4
PM, but were not able to refind the Snowy Owl.

Somehow took a 'wrong' turn on my way home
to Rochester from St Cloud this evening
and ended up at Carlos Avery around 5PM.
Just one wrong turn and whoops, I'm 40 miles
off course and in the middle of a wildlife refuge.
Funny how I didn't notice I wasn't on an interstate
until I was in the middle of a refuge.

It could happen to anyone, right?

More than a dozen Short-eared Owls.
Beautiful sunset.

[mou] Slaty-backed Gull Departure from Pt. Douglas, Washington County?

Subject: Re: [mou] Slaty-backed Gull Departure from Pt. Douglas, Washington
County?

Happened to stop by Point Douglas after 3:00 today and watched the rest of
the gulls leave the two open water spots in the lake. At 3:30 about 20 of
the gulls with the Slaty-backed Gull headed south on the St Croix past the
bridge and out of sight but with a few seconds the Slaty-backed Gull
doubled
back and rejoined the few gulls left on the open water holes. At 3:59 the
last 11 gulls with the Slaty-backed Gull following took flight heading to
the west and Spring Lake and I hoped Black Dog. The went far enough south
to cross into Dakota County (a county now with two different slaty-backed
records in the same year) but generally continued flying west until they
 went out of sight.

I went to Black Dog and joined Jim Mattson watching to see which gulls
came
down behind the plant at dusk. But as generally happens with me the gulls
all landed on the ice edge on West Black Dog Lake and were far enough away
that none were identifiable. There were not that many gulls, probably
less
 than 100.

In past years in late December and early January gulls would feed south of
the bridge at Point Douglas and were thought to go back to Black Dog at
night. It will be interesting to see if that pattern holds this late in
January. At 3:00 today there were no gulls south of the bridge chasing
the
goldeneyes, etc., although I didn't check Veterans Park. And where did
the
Slaty-backed Gull go? Was it at Black Dog and we were unable to see it?
Did it land at Spring Lake? I know that some waterfowl spends the night
at
Spring Lake and feeds further south in Dakota County around Vermillion
during the day. Remember the gyr hunting that waterfowl. But you rarely
see gulls south of Spring Lake.

A couple of days ago there were 250 gulls at Pt Douglas, including the
Slaty-backed, two different Glaucous. an adult Thayers, and a variety of
misc waterfowl. Wonder where they went? Keep your eyes open.

Stopped by the Olmsted county Snipe Spot
and was surprised to find not one but six (6)
Wilson's Snipe!
Remarkable to me not for the species,
which is seen at this spot every winter,
but for the number of birds.
Time to start checking all those springs,
what else could be over-wintering?
From Rochester take US 14 EAST to
Olmsted county road 10.
Take CR 10 to 15th St SE - about a mile -
and take a right going east to where
the spring fed creek crosses the road.
Look north into the spring.
The birds will be somewhere mixed in,
with luck they'll be in the green vegetation
so it'll be easy to find them.
This is right next to a couple of active farms
so make sure you leave room for the tractors.
The birds are easily seen from the road so
just stay in the car, you won't get stuff
on your shoes!

Sorry for the late report but I'm not connected at home.

At 1:37PM on December 31st, 2006 I saw a
Prairie Falcon at close range (100 feet) at the
junction of US 14 and US 218 on the east side of
Owatonna, or Oh! What a town, ah...

The bird was on a power pole on the SE quadrant
of the junction.
Coming from the south on 218 there is a power pole
that is very low, actually not visible from 14, that the
bird was sitting on in the rain/snow mix.
I was able to look at the bird for about 15 seconds
before it flew to the bridge deck, I last saw the bird
as it was perching under the west-bound span
of the bridge.

Note - I went back yesterday and searched the area
for 1 1/2 hours with my cousin but we did not relocate
the bird.

Good Luck, if anyone sees the bird in the area please repost!

I saw the Summer Tanager yesterday (11/20) at 10AM.
It was sitting in the lone small deciduous tree on
the side of the yard.
I saw no hint of red or orange tones on the bird,
suggesting it is a female.

There is a Summer Tanager regularly coming to a feeder south-southwest =
of Rochester. The home with the feeder is located in a sub-development =
west of the Willow Creek Golf Course that is located on 48th Street SW =
(which is south of the Hwy 52 and Hwy 63 interchange). I have =
communicated with the home owner and received permission to pass on the =
information,

  =20

To get there go south on Hwy 63 to the 48th Street off-ramp. Go west =
on 48th past 11th Ave and past the golf course on your left. When you =
see a sign for the road narrowing, turn left on Scenic View Drive (it is =
not too far past the golf course). Continue a short distance down that =
road and then turn left onto Teak Wood Lane (a dead end street). When =
you get to the highest point of this road there will be a vacant lot on =
the left. Park near the group of mailboxes just before the vacant lot =
(note that there is no parking on the north/west side of the street). =
The bird can be seen coming to the feeders on the post behind the house =
just after the vacant lot. You can look across the vacant lot to view =
the feeders from inside your car. It has been seen in the square =
open-top hanging feeder and also has been feeding from the wire mesh nut =
feeder hanging to the right.

Please be respectful of the home owner and the neighbors in the area.

Hey birders!

Ben Inniger and I looked for the Pomarine Jaeger this morning around 8am.
No such bird was found. We were there only 15 minutes or so, but two other
birders had been scanning for awhile already and had the same result. We
did see a couple of Wilson's Snipe and a variety of sparrows and blackbirds.

We also visited Cobb River WPA in southeastern Blue Earth County and found
some other shorebirds: Greater Yellowlegs, Killdeer, Wilson's Snipe,
Pectoral Sandpiper, and Semipalmated Sandpiper. A flock of 6 very subdued
Barn Swallows was also there hawking insects over the water.

Happy birding!

The 2nd year male Summer Tanager is
still present along the Blue Hill Trail in the
Sherburne NWR.
I watched him from 5 PM to 6PM.
Also saw - briefly - a female Summer Tanager.
The male was seen from the lower trail,
he was in the vicinity of the 15 - 20 foot high
burned snag that is on the right side (east) of
the trail. He spent most of his time high in the
treetops east of the trail.
The female was seen from the lower trail as
well but she was high in the trees over the upper trail,
then flew into a small bush in between the two trails.
The male did not vocalize, and I saw them interact
only once, and very briefly at that.
If the male hadn't been out in the open originally
I doubt if I would have seen him.
The biting insects are out in force, plan accordingly.

I just returned from viewing the Common Moorhens
at the Eastside WMA/CR 9 marsh.
They are focusing their activity on the small grassy
island located straight out from the viewing platform.
The island is located in between the two nest boxes
sticking out of the water.
I'm guessing that it's about 75 - 100 yards out.
There is no other vegetation within 100 feet of
the island.
As was mentioned before,
these are very cooperative birds!!!

Good birding,

To get to Beaver Creek WMA take US 63 south from
Spring Valley for about 8 miles.
Take a right, going west, at mile 2.
Go 2 miles west and the WMA should be on your right (north).
The parking lot, where the Short-eared Owls were
concentrated this winter will be on your right when you come
to the intersection.
In years past there's been more than one Henslow's Sparrows here.
Also of note, Upland Sandpipers used to be found
near the intersection east of the WMA, or in other words,
the intersection between the WMA and US 63.
Loggerhead Shrikes should be in the area somewhere,
if memory serves me correctly they've been seen both
to the north of here, between Spring Valley and the WMA
on the west side of 63 and also a couple miles east of 63.
Red-headed Woodpeckers are not rare in this area,
another bonus...

Although I don't personally use one down here it may
be a good idea to bring an atlas.

I arrived at Beaver Creek WMA in Fillmore County shortly before it =
began to rain hard this afternoon and heard at least one Henslow's =
Sparrow calling from the hillside on the east side of the North/South =
road that runs through the middle of the WMA. These roads don't seem to =
have any names so that's the best I can do. There is a clearing that =
starts at a yellow WMA sign and a brown no motorized vehicles sign and =
runs south to a large green metal gate. I believe this is the same WMA =
where Short-eared Owls were seen earlier this year and it is located in =
the far SW corner of the county. I literally stumbled onto it myself so =

Sunday, May 7th at 9AM my daughter and I saw a Eurasian Collared Dove
fly across Fillmore county road 8 on the east end of Fountain.
We briefly relocated it on 1st St. before it flew off again.

4 birds were relocated later in the day at the granary.

I believe this is a county first.

Collared Doves, coming soon to your county...

Fountain is located on US 52, 25 miles or so southeast of Rochester.

[mou] Snowy Owl, Olmsted county

I received a call yesterday about 7PM that a
Snowy Owl was found on Olmsted county road 2,
about 1 1/2 miles east of Rochester Century High School,
sitting atop a power pole.
When I arrived the bird was 1/4 mile north of the road,
sitting at the top of big willow.
I don't know how long the bird has been in the area,
or if it is still around...
If you feel like trying for it here are directions:

From the intersection of Viola Road (Olmsted 2)
and East Circle Drive (Olmsted 22) go 1 1/2 miles east
on 2. There are 2 big curves in the road, after the second
curve go 1/2 mile east. There is a fence line running north
with a big, broken willow along it. The bird was in this willow
at the top of the tree...
This is 3/4 mile west of County Road 11.

Good Luck!

This morning while going to work I saw a Snowy Egret
in a new pond at 41st St NW and West Circle Drive,
also known as County Road 22.
From the cities take US 52 south to the 41st St exit in Rochester.
Go west on 41st St. to the T at 22.
The pond and the bird are on the west side of the road.

Be careful, 22 is a busy road with a 55 MPH limit,
lots of traffic.

I observed a Snowy Owl in Mower County this afternoon.
The bird is along Mower County Road 20, about 1/2 mile
south of the Mower/Dodge County line, 500 feet east of the
road. The bird was along the edge of a plowed field and a field
with corn stubble standing. Crows were mobbing it when
I first heard about it at 12:30 PM and when I first saw it
at 2:20 PM. At 4:20 PM there were no crows to help
find the bird.

Mower County 20 turns into to Dodge County Road 9, so if
you're coming from the Rochester area it might be easier
to take US 14 to Dodge 9 and then go south.
From Austin take I-90 west to Mower 20, where the campground is,
and then go north nearly to the county line.

A field trip over the weekend produced some good birds:

Cackling Goose - Silver Lake, Rochester
Yellow-rumped Warbler - Lake Byllesbly (5)
Snowy Owl - MSP airport and Goodhue County 1, 1/4 mile south
of County 9.

We missed the Gyrfalcon. Checked the Hardman Avenue location
and saw 2 Peregrine Falcons, the business there has a tape
of Peregrines playing continuously so I'm assuming that's why
the live birds are around.

We also had a couple of other goodies.

Good Birding!

Sorry for the late post but I'm not online at home.

Friday, January 27th I observed a Short-eared Owl in
Olmsted county after following up on a tip from one
of the better birders out there.

The bird was in the usual spot, 20th St SW and 70th Av SW.
About a mile northeast of Salem Corners.

I am publicly thanking the board of the MOU for
the wonderful representation they have provided us.

Without compensation, and usually without a thank you
they are serving us very well, and treating each of
us as individuals with grace and respect.

I have learned much, and received far more than
I could ever hope to give back.

To donate so much time and wisdom
is a blessing for the rest of us in the birding
community, and I for one am grateful.

Here is hoping that each of them,
and each of us,
have a safe and healthy holiday season.

Cheers,

A Snowy Owl is standing on the garage roof
at 3609 7th St NW in Rochester.
The homeowner is OK with people coming to look
at the bird but please be respectful of
neighbors, lawns, privacy, etc.

The bird is visible from the street, the corner of 36th Av NW

The easiest way to get there is to take the CR 22 exit
off US 14 and go north for 1/4 mile to 7th St.
Go 2 blocks west to the stop sign, this is the
intersection of 36th Av and 7th St NW.

The bird appears to be an immature male.

Yesterday evening (10/4/2005) at 6:45 PM while swinging
at Joyce Park in SE Rochester my 2 year old
daughter asked me what the bird was that flew up
out of the grass surrounding the flood control pond.
To my amazement it was a Short-eared Owl,
the bird flew directly over our heads about
10 feet off the ground.
Perhaps more of us should play on swing sets.
Even if we don't see a good bird at least
we'll a have a lot of fun.

Another plug/plea for help at the State Fair booth.

You're a Minnesota birder. So that tells us a few things.
It tells us that you:

- go to the fair
- are THRIFTY because the fair is SPENDY
- eat food on a stick
- like to watch/ID birds

SO VOLUNTEER -=20

- you're going there anyway
- parking and admission would be free (a heck of a deal)
- I have no response to eating food on a stick but there's lots of it at =
the fair
- you can add to the fair list

You can even come before your shift or stay after your shift is over
and have FUN at the fair:
Drink all the milk you can drink.
Go to Machinery Hill.
Eat more food on a stick.
Talk to carnies.
Go to the Livestock barns.
Go to International Village.
See more exposed sunburnt flesh than God intended.
Console yourself by eating food on a stick.

It would be best for those wishing to bird the East
Kalmar Landfill Reservoir in Olmsted county to
stay on the public road on 70th Av NW and respect
the NO TRESPASSING signs posted around
the perimeter of the reservoir.
Although the birding can be great it is NO TRESPASSING
and we need to respect the law if we expect
others to do the same.

Directions from Rochester:
19th St NW west to 70th Av NW.
To get to the East Reservoir turn right and go 1/2 mile,
the reservoir is on your right.
To get to the South Reservoir go straight, in 1/2 mile the
reservoir will be on your left.

[mou] Sherburne NWR Auto Tour (report question)

2005-07-11 Thread chr...@fullcircleimage.com (Chris Benson)
Al,

Was it a Ruddy Turnstone?
They're molting and in basic plumage
are easily passed by as Killdeer or as
Killdeer that are a little different...

Look at the legs, a Turnstone's legs should
still be International/Blaze/Hunter Orange...

Subject: [mou] Sherburne NWR Auto Tour (report question)

Upland Sandpiper, Henslow's Sparrow, 104 AW Pelicans, two Trumpeter Swans,
few returning Least Sandpipers on the Auto Tour this morning.

Question: had a unique Killdeer this morning. The upper band was 2.5-3X
wider than the rest of its bands (unlike the other dozen or so Killdeer in
the area) and it was tipping continually like a Spotted. Has anyone else
noted such plumage or behavior (must admit I haven't studied Killdeer in
 depth)?

 Good birding to all!

At 11:30 this morning I heard and then saw a Eurasian Collared Dove
as I was exiting the First National Bank in Plainview, Wabasha county.
The bird was atop a television antenna at a private residence but
was easily heard and seen from the abandoned car wash at the corner
of West Broadway and 1st St NW.
I believe this is the first ECDO to be discovered in Wabasha county.

A person would want to talk to Mayo security before pointing
binoculars or a long lens at any of the Mayo buildings.
One may also want to inform law enforcement as they
may show an interest in such activities as well.
The hackbox is on the northeast corner of the Guggenheim

I spoke with a birder who is down at Prairie Island in Winona
and he told me that Bob Ekblad and Jeff Stephenson relocated
the Eurasian Wigeon this morning. From what I understand they
were the only people to see it before it flew off towards the main
channel of the Mississippi River.
Many birders including myself searched yesterday until dark and
were not able to find it then so the bird must be moving around.

To get to Prairie Island in Winona go to the junction of US 14 and US =
61.
Turn east at the stoplight, go through the stop sign (stop first!) and =
continue
around the curve. turn left at Prairie Island road, it's well marked.
After turning left continue on this road past the spillway.
Verchota Landing is past the spillway where the road bends back
to the left again...

I incorrectly identified one of the birders in this morning's post.
The identities of the birders were Jeff Stephenson and Bob Dunlap,
not Bob Ekblad.

[mou] Great Gray Owl in Winona county present at 6:30 PM last night

Went to see the Winona county Great Gray Owl with my daughter
last evening. In the fast fading twilight I wasn't able to relocate the
bird, had given up because of darkness and was beginning to make
a U-turn when the 2 year old voice from the backseat said:
I see the owl, Gray owl, right THERE!
Sure enough, she was right again. Good birders, those two year olds...
their powers of observation are incredible.
On county road 6, 1/2 mile east
of county road 33 the owl was sitting on a post overlooking a small
creek, reminding me of a Kingfisher...
I-90 east from Rochester, then south for 1/10 mile on MN 74.
Then east on Winona county 35 for 3.5 miles to the stop sign.
Then south - still on CR 35 to county road 6.
Then east on 6 to the intersection with CR 33.
I saw the bird 1/2 mile east of here, where the road goes over the =
creek.
You could also take 74 south to Troy and then take 6 east to the
intersection with 33, I would think that way a person would
have a chance at Golden Eagle...
weird that the owl would pick the farm country in the western half
of Winona county when the eastern half is heavily wooded...

[mou] Gyrfalcon thoughts - long

Yesterday's sighting of the Gyrfalcon was wonderful but
I need to give credit where credit is due.
When I originally saw the bird I was travelling west into the setting
sun and could only see a silhouette of a raptor perched atop
a utility pole in front of me. As I passed underneath the bird I
noticed that the back didn't have a white V that would
easily ID it as a Red-tailed Hawk. I also noticed that
the back was gray and that the wings were folded higher
up on the body than a hawk's would be.
Passing it and seeing it in the rear-view mirror I could see what
appeared to be a clean chest. I knew it was a Gyr only
because I study my field guides.
Chance favors the prepared mind. Study and read you field guides,
don't just look at the pretty pictures because no bird
in real life will ever look exactly like the field guide shows.
After the bird flew off I dismissed the chance of refinding it,
how many times can one catch lightning in a bottle?
A mile west of the original spot I noticed a flock of about
a thousand - no exaggeration - waterfowl swirling around a field.
I immediately thought of Mark Alt's recent post about falconers
and the comment that Gyrfalcon's are attracted to swirling flocks
of birds. And also thought to myself that nothing will get a flock of
birds up and swirling like a predator such as a Gyrfalcon.
And voila! There it was, perched atop a utility pole on the
edge of the field surveying the swirling madness.
I don't know if I would have refound the bird without that tip and
I need to send a big THANK YOU!!! out to Mark for sharing the
information about Gyr's and a big THANK YOU!!! to falconing
community for so generously sharing that information with Mark.

The Varied Thrush reported at 631 Toogood Ct SW in Rochester
was present at noon today, nice way to spend a lunch break.
It was visible from 6th Av SW feeding under the pole feeder in the =
backyard.
You can't see it from the front yard so look from 6th Av.
Please note that parking could be a problem.
The street is very narrow with no real good place to park.
And it is on a downhill curve so traffic doesn't have much
of a chance to work around you if you're not as focusing on
your surroundings as much as you are finding or viewing the bird.
Keep the Airfull Beak bird on your shoulder...

The Varied Thrush reported in Bloomington was
still present yesterday, 1/5/2005. I observed it
along 110th Street feeding on the ground next to
a telephone pole just as the Martin's had a few days ago.
I also saw a Merlin harassing crows near the
intersection of 102nd St and Penn.
My mother told me of a large owl in her backyard
yesterday morning but I didn't find anything...
she lives a block west of Olson Middle School.
The neighborhood looks ripe for a Great Gray...

Perched high in a Cottonwood on West River Road
100 - 200 yards south of Hy-Vee in Rochester.
Probably the same bird Carol Schumacher saw
on November 25th, it's about a half-mile south
of that location...
also watched a Sharp-shinned Hawk scaring up
lings at the corner of 2nd St NE and Broadway
in front of the Seniors Center, pretty cool.

Yesterday afternoon (10/17) around 2PM a Tufted Titmouse made
an appearance in my yard in Rochester.
I will be home during the day today if anyone wants to take a chance
that the bird will return.
My address is: 1495 Sunset Av SE
Rochester, MN

for directions you can call me on my cell phone 507-269-1282

I can't promise anything. Last fall and winter I heard one on and off
but this is the first encounter in many months. There is a wooded
city park across the street so it may be a resident in the nearby area.

At 2:15 this afternoon I saw a Loggerhead Shrike in Dodge county
sitting on a wire on 575th St, sixth tenths of a mile west of the
Dodge - Olmsted county line, otherwise known as Olmsted county road 5.

From Douglas go west on 75th St to the county line, go north for a 1/10 =
of a mile
on county road 5 to 575th St. and go west on 575th St for 6/10 mile.
From Byron take county road 5 north to 575th St., etc.
From US Hwy 52 I'm not sure how to get there due to all the =
construction,
I usually take 65th St NW to county road 3 north to 75th St...

The bird was 1/10 of a mile west of the radio tower on 575th St.
This is about a mile or two east of where I have been able to find
Loggerhead's for the past few years.
Also saw a couple Red-headed Woodpeckers on 75th St (Olmsted Co)
within a 1/2 mile of the county line.

Good to know there are still a few individuals of both species hanging =
on in the area.

While looking at the Black-necked Stilts at Spindler's Pond we saw a =

the shoreline, as well as many Short-billed Dowitchers and 3 Greater =
White-fronted Geese.

The location is on Steele County Road 19, 1/2 mile west of the entrance =

County Road 19 is the same as Rose Street in Owatonna, and the pond is =
6-8 miles east of Owatonna.

If you come to look use EXTREME CAUTION. This is a busy county road =

Paul Pedersen found an apparent Cinnamon Teal at the East Landfill =
Reservoir
west of Rochester just before noon today.
Thanks to Paul's call, Chuck Krulas, Jeff Stephenson and myself were =
also able to view the bird
before it flew southeast with a group of three Blue-winged Teal.
The birds flew over the dike and appeared to be cutting their wings
as if they were going to land when they disappeared from view.
A quick search of the immediate area along 19th St NW produced no =
positive results.
We didn't see any markings on the bird that suggested it was a hybrid
but one can't be too careful, we've had two hybrids here in the past =
couple years.
(And doesn't that open up another kettle of fish!)

The easiest way to get to the Reservoir from the cities is:
US Hwy 52 South to
US Hwy 14 West to
60th Av W (Olmsted County Road 104).
60th Av W north for one mile to 19th St NW.
19th St NW west for one mile to 70th Av NW.
70th Av NW for 1/2 mile.
The reservoir will on your right.
The bird was working the reeds on the south side when it was observed.

Yesterday John Hockema found a Ross's Goose at the west side of Silver =
Lake in Rochester.
The bird is fairly active, it could be next to the parking lot or on the =
other side of the lake.
Also at Silver Lake over the past two days were Hooded Merganser, =
Redhead, Ring-necked Duck,
Lesser Scaup and Black Duck.
At the south Landfill Reservoir (14th St NW and 70th Av NW) have been at =
least 24 Greater White-fronted Geese.
A Snow Goose was seen Saturday.
Robins and Red-winged Blackbirds are showing up in flocks.
John saw Rusty Blackbirds and Snipe yesterday as well...

In Dodge county a landowner reported that the Snowy Owl was seen as =
recently as Thursday
but it was a couple miles north of where it had been reported, so don't =
just check 690th St in between
140th Av (county Rd Y) and 150th Avenue, give the whole area a good =
search. You might find
a Harrier or Northern Goshawk. Both have been seen here within the past =
week.
While roaming Saturday evening the area I saw an American Woodcock and a
red-phase Eastern Screech-owl.
Horned Larks are everywhere; onesies, twosies and flocksies...

Observed a Short-eared Owl last night (12/3)
on 70th Av SW between 20th St and Salem Rd.
This is same location where Short-eared Owl(s)
overwintered last year and where they have
been traditionally found.
Bird was flushed from the road at 6:08PM.
This morning I saw 3 Redpolls high in the trees
behind Kelly's Orchard at 65th St NW and 34th Av.
There has been a Northern Shrike hanging around this
area for the past month or so. Another traditional spot.

Hi All,

Whatever your own personal views are
on the laws of man or the laws of nature
or the circle of life and how everything that
dies will provide the means for those that
live on to survive, they're your views.
Personal responsibility is, well, personal.
We all need to face the mirror at some point.

I personally agree with Forest;
it's the end of the year,
our feathers are worn.
It's time to molt and grow anew.

I just gotta chime in on this.

I'm really glad this bird wasn't reported.
In 1998 while on my last real vacation I was lucky enough to see a pair =
of
Whooping Cranes in Yellowstone National Park out in the middle of a =
marsh.
The birds were nearly 1/2 mile from the nearest road but were easily =
visible
from the road, that's how we saw them.
Being in complete shock (a happy shock) one moment my emotions changed =
to
outrage a second later when some unseen IDIOT who had also spied the =
birds
snuck up for a better look, got too close to them and flushed the birds.
They called and flew away.
The rangers at the park were sympathetic when I told them about the =
incident
but as they told me then, it's a public park and people can (and do) go =
pretty much anywhere
they want to. =20
Doubtlessly someone may have done the same with number 1 and spooked her
had her presence been made public.
Carlos Avery IS a public place.
The temptation to get a better look is strong.
The closer to extinction a creature is the stronger the temptation.

Let's all work together and some day there will be more Whoopers!!!
