[mou-net] Pelican Dakota cty at Black Dog

2014-01-12 Thread Diane Gulbrandson
The injured pelican is still on the east end of Black Dog Road. Does anyone
know of someone who can rescue the bird? It was on the shore when I
saw it. I'm surprised it lasted past the Polar Vortex.

[mou-net] Black Dog road; Dakota Cty

2012-11-25 Thread Diane Gulbrandson
Black Dog road is open again, but there is a sign at each end warning
that it's a minimal maintenance road and to travel at your own risk.
The holes are patched with loose rock so it is passable. I'm assuming
when it snows it may not be a good road for travel. I counted 6 bald
eagles when I drove the road yesterday late in the afternoon.

[mou-net] Henn Cty Hyland Lake Park

2012-05-08 Thread Diane Gulbrandson
There are 2 Trumpeter Swans at the pond where the osprey nest is
located, which is across from the Bush Lake Park parking lot. I saw
them Sunday afternoon and Tuesday afternoon.

While watching the opsrey and swans, a flock of about 100 of what
looked like pelicans flew in the north towards the west.

[mou-net] Osprey nests in Ramsey and Dakota

2012-03-26 Thread Diane Gulbrandson
On Sunday I saw an osprey on the pole nest on Randolph which is off
Shepard Road. It wasn't the resident male from last year.

Also, the osprey nest on the tower in Black Dog Lake at the Black Dog
power plant is hosting a pair of nesting Bald Eagles. They've been
incubating for quite a few weeks now so the chicks should hatch soon.
The nest can be seen from the road.

The Twin Cities Osprey Project which is part of 3 Rivers park would
appreciate reports of any sightings of osprey. Please report any
sighting of an osprey (including when and where it was seen and what
it appeared to be doing such as carrying nesting material, flying,
perching, etc) to Judy Voigt Englund at

[mou-net] Osprey

2011-04-06 Thread Diane Gulbrandson
Osprey are slowly returning. The returning pair is back at the Mississippi
Island station and have gotten down to work of mating. I saw an osprey at
the Hyland Lake nest. The Twin Cities Osprey Project would appreciate a
report of any sightings of osprey. Please report any sightings osprey,
including when and where it was seen and what it appeared to be doing
(carrying nesting material, flying, perching, etc). The email for reports is
jvengl...@threeriversparkdistrict.org.

Also, in the Star Tribune today there is an article about the nest that was on
a light pole on 169/62 freeway light. Any reports about osprey seen in the
extended area would be appreciated. It's speculated they may find a cell
phone tower or another tall man made structure to nest on. Please email any
reports to 3 Rivers Park. There is a pole down the road on 169 near Valley
View Road which hosts an established pair.

Re: [mou-net] Wells Fargo peregrines

2010-03-28 Thread Diane Gulbrandson
I apologize. I should have included the location. It's a nest tray on the
east side of the Wells Fargo building which is the old Norwest Bank. The
tray is under the carousel floor on the top of the building next to the
shorter bank building. Look for a cam pointing to the nest like an arrow.
The building is on American Boulevard between Penn Avenue and France Avenue
off of I494 in Bloomington. There is a parking lot which is signed for bank
parking only but I think quick birding should be ok. Viewing and
photography is best early in the day before the sun goes to the west side
and casts shadows.

[mou-net] Purgatory Creek Snowy Egret

pm on Friday.

I also saw what I think was a domestic chicken or a rooster at the MVNWR
observation area parking lot on Thursday afternoon. I have photos if anyone
is interested.

I went back to Purgatory Creek on Saturday between 2 and 3. As I walked to
the foot bridge, I must have startled the Snowy Egret who was just below the
bridge (it startled me too). I spotted the yellow feet as it flew to the
island in
front of the bridge.

[mou] Tagging of Trumpeter Swans

2008-01-26 Thread Diane Gulbrandson
I went to Monticello 2 weeks ago to see the swans by the power plant. I
picked up a flyer. In response to the question of the tagging of Trumpeter
Swans, the following is quoted from the flyer...Minnesota swans are tagged
on the wing. Left wing tag indicates females, right wing tag is male. Iowa
swans have neck collars (white, red or green). The flyer didn't say what
color Minnesota tags are.

Can anyone explain why some Trumpeters have red plumage on their heads and
necks? I took a photo of a swan who had red on the top of its head, down
the neck and continued down its underside.
