[mou-net] memorial for Steve Blanich

2017-09-08 Thread Ken & Pam Perry
MOU friends,
We (me, Ken, Butch Ukura, Judd Brink and Jo) are planning to do a memorial
project for Steve Blanich through the MOU Savaloja Grants by sponsoring a
mentoring/education project. Fundraising will occur this fall and then we will
choose a project to sponsor this winter when the proposals are received for the
grants. Steve and Jo mentored so many birders, including Terry Savaloja, that
we felt this would be an appropriate memorial.

If you want to participate, send a check to “MOU Treasurer, Mark Lystig, 1741
Sartell Ave., Eagan, MN 55122”. Make the check out to “MOU - Savaloja Grants”
and put in the memo line “Steve Blanich Memorial". The MOU is a 501(c)(3)
organization so donations are tax-deductible. Steve Wilson and Mary Shedd have
offered to match all these donations to the Savaloja Fund.

[mou-net] Snowy Owl ~ Crow Wing County

2015-03-02 Thread Ken & Pam Perry
Ken and I received 3 reports last night of a Snowy Owl around the
intersection of hwy. 371 north and Woida Rd. in Baxter. This is a very busy
intersection with a SuperAmerica on one corner and Mills Ford across the 4
lane hwy. At about 7:30 AM this morning, we located the owl on a powerpole
at the intersection of Clearwater Road and Golf Course Drive, just south and
east of the Office Max. We watched it leave that perch and fly across the
field to the northwest, and then we lost it as it went into the area between
the Target store and Bodyworks. At about 7:37 AM we relocated the snowy
perched on the northeast corner of the Target store. The owl was also
observed by John Richardson and Judd Brink.

[mou] Park Point--from the MOU Conservation Committee

2008-09-21 Thread Ken & Pam Perry
Many of you are aware that the Duluth City Council has proposed selling Park
Point land to raise money for the City. Park Point is a significantly
important area for birds. More information about this issue can be found in
the article at this link--

http://72.14.205.104/
 search?q=cache:ZuQi-ghMeU0J:www.duluthnewstribune.com/a

The Park Point land needs to stay in public ownership and not be developed.
This is an important conservation issue for birds. Comments to the mayor or
letters to the Duluth News Tribune would be helpful at this time. The
Duluth mayor's e-mail address is dness at duluthmn.gov

[mou] Northern Mockingbird, Aitkin County

2008-07-03 Thread Ken & Pam Perry
This morning my husband Ken and I found a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD in SW Aitkin
County. The location was 2 miles north of the Aitkin County line on Hwy.
169 north of Garrison. It was on Conifer St. (aka Aitkin County 37) which
is a frontage road for Hwy. 169, on the east side, just south of the
junction of Conifer St. and 442nd Place. This is between Myr Mar Villas (on
the north) and the public access to Mille Lacs Lake (on the south). The
mockingbird was first seen along the road (Conifer St.) on the ground and
then it flew into the mass of ripening elderberries that were thick right
along the eastern side of the road.

We also found a colony of Bank Swallows further north by Ripple Lake. If
anyone is interested in seeing these birds, I can send you directions to the
site.

In Crow Wing County, Common Terns and Bonaparte's Gulls were easily observed
at Garrison at the lookout area by the big walleye (at the intersection of
Hwy. 18 and 169).

[mou] Donations for Whooping Cranes--Remembering the Class of 2006

As Chair of the MOU Conservation Committee, I am sending this e-mail to you
through the Minnesota birding list serves to encourage a donation on behalf
of the recent Whooping Crane loss in Florida. There are two organizations
that can accept donations (501c3) and that are working directly on the
re-establishment of Whooping Cranes. These are Operation Migration
(www.operationmigration.org) and the International Crane Foundation
(www.savingcranes.org). I also spoke with Neil Feeken at the National Fish
and Wildlife Foundation office in the Twin Cities and he told me that his
organization will match these donations (dollar for dollar) up to $50,000.

If you want to make a donation to help Whooping Cranes, I suggest that you
check out the web sites that I have listed above. Both sites have
instructions on how to make a donation and you can state the reason for the
donation. Perhaps you have a little extra cash coming back in an income tax
refund. Or, perhaps you just want to let these organizations that are
devoted to cranes know that the folks in Minnesota felt the loss when we
heard the terrible news after the Florida tornado.
