Re: [mou-net] Threats against birders in Sax-Zim Bog

2012-01-03 Thread Peter Dullea
I agree with Mr. Hawkins. Placating this fellow will not
make him go away, and sooner or later, he will hurt some unsuspecting
passer-by, or himself. This man's actions are dangerous and often illegal.
The remedy is to report every single incident to the law enforcement, and to
follow up by pressing charges where appropriate. A restraining order might be
effective too, but I'm not familiar with applicable state law. It
might be worthwhile to contact the man's family, but I suspect that he's long
since broken ties with any family members. Contacting the Veteran's
Administration might be fruitful, too, but only if he decides to cooperate with
them. This man's activities ought not to be tolerated. It's not fair to
the community at large, and it's especially not fair to the inevitable innocent
person he hurts someday.Responsibility lies with law enforcement, but they need
the community's help in reporting, in prosecuting, and, if necessary, in
testifying in court. Simply avoiding public roads near this man's home gives
him carte blanche to continue his reign of terror.

[mou-net] Pileated Woodpecker in Marcell

2011-08-21 Thread Peter Dullea

Good morning! I saw a Pileated Woodpecker this morning at the Edge of
the Wilderness Discovery Center in Marcell, right on State Highway 38. The
bird crossed and re-crossed the highway several times, screaming the whole
time. This is a big, active bird, and at one point I could see the red cockade
with the naked eyeball. This is a life bird for me.

[mou-net] Marcell Osprey Chick

2011-06-16 Thread Peter Dullea
Today I visited the Osprey nest off Itasca County Road 45 that I've been
watching for over a month. I've been seeing the top of a little head for a
week or two, but today I saw the whole chick for the first time. The chick
stood on the edge of the nest while one of the parents fed it a little, then
flew off. I thought the chick might take flight, but after a few tentative
flaps it settled down into the nest.

Both parents have been very attentive. There is usually one on the
nest, and there is always one adult standing guard in a dead tree about 40
yards from the nest platform. I'll keep visiting-- I hope to have a chance to
see the chick fly, which should be very soon. I'll keep you posted.

Peter

P.S. -- A few days ago I placed a bird feeder filled with sunflower seeds
outside the Discovery Center in Marcell, where I am a volunteer. The feeder
was represented to be squirrel-proof. That may be true, but I can attest that
that particular feeder is not bear-proof.

[mou-net] Osprey v. Eagle

2011-05-17 Thread Peter Dullea

For about the last 10 days I've been keeping an eye on a nest being
tended by a pair of Osprey
on County Road 45 near Marcell in Itasca County. Today I visited the spot
about 1:00 PM with my 'scope
to see if I could tell whether any eggs had hatched. They hadn't, but i
watched as a passing adult Bald Eagle
showed an interest in the nest. Both adult Ospreys took off after the eagle,
and after a spirited aerial dogfight,
the eagle flew away.

I also saw a Pine Marten crossing Highway 38 a mile or so north of
Marcell.

Re: [mou-net] Stickney Road Warning

2011-02-13 Thread Peter Dullea
Mr. Hendrickson is right. These incidents should be reported. I was a
deputy public defender here in California for 31 years, but I now spend my
summers im Itasca County, MN. These people usually hurt someone eventually.
If he says he's going to shhot you, or kill you, believe him. Get away and
notify law enforcement. If he made a specific threat or if he hurt or tried to
do so, then file a complaint, request prosecution and be prepared to go to
court if necessary.

I'm not familiar with Minnesota law, but in California, threatening
people can be treated as a felony. Pulling a gun on someone is illegal in all
states.

This guy needs to be stopped. Sure, helped, but in a secure facility.
He will hurt or kill someone. Please, report all these incidents. You will
be saving someone from serious harm.

   Good birding,

[mou-net] Black Tern Breeding Colony

2010-07-20 Thread Peter Dullea

There is a breeding colony of Black Terns in Itasca County near Marcell,
in a water-lily-choked channel between Mike's Lake and Copenhagen Lake. These
lakes are reachable only by canoe or other shallow-draft boat boat from
Clubhouse Lake. I stumbled across 'em a month or so ago, but have been staying
away since because of the obvious distress our presence caused the birds. I
later learned that the terns nest there every year. I saw several eggs in very
exposed nests on lily pads. Black Terns can be seen foraging every night on
Clubhouse Lake and a number of other nearby lakes.

I've only been in Minnesota for a few months, and I'm not sure where the
Black Tern mentioned in other posts was found, and I don't know whether it's
unusual there.
