As I recall the thinking was that owls were attacking the birds at =
night, but I don't know of feeder birds that would eat at a bird feeder =
at night. Although it is possible for owls to eat other birds, I have a =
photo of a great-horned with a robin and a photo of an eastern screech =
owl with a blue jay it's unusual for owls to go after songbirds since =
they are kind of the Sunday drivers of the raptor world. =20

Just out of curiosity, are there bones in the pellets? =20

Went to Pipestone on Saturday to see if the reported Towsend's Solitaire was
still hanging out. No sight of it, but 8 robins were there, lots of Field
and Tree sparrows, and every imaginable shade of Junco. At Current Lake, in
north west Murray County the aerators have opened a nice large patch of
water near the road along the north side. Lots of Canada geese and Mallards
but also a pair of Hooded Mergansers, a small group of Shovelers and Common
Goldeneye.

Redpolls were being seen in Murray County last week-end. A friend had four
or five of them at his feeders. He also has 10 tree sparrows that come
regularly to his ground feeder.
On Monday near Current Lake in the north part of the county, there was a
Rough Legged Hawk in a cottonwood there. He was patient enough for me to
scramble out of my car and dive into the back to find my binoculars.

With the snowfall this morning came dozens of lapland longspurs to the
roadside in Murray and Lyon Counties. Besides avoiding skidding vehicles I
had to slow for them, too. Over the week-end a pair of Greater Yellowlegs
fed in the shallows of Lake Wilson in western Murray County. Harris sparrows
still thick around my low platform feeder in Lake Wilson as well.

[mou] Sparrows in Murray County

2003-10-09 Thread Timmerman, Janet
We have been seeing many Harris and White-throated Sparrows in the yard this
week and Red-tails, Swainsons, and Harriers in the fields hunting.
Seems to be a good crop of Franklin gulls this year following the tractors
again. Lovely golden autumn. Camden State Park was quiet with birds last
night but bright with maples.
