2008-03-18 Thread Curt Rawn
Today from 12:30 to 2:30 pm, I did not find the Townsend's Solitaire at the
Science Museum's big back yard. A staff member said the bird was seen 3 days
ago by a party with a bird call device.

I saw from a distance what might have been an American Kestrel.

2008-01-02 Thread Pastor Al Schirmacher
The MIA Townsend's Solitaire reemerged over lunch hour today at Ann
Lake/Sand Dunes, after not being seen for a month.

Directions: take Sherburne CR 5 to 253rd (across the highway from CR 4),
proceed west on 253rd little over a mile. Park in the small lot on the
south (right) side, walk south on the snowmobile/dog sled (no kidding) trail
about 50 yards, look and or walk west (right) on the snowy fields to the
second copse of spruces. It was seen both on the top of the deciduous trees
and in the spruces.

The mixed Bohemian/Cedar flock, when present (single Bohemian today), can
often be seen in the deciduous trees just north of the spruces.

Behavioral note: have observed both Robins and Waxwings dipping on the
bird this winter - wonder why it would be considered a threat?

Good birding to all!

[mou] Townsend's Solitaire in Olmsted County

2007-11-17 Thread Bob Ekblad
I located a Townsend's Solitaire about 1pm this afternoon in northern
Olmsted County just east and a bit south of the town of Oronoco. This was a
new county species for me. I have been looking for one in the county for
several years - ever since Jerry Bonkoski found one a long time ago. This
year there have been more reports of the species in the state than I recall
ever in the past so I made a point to search the right habitat in the county
for the species. Persistence paid off and I finally found one after several
days of searching.

To get to the location, exit off of Highway 52 at one of the two new bridges
and head to the center of the town (Cty 18 is the main street through town)
where there is a bridge with the dam under it. Just north of the bridge is
a county route 118 that heads east. Take that and then take the first right
on 2nd. After a short block it will force you back east toward the Oronoco
Auto Recyclers. Go to the recycler place and then continue past their
entrance for 1.8 miles. The road first follows the river and then goes
across an open area and then drops back down into woods, heads south and
eventually comes to a good sized stand of cedars that have a westerly
exposure. The solitaire was perching in the taller deciduous trees in with
the cedars or in the trees across the road where it is more open. It would
also call fairly often. There is a small white sign on the east side of the
road with the words Parcel A on it that was about as far south as the bird
would go. Several local birders were able to see the bird. It was still
there after 2pm.

This afternoon Kim Eckert and I found a Townsend's Solitaire along
Scenic Highway 61 in Knife River. It was on the north side of the

A Nelson's Sharp-tailed Sparrow and a Le Conte's Sparrow were seen at
the new McQuade Road public access, near the resort on the north side
of Scenic 61. Another Le Conte's Sparrow was seen at the solitaire
location.

A Black-backed Woodpecker flew by the west end of Stoney Point, and
three groups of migrating Sandhill Cranes were seen between Stoney
Point and Larsmont, totaling 29 individuals. We saw six warbler
species, including a late Yellow Warbler at Knife River.

Arrived at Afton SP office about 12;30 PM. Ran into John Quinn on the path

Townsend's Solitaire 30 minutes earlier. Our chances seemed good for locating
our target bird! Of course, by the time we hiked in, another 20-25 minutes had
elapsed. We found the two cardinals that he had seen but never found the
Eastern Bluebirds or the TS. We stayed until 2:45, listening and searching in
the spots where the bird has been spotted, but came up empty. At least it was
an amazingly warm day and fun to be out hiking.

[mou] Townsend's Solitaire-Afton S.P.

2007-01-01 Thread Diana Doyle
Today while hiking Afton State Park to count for the Afton CBC, Susan
Plankis and I saw a Townsend's solitaire.

Two hikers first spotted a bird they were unfamiliar with, perched
very close to the trail. We heard its warbling song and as we
approached identified it as a townsend's solitaire.

We watched it for over 15 minutes, relocating it a second time, and
watched it from as close as 25 feet as it sang and ate cedar and
buckthorn berries. With the beautiful fresh snow cover and clear blue
skies it was quite a New Year's Day event for us!

Unfortunately the trails in Afton SP are not named nor marked with
numbers to easily describe the location. North of the backpack
camping area are two shelters about 0.7 miles apart. To the west of
the easternmost shelter is a 0.2 mile trail bend. The bird was along
the N-S stretch of this bend, where pine and cedar trees line the
west side of the trail.

Watched and listened to a nicely marked Townsend's at Afton State Park this
morning about 11:30. The bird was singing and feasting on cedar berries.
Location: pine and cedar plantation rows 1/4 mile west of the trail shelter
on the north end of the park. Follow the trail from the shelter west
through the prairie section to the row of pines. There are often
red-breasted nuthatches here; they were present today also.

This bird will make it onto another birder's Christmas Count list as some
other birders came along behind us while the bird was still present and
singing.

Happy Birding,
Michelle Piotrowski

[mou] Townsend's Solitaire, Cook County (Croftville Rd)

2006-10-28 Thread Dedrick Benz
Saturday.

A couple of groups have found a Townsend's Solitaire this afternoon along
the Croftville Rd, which is a couple miles upshore from Grand Marais. It
was seen at mile markers 1460, and 1479. I understand the Knife River
solitaire was seen again today, as well as several at Stony Point near
Duluth.

The Scoter scene has been slim in Cook County, but there is one White-winged
Scoter that has been in the Grand Marais Inner Harbor (ie, by the fish
shacks) for several days.

[mou] Townsend's Solitaire; Reporting Question

2005-03-28 Thread Pastor Al
Relocated the Townsend's Solitaire along Ann Lake Campground Road over lunch
hour today after a one month absence. It's loud, repeated single note
call drew my initial attention.

Noted that Y2004 had no spring records, so documented it on the on-line
seasonal report form. Should it have been on a trip form instead (new to
this system)?

Also had first of year Eastern Meadowlark Bluebirds in the Sherburne

[mou] Townsend's Solitaire, Ann Lake

2005-02-04 Thread Pastor Al
The Townsend's Solitaire was present this morning along the road to Ann Lake
Campground in Sherburne County (only the second time over the last month
I've seen it). It was singing and - if you'll pardon the anthropomorphism -
cavorting in the sun warmth.

This part of Ann Lake is accessible from Sherburne CR 5. Take 169 to
Sherburne CR 9, proceed west on 9 through the refuge to CR 5, take CR 5
south about five miles to the campground road (CR 4 will be in front of you,
only goes to west there). The Solitaire was at the one mile mark, park in
the right lot (holds about three cars) and walk in the right hand trail
for a couple of minutes. It tends to perch in the highest bare trees.

If not present there, it is also often found by walking in another half mile
past the gate (closed only to vehicular traffic), perched in the bare trees
on the left hand side. It has been found elsewhere up and down the 1.5 mile
stretch of road - and sings/calls only irregularly.

Also had an early Belted Kingfisher (Sherburne CR 1  87, open water area);
was surprised to see Canadas overhead (has been 6-7 weeks since I've seen
them this far north).

Good birding to all!

Refound the Townsend's Solitaire posted by Keith Pulles on Sunday. It was

Thanks for the post, Keith - state bird for this new Minnesotan!

[mou] Townsend's Solitaire, Sherburne County

2004-11-14 Thread tpulles
After church this morning my family and I went to Sherburne
NWR with hopes of pine siskins. The refuge drive was closed
because of hunting, so we drove along some other nearby
promising-looking roads instead. As we pulled into the Lake
Ann Campground road, I noticed a bird sitting on a wire. At
first, I assumed it was a female house finch, but something
wasn't quite right about it. Then I saw the white eye ring
and my heart rate starting increasing. I got my scope on
it, and sure enough, it was a Townsend's solitaire (other
good field marks included the intricate wing pattern, white
outer tail feathers, and longer tail length - I got a photo
of it.) It flew around in the same general vicinity before
flying a little ways off the road into the pine forests.
The time was about 12:00 noon.

DIRECTIONS-
From Big Lake, go north on Sherburne County Rd 5. Follow
this until you reach 253rd Avenue, also known as Lake Ann
Campground Road (I believe there is a sign for this). Turn
right on this road. The bird was about a block or so in
sitting on the telephone wire on the north side of the road.
I last saw it fly off further in that same direction.

Other good birds included red-breasted nuthatch and
Bonaparte's gull

Today (Saturday, February 21, 2004) at 1:36 p.m. I found a Townsend's
Solitaire in Pipestone County just northwest of Pipestone, MN. The bird was
observed for approximately 20 minutes on both sides of County Road 67
northwest of Pipestone National Monument.

Directions:

Coming into Pipestone from the northeast on Highway 23 where it intersects
Highway 75, turn West/right on 2nd St NE (note; the street sign is faded -
on the opposite side of where you turn off of Highways 23/75 to 2nd St NE
is the grain elevator/grain bins). Follow 2nd St. NE/NW west for one mile
to NW 8th Avenue. Turn North/right on NW 8th Avenue. When NW 8th Avenue
curves west turn North/right on County Road 67/68th Avenue and follow Co.Rd
67/68th Avenue north for 8 tenths of a mile. On your right/east side is the
western boundary of the Pipestone National Monument followed by a Wildlife
Mgmt area/State Game Refuge. On your left/west side is a large cemetery.
Continue north past the cemetery where the road becomes gravel. The bird
was observed perched on fence posts, small trees and in the road ditches on
both sides of the road in the area of the Wildlife Mgmt area small parking
lot on the east side and the large black dirt mounds on the west side of the
road.

The bird was not with any other birds.

[mou] Townsend's Solitaire

2004-01-17 Thread Dave Bartkey
Hi everyone!
I spent the day birding Houston and Fillmore counties with John Hockema and
Chuck Juhnke (my fellow SEMOCAN brethren) and had good
birding and great fun!

Just south of the Lanesboro Fish Hatchery, we found a Townsend's Solitaire!
Also in this area were a few Robins, a Northern
Flicker and lots of Cedar Waxwings. The place was hopping! To get to this area,
follow the dirt road, south, out of the fish
hatchery. The road will fork, but follow it to the right. Then you will come to
a 4-way intersection. Go straight, and just about
100 yards past will be cedar trees on both sides of the road and an open creek
on the right. This is where the bird was. We had some
great, long looks at the bird and were also able to see it's buff-colored wing
patches as it flew overhead.

We explored Houston county for a few hours also, and toward the end of the
afternoon, when the sun had been out for awhile warming
things up, we saw our first of two Golden Eagles. The first one we saw was in
northern Houston county, almost to the Winona county
line, north of the town of Houston. I don't remember the name of the road.
(Sorry) The second was in southern Winona county, pretty
much straight north of where we saw the first, but a few miles north. I would
suggest driving around this area and just scan over
hilltops for raptors, as John said the whole area is good for Goldens.

Other highlights today included several Pileated Woodpeckers, one Red-headed
Woodpecker, a couple of Kestrels, a dark morph
Rough-legged Hawk, and lots of Purple Finches. The hawk and finches were at
Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center.

Capping off the day was looking through John's spotting scope at Silver Lake
Park in Rochester at Saturn. We were even able to
make out the rings! John and Chuck may have seen better views of the planet as
they were setting up Chuck's scope as I left for
home.

It was truly one of the funnest times I've ever had birding and I want to
thank John (The Wren) and Chuck (The Thieving Magpie)
for a great day full of birds and even more laughs! I hope all my info was
correct you guys!

Good birding!
