I have posted a new video on youtube.com of the Yellow-rumped Warbler that
has been at my feeders since Nov. 29th. I've also had a White-throated
Sparrow overwinter.

The warbler is an amazing little bird that survived 3 nights of 30+ below
temperatures and a couple weeks of 20 below temps, those temps don't factor
in the wind chill which was horrendous at the time. Crane Lake is in the
very far north of St Louis County and is located only 4 miles from Canada.

You may have to copy and paste the link into your address bar.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=YNTpJAC15TU

If that doesn't work, you can search for the video: Yellow-rumped Warbler &
White-throated Sparrow.

For a video that I took Feb 3rd, go to the "More from this User" tab just to
the right of the video. Scroll down to Yellow-rumped Warbler. It is very
interesting to note the plumage - his breeding plumage is starting to come
in. I hope to get more pictures of him as he changes. I am curious to know
if the bird is a male or female, any advice?

The yellow on the very top of the head is just starting to appear - do both
male and female have the yellow patch?

It has been a fun winter! (I apologize for the poor quality of the video -
bad lighting)

p.s. early yesterday morning, Monday, I heard a calling Saw-whet Owl.

[mou] Yellow-rumped Warbler Duluth

There is symbolic as well as actual beauty in the migration of birds.
There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of
nature--the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after the
winter.

[mou] Yellow-rumped Warbler in Duluth

2006-01-30 Thread Kim R Eckert
Today there was a Yellow-rumped Warbler along Skyline Parkway in
Duluth. The bird was along Skyline about 100 yards E of the entrance to
Chester Bowl associating with a small flock of siskins and chickadees.
I had actually first heard its call note here last Friday, Jan 27, as I
was running by, but I assumed it was just an odd call coming from one
of the siskins in the flock and kept going. So when I heard it again
today at the same place, I stopped and pished until it came into view
to reveal it was indeed a Yellow-rumped.

This probably represents an overwintering bird which just had not been
noticed by anyone earlier this season, rather than an unusually early
"spring" migrant. Despite the record-high temperatures lately, I am not
aware of anyone reporting any other birds showing up in Minnesota
earlier than normal, and, if it were a migrant, this would be over 2
months early and very unlikely.

[mou] yellow-rumped warbler, nesting pileated

This probably is old hat to Duluthians, but this morning there were two
Yellow-rumped Warblers singing in my yard before i left for work. My birding
has been relegated to backyard stuff recently, and so this is the first warbler
species that i've seen this season. One nice gift at home is an active
Pileated nest cavity within view from the house. I think they are sitting on
eggs (when one adult arrives at the tree, another pops out of the hole and
flies off). Also a N. Saw-whet owl has been calling. Don't know if he's
nesting or just passing through?
Howard.
