[mou-net] Cinnamon Teal at Silver Creek Reservoir - Olmsted County
This afternoon, Lance Vrieze located a Cinnamon Teal at the south-east corner of the Silver Creek Reservoir east of Rochester. The bird was staying closely associated with three Blue-wing Teal as they picked up and flew to several different locations on the reservoir, mostly along the southern side of the reservoir along Silver Creek Road (east of CR11). Each time birders were able to finally relocate the group of 4 only to have them pick up and move again (sometimes because of eagles overhead but most often they decided to move on their own). Diane and I were able to re-find the Cinnamon Teal the last time around 5pm in the north bay of the reservoir that is accessed via a stub road off of CR11. At that time there were additional Blue-wing Teal that had joined the group (along with several Green-wing Teal as well). This was very close to the same location where the Ruff was viewed last spring. We could see no evidence at all of any hybridization with other species. In fact, we were close enough to be able to view the red eye of the Cinnamon Teal (Blue-wing Teal have dark eyes). There was a lot of activity with birds of other species arriving and leaving the reservoir today so there is no guarantee the Cinnamon Teal will still be there in the morning, but there is at least a reasonable chance that it might be around. By the way, the reservoir is still mostly all ice covered except for open water at the in-flow locations on the north and south-east as well as around the perimeter of the reservoir. Access to the reservoir from Rochester is via CR2 and CR11 from the north or CR9 and CR11 from the south. [mou-net] Cinnamon Teal - Crow Wing County
This morning at 10:50AM I observed and photographed a probable Cinnamon Teal - The bird was in the flooded fields on the east side of CR 21 about 5 miles south of Business 371 south of Brainerd, MN. Photos at - http://blackwaterbirder.blogspot.com/ Conditions were not ideal and bird was observed for only 1 or 2 minutes in driving rain before it took flight to the ponds further east and south. It flew while I was checking the field guide and only saw it disappear over a berm while in flight. Dark rump and light colored bill had me checking the field guide - I believe the lightness of bill was glare, and dark rump appears to be normal for this species, which i have little experience with. [mou-net] Cinnamon Teal and shorebirds, Carver Co.
Hi all, The Cinnamon Teal was still in the drainage ditch along Salem Ave this afternoon at 5:00. There are quite a few flooded fields in the area, with a few ducks and a lot of shorebirds. Solitary Sandpiper and Snipe were in the flooded corn field near where the teal was hanging out. Further south on Salem Ave, a field on the east side of the road, just north of County Road 50, had at least 80 Greater Yellowlegs, 30 Lesser Yellowlegs, and 60 Pectoral Sandpipers. Another flooded area, on the south side of CR 50 just west of CR 41, had 40+ Pectoral Sandpipers. Both of these spots looked very promising for other shorebird species, but I was in a hurry and didn't have much time to scrutinize them. [mou-net] Cinnamon Teal still present!
Hi everyone, Thanks to an e-mail from Hap Huber yesterday, Forest Strnad and I took another crack at the Carver Co. Cinnamon Teal today and found the bird in the exact spot described by Hap, and in a previous post by Fr. Tom Margevicius from Monday. The spot described is on the north side of the farmhouse in a drainage ditch on the west side of the road. The ditch runs east/west. There is a single tree on the left side of the ditch and several Blue-winged Teal were lounging underneath, along with the male Cinnamon Teal. We viewed the bird for about 15 - 20 minutes, and were able to see it at rest, swimming, and briefly in flight. The bird would sit for a time, preening and then would swim and forage, not staying still for too long. A scope is a must. It was approximately 5:15 pm when we first saw the duck. Light wasn't great, but when the bird was moving and turning to and fro, one could make out the details in the sunshine. Thanks to Hap Huber, John Cyrus Fr. Tom! You guys were of huge help! Donn Mattsson and I saw the cinammon teal today (Monday) after a long time searching . At around 5:00 tonight we located him at the end of the small stream which flows along the left side of the first field to the north of the farmhouse. We had originally seen a few ducks back in there on land by the tree, but could not see enough of them to make an ID. Eventually the cinammon teal stepped out, was quite visible, swam for a bit in the water, then went back up on land.
