Very nice looks at a cooperative bird. Still present at 1:30 today. It was roosting on the small satellite dish on the side of the house number 24185. The homeowner came out and was very nice and ok with us parked on the shoulder by her house. -jerry pruett -- chance favors the prepared mind Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html

[mou-net] Clark's Nutcracker, more info (Winona Co.)
Yesterday I observed the Clark's Nutcracker in both yards: 24092 and 24185 County Road 9. I couldn't find anything on Google Maps that referred to this road as Cedar Valley Road, so if you're trying to figure out directions, just use County Road 9. Curt Rawn's instructions were excellent: "24092 [Bruce Little's house, which is now closed to the public] is on the south side of County Road 9, 1.5 miles from Highway 61." I waited in Bruce's yard starting shortly after 12:30pm. I didn't see it, although Bruce came out later and told me that he saw the bird in his yard that morning and that many other birders saw it on the powerline by 24185, which is about 1/8 mile further down (southwest) and on the other side of the road (the north side), as previously mentioned by Dedrick Benz. After Bruce directed me to the other house around 1:45pm, I immediately saw the nutcracker on a bird house. A woman came out of the house and told me that they had been seeing this bird for about three weeks as well, but didn't know what it was. She was pretty excited to learn what it was and how rare it was. Like Bruce, she was very kind and let me walk around her yard to get better views. The bird was very calm and was either perching or foraging. Larry Sirvio and Kevin Smith pulled up in the driveway around 2:00pm, at which point the bird flew to Bruce's yard. The woman let the birders park in her driveway, but we eventually headed back to Bruce's where we got more lovely looks. I left at 2:15pm and the nutracker was still there. I never got the woman's name, but she was kind and may let you park or walk around if you ask her, like she did for us. But be sure that you ask first. :) She doesn't have as much parking space as Bruce does, so that could become problematic, and as Dedrick said, there is no shoulder to pull off on the road. So long story short, if you're chasing the Clark's Nutracker, please be respectful of both properties. And please be safe on the road--it was fairly quiet in the middle of the day, but there were about 1-2 cars every five minutes, so it still gets used regularly. I want to thank the homeowners for their hospitality, Dedrick for sharing about the bird, and to Curt Rawn and Alan Stankevitz for giving good directions and keeping us updated on the bird. Thanks, and good birding! Alyssa DeRubeis Madison, WI Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html

[mou-net] Clark's Nutcracker, Winona County
There has been a Clark's Nutcracker visiting the home of retiree Bruce Little since about 9/7. The bird has become a little more sporadic as of late, but is seen most day. There is no feeder around but it likes to hang around the clothesline when it is around. Bill Drazkowski and I went this evening and missed the bird (it was seen around 6:30PM), but left him Bruce some peanuts to spread around. It sometimes flies to the north over Cedar Valley Rd. Bruce is friendly and welcomes visitors. 24092 Cedar Valley Rd (Cty Rd 9) which is about 10 miles downriver from WInona. Parking along Cedar Valley Rd. is impossible, but he has a large driveway that should be able to accommodate 6 cars or so. Please don't block his garage. At 2:30 the Clark's Nutcracker was still actively foraging on the N. side of CR 1 just at, and just west, of its intersection with St. Alban's St. At first it had been hunting insects in the grass right at the intersection to the east, across from the bus-stop on the corner. It then flew into the row of trees on the NW border of that intersection, reappearing in one of the conifers there. In a few minutes, it took position on a short post in the open grassy area, peering down and then diving for food. After a while it flew directly across that intersection, heading west right over our heads in the direction of St. Alban's. It landed on the telephone pole and resumed its peering and diving. At one point it had came within a few yards of us, seemingly unconcerned about our presence. It worked its way west along either side of the bike path there, once or twice taking up a perch on post or tree, but always returning to the ground to snatch up food with a dive and a hop. When we departed, the bird had been feeding within a few feet of someone getting photos, hunting directly in his shadow. During the half hour or so that we were there, a flock of @ 30 Red Crossbills flew over the same intersection, heading NE, possibly the same flock Bob Dunlap saw heading south earlier. That was the cherry on the sundae--- lifers, on top of a second and far superior look at a bird I'd seen only from a distance in Glacier Park. This was a much more impressive bird in size (and beak!) than I'd imagined. [mou-net] CLARK'S NUTCRACKER today in Duluth
While count interpreting migrating songbirds and raptors today at Hawk Ridge, I spotted a CLARK'S NUTCRACKER flying by. The bird was flying quite low over the tree tops, and was last seen heading northeast. It was really exciting to see! There was a non-stop stream of Red-tailed Hawks throughout much of today at Hawk Ridge. Earlier this morning, I saw a flock of 10 Pine Grosbeaks fly overhead. I'm off to the Twin Cities now, to join up for some birds and beers, and to attend the Focus on Diversity: Changing the face of American Birding conference that takes place tomorrow. [mou-net] Clark's Nutcracker- Hawk Ridge, Duluth
At 2:15 pm this afternoon, a Clark's Nutcracker was spotted flying over the Hawk Ridge main overlook heading northward, when it was seen by numerous observers. I posted a photo of this bird to MOU recently seen. There were were no additional sightings of this bird today, although Peder Svingen and Mike Hendrickson searched the area of Tischer and Maxwell Avenues without success. Although there are approximately 19 total records of this accidental species for Minnesota, it has only been seen twice previously in Minnesota since 1977: 14-24 October 2004 in Lake County and 13 September 1986 in Mower County. All Minnesota records are in the fall and early winter from 8 September to 24 December. Re: [mou-net] Clark's Nutcracker in Lac qui Parle.
Several birders looked for the nutcracker today without success. With the high winds yesterday we only know of 2 folks who looked for the bird then, without success, and they didn't do so till after noon. Today the area was covered off and on from 8 or so till around 2. There is an active well stocked group of feeders about 500 yards from the trees where the nutcracker was seen two days ago. The folks at that house report that they have never seen the nutcracker. They seem well enough versed in identification that the birder who talked to them feels they would take a very good look at anything other than their regulars. Among their many species were redpolls and Purple Finches. Elsewhere in the area were several thousand Canada Geese, a few Cackling Geese, and a good assortment of migrating ducks. Several Rough-legged Hawks were still in the area, along with many red-tails, and a migrating Peregrine Falcon. The Townsends Solitaire was still at the Hantho Beach WMA.
