[mou-net] Great Blue Heron is back
The Great Blue Heron that’s been trying to forage in our drought-and-contractor destroyed pond is back again. But it seems to be in distress or sick. I can’t imagine it’s finding anything to eat. Is it normal for Great Blues to still be in Dakota County at this time? Should I call a wild bird rescue agency? Thank you for any words of wisdom, Kathryn Rudd, Eagan Sent from my iPhone General information and guidelines for posting: https://moumn.org/listservice.html Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html During the pandemic, the MOU encourages you to stay safe, practice social distancing, and continue to bird responsibly.
[mou-net] Great blue heron rookery threatened by development in Rochester
Dear all, there is a large great blue heron rookery in the Rochester area that is being threatened by a developer. See this article today from our local newspaper. This restraining order is in place only for 20 days I believe. There is a Facebook group dedicated to trying to save this rookery (link is in the article and below). https://www.postbulletin.com/news/science-and-nature/6957921-Restraining-order-pauses-development-through-heron-nesting-site Facebook group link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/266561745128418 Thanks all for your help! [mou-net] Great Blue Heron - Theodore Worth Golf Course - Golden Valley
Today while at Courage Kenny (the new name for Courage Center) I spotted a Great Blue Heron in the creek. [mou-net] Great Blue Heron Rookery Update North Mississippi Regional Park
Forwarded message: Hello Volunteers and Supporters of the North Mississippi Regional Park, Firstly, we would like to express our gratitude to everyone for your support of our park and the rookery after the May 22nd tornado. Secondly, we apologize that it has taken awhile to contact many of you. We were out of power for almost a full week after the storm and have lost many trees and, as many of you already know, our heron rookery. Hopefully you have seen the news clips and newspaper articles about the rookery and heron chicks. I am happy to report to you that many of our adult birds have relocated down river to two islands near Marshal Terrace Park located on NE Marshal St. just off of Saint Anthony Parkway. There are two islands, one can be seen from the Marshal Terrace Park river stairway, and at least two newly built nests with herons sitting can be seen from this location. If you decide to go and view the Blue Herons new location please be advised that it is down some steep stairs that are incomplete at the bottom and appear to end straight into the river. Please be cautious and bring a friend with if possible. The chicks that were rescued and sent to the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center are doing well and growing strong. You can see updates of them on their website at www.wrcmn.org and see a video of the chicks at http://www.youtube.com/user/WRCMN#p/a/u/0/TgQhwLHxWgs. WRC staff plan on releasing the birds in Northeast Minneapolis and will tell us in advance when and where this is going to take place. We will keep you updated! We are looking into the possibility of Great Blue Heron nesting platforms being put on the island. So far it is just in investigation stage, but we will also keep you posted on this. More exciting news includes that our paths are being cleared of trees and debris!! Yesterday trucks came and started the process and are continuing their clean up today. We also had many volunteers from General Mills Nature Valley Snack Division and Wilderness Inquiry staff come and remove invasive plant species from our prairie and wooded areas. The park is getting quiet the face-lift!! Come and check it out! We will be hosting some of the Juneteenth celebration activities this Saturday and welcome you to come and join the fun. We hope to see you soon and will keep you updated. Thank you again for your support and remember to stop in and say hello. Re: [mou-net] Great Blue Heron rookery, Hennepin County
I posted some pictures of the herons and the rookery that I have taken over the past week and a half on my blog. http://ecobirder.blogspot.com Thanks, Jeff Fischer From: Curt Rawn cn...@comcast.net To: MOU-NET@LISTS.UMN.EDU Sent: Mon, March 28, 2011 10:45:32 PM Subject: [mou-net] Great Blue Heron rookery, Hennepin County I scoped the Great Blue Heron rookery North of the Camden Avenue bridge on the Mississippi at 2:30pm. About 3/4 of the nests are taken by at least one Heron. It occurs to me now that I should have counted them, and the number of nests. I was looking for an owl's nest in the midst of it. If one is there it was hunkered down low and I didn't see it. I did get to see mating, nest building, preening and much flying about. Some of this was in the company of an adult Bald Eagle which stayed to one side, without inhibiting their behavior This rookery can be reached via the nature center at 49th and Lyndale Avenue North, in Minneapolis. [mou-net] Great Blue Heron rookery, Hennepin county
I stopped by the North Mississippi Regional Park to look for Great Horned Owls nesting in the Great Blue Heron rookery. I saw none, though I was there for 1 1/2 hours. I did see 6 GBHE on 4 nests, and also saw mating behavior and one pair copulating. Here is a map link to the park. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=qsource=s_qhl=engeocode=q=north+mississippi+regional+parksll=44.966559,-93.295727sspn=0.029756,0.053644gl=uslayer=tie=UTF8hq=north+mississippi+regional+parkhnear=ll=45.072793,-93.290062spn=0.112742,0.214577z=12 The park is 8 miles downstream from the Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park, which also has a Heron rookery. Re: [mou-net] Great Blue Heron feeding
I've seen that behavior in the Great Blues before--up in Sherburne NWR. It was the middle of a very bright, sunny, summer day. I wasn't sure if it helped the bird see its prey, or the larger shadow deceived the prey as to the bird's shape and impending spear-action.
