Re: [mou-net] Limpkin (Wantonwan Co.)

2023-06-05 Thread Kimberly Emerson
The limpkin made an appearance shortly before 6am yesterday (6/4) after a
forty minute wait. It was concealed somewhere in the willows in the western
marsh out of view (44.008660, -94.396310) before getting up and landing in
a tree not far from us where it preened for a couple minutes. It then flew
to the eastern cattail marsh (44.008344, -94.392031) and landed out of
sight. Very early morning (5-6am) seems to be the best time to try for this
bird. My ebird checklist from yesterday:
https://ebird.org/checklist/S140515052

A few ebird reports have noted a few calls from the bird, but nothing like
the wailing of the Washington County bird. For the most part, it is staying
silent.

This is the potential third state record, as one was documented in
Rochester last August and is currently in review.

My best,

Kimberly Emerson

Chad Hines refound the bird this morning around 5:15 at this location:
44.007240,-94.394606. Chad, Ron Erpelding and I watched it until around
around 6:00 when it flew to here 44.008373,-94.393615

Also, present at this location was a Least Bittern. At one time the two
birds were hunting within a few feet of each other.

Great morning!

[mou-net] Limpkin (Wantonwan Co.)

2023-06-05 Thread Alyssa DeRubeis
On June 1, Rachel and Chad Hillesheim found Minnesota’s second state record of
Limpkin in the ponds at 320th and 330th Streets. Here are the original
coordinates: (44.008, -94.395). However, the bird seems to move around
a fair bit, so be sure to check eBird for the most recent updates:
https://ebird.org/alert/summary?sid=SN35607. Scroll down to Limpkin or search
for Limpkin by pressing Control and F buttons at the same time, then typing
“Limpkin.”

It was most recently seen about an hour ago. Either it’s fairly cooperative
with visuals or it’s not cooperative whatsoever. No one has heard it vocalize
to my knowledge.

Happy summer birding!
