[mou-net] Malardi Lake shorebirds

2013-07-20 Thread Robin LaFortune
I checked Malardi Lake today to see how far drawn down it is- there is very
little water left, with lots of mud flats. There were about 150-200 shorebirds
there today. Not much variation, as about 95% of the birds were either Least
Sandpipers or Pectorals, but there were a couple Yellowlegs, Semi-Palmated and
Spotted Sandpipers, and a Snipe. Hopefully there will be more variety as
shorebird migration progresses- the habitat looks good! Lots of turtles too!

This lake is near Montrose, which is in Wright Co.

[mou-net] Malardi Lake

2013-05-15 Thread Robin LaFortune
Visited Malardi Lake today, which is in drawdown, with plenty to see. Two
birders that were there before me told me that half the flock left after a raid
by 2 Peregrine falcons, but there were still a lot of birds. Besides the usual
yellowlegs and peeps, there was an American Avocet, 2 Hudsonian Godwits, a good
handful of Dunlins, 3 Willets, some dowitchers, semi-palmated plovers, and
Black Terns. Also a good mix of waterfowl, and lots of Harris's sparrows on
the road in-

I was able to bird at the Malardi Lake WMA, this afternoon and enjoyed all the
Shorebirds that Robin had posted plus a few more species of interest. I
appreciated Bart's initial postings on the draw down and Robin's update. For
those interested in checking the area out, the morning would be better than the
afternoon. As the area you view the birds from is on the East side of the
lake. The DNR web page has good directions to the site. Here are some of the
species I observed there this afternoon:

Semipalmated Plover - 8
American Avocet - 1
Greater Yellowlegs - 1
Willet - 3
Lesser Yellowlegs - 100 +
Hudsonian Godwit - 11
Least Sandpiper - 100 +
Pectoral Sandpiper - 1
Dunlin - 8
Short-billed Dowitcher - 23
Wilson's Phalarope - 50 +
Peregrine Falcon - 1
Gray-cheeked Thrush - 3
Swainson's Thrush - 2

[mou-net] Malardi Lake Shorebirds - Wright County

2013-05-14 Thread Bly, Bart (DNR)
The Area Wildlife Manager today reported that there is approximately half (80
acres or so) of our Malardi Lake (near Montrose) drawdown project that is
exposed mudflat, and that there were huge masses of shorebirds foraging out on
the mudflats. From the Wildlife Management Area parking lot, one can walk out
a path through the cattails to the edge of the mudflat without getting your
feet wet as well. Be safe, make sure you stay on WMA property unless you ask
other landowners for permission, and have a great time birding (I'd like to
know what people find as well!!).
