While ATVing with my son on the Alborn-Pengilly trail, at the first road
intersection just north of Meadowlands in St. louis County I saw an unusual
bird fly across the trail into the mowed fiield of grass to the west. I
stopped and dismounted immediatley to see what it was. After missing my
first opportunity to see it with my binoculars in the windbreak between two
of the fields, I walked to see if it had landed beyond the windbreak. I
found a Black Billed Magpie foraging in the fiield. I've never seen this
western bird in MN before. I know they appear around Sax Zim but It was
still a first for me.
