[mou-net] osprey and compost
Interesting observations regarding the Osprey and compost at Poplar Lake. Several of us have observed that behavior there also. I do not think it is the heat they are seeking, but they are using that material to pack between the sticks to make a more solid floor to their nest. Other Ospreys use wet material from the lake shore, clumps of mud and grass. Sometimes this rich material contains seeds that grow, creating quite a garden up there! How green of those Ospreys to use recycled nest material! Vanessa Greene Twin Cities Metro Osprey Watch osprey...@att.net ospreywatch.blogspot.com now on Facebook too! [mou-net] Osprey and compost
My son and I did the Crane Count this morning. Our site is Poplar Lake, near Sherwood Rd and CR J, Ramsey Co. There's an osprey platform near there. We observed an osprey fly over Sherwood and return to the platform with a big clump of compost, probably from the compost site on the east side of Sherwood. It made three such trips while we were there. And the mate at the platform would pack it down with its feet. The compost piles were steaming in the dawn air. I wonder if they've learned that there's heat in them there leaves.
