Following up on a report of Prothonotary Warblers along Elk River in
Sherburne County by Dan and Pam Guynn on the 2nd I went to Lions Park on
CR 5 north of Big Lake this morning. At the canoe access I heard one
calling briefly but did not see it. I went to a small access point on the
east side of CR 5 about a half mile south of Lions Park and heard one
calling there as well, but again I had no luck seeing it. After a visit
to the NWR I came back to the small access south of Lions Park and heard
the bird calling regularly in a fairly defined area. Soon after Herb
Dingmann joined me(shortly after 1PM) we were finally able to spot the
bird a short distance up river.
