[mou-net] Robins??

2019-09-10 Thread ericaforman79
It dawned on me the other day that I haven't noticed that many robins in the
last few weeks. There's a hill next to my house where they usually hang around.
I haven't seen them there for a while - probably since July. Anyone else
experiencing this? I haven't even heard them singing in a long time. I'm in
Hopkins. Maybe it's just my neighborhood...Erica Forman Hopkins, MN Sent from

2019-03-08 Thread Susan Tertell
There are a lot of hackberries and crabapples in my neighborhood, so the
robins have been hanging around all winter. I have a heated birdbath, and
the last couple of weeks it has just been flooded with robins - one time I
counted 19 in and near the birdbath, and more in nearby trees. The only
downside is that they poop in the birdbath a lot so it requires daily
cleaning - hard in the cold weather!

2017-01-09 Thread Bruce Fall
There is a huge winter robin roost at the Univ. of St. Thomas, St. Paul
(Ramsey Co.). Birds spend the night in a small grove of conifers at the
west end of the O’Shaughnessy Science Hall on the south side of Summit
Ave., about a block west of Cretin. Sunday evening (1/8), Susan and I
censused them as they streamed in to the roost, and totaled an
impressive 2,525 birds. I'm sure that we missed some, and we will try
another census soon. Robins arrived at the roost continuously from 4:30
to 5:05 p.m., most from the north and northwest (from Shadow Falls
ravine), and somewhat fewer from the south and southeast across the
parking lot. As we drove there, we saw small flocks on the Minneapolis
side flying across the river toward Summit and I think it's likely that
some are coming from miles away to reach this roost. Two winters ago
(2015-16) there was another big robin roost near Lake Hiawatha in
Minneapolis that I monitored, with a peak count of 1,450 birds, but that
roost apparently was not used last winter or this one.

I live in S. Minneapolis.  Early this morning, the cardinals were singing
nearby.  I looked at my watch, and then it occurred to me: During the warmer
months, I always know what time it is because robins are at it.  So, now I'm
wondering if it is too early for robins to be here.  At least here in the
city.  Maybe they show up outside the core and then filter in.  So, anyone
waking up to robin chirps at 3:30 or 4:00 am?

When I volunteered at the MOU Booth at the Fair on Saturday evening, there were
a couple of questions from the public about whether the robins had already
migrated since they seem pretty scarce lately. We assured people that they were
still around but that their feeding habits had perhaps made them harder to see.

Yesterday afternoon, my husband and I were walking across the Stone Arch Bridge

Mpls. end of the bridge. We have often encountered robins along the

[mou-net] Robins in Forest Lake, Washington Co.

2009-03-06 Thread Holly Peirson
Thursday AM there were quite a few Robins in the bushes next to the Forest
Lake High School parking lot. Small flock, perhaps 5-10. Ah, Spring!

Holly Peirson
Columbus, Anoka Co.

Have been feeding quite a nice mixed flock of siskins and goldfinches for
the last couple of months... 50 +/- birds a day descend upon the nyger
feeder. It doesn't LOOK like that many until I let the dog out and the rest
fly up from whatever tree branch they've been resting on!

[mou-net] Robins (Blue Earth, Nicollet Counties) also owls and magpies (Lake of Woods County)

2008-12-30 Thread premierpets
Greetings,
??? I was down in Mankato yesterday (Dec. 29) and at 4:48 till 5:03 I sat
along side north river drive where Hwy 169 and Hwy 14 meet and seen something I
have never witnessed in the dead of winter. I counted conservatively 1183
robins flying over my vehicle presumably heading for a roosting area.? I have
been seeing robins (flock of 3-8)?at my house (Nowthen, Anoka county)?nearly
everyday but it is to be expected as the berry crops are very healthy this
year. In the north metro I have seen mountain ash and crab apple that are full
of berries and have not been touched. In fact I had a couple bluebirds stay
until about 2 weeks ago.

I know this is a late post with the holidays I have been going non-stop, I was
in Beltrami and Lake of The Woods Counties on December 23.? I was able to
find?3 Magpies at?a farm in Waskish?and 42 snow buntings. I did not have much
time as the red lake walleye decided to bite only during the day. So I put in 3
hours of driving around in the blowing snow looking for birds.? While driving
up Hwy 72 I seen another Magpie (mm 52), 3 Northern Hawk Owls (mm 44,mm 53,mm
56), 2 northern shrike, more snow buntings, lots of redpolls, and what I
thought most interesting at mm 42 two Common Grackles looking for some open
water in the ditch on the east side of the road.? All in all I was happy with
what I was able to find but want to get up there again to spend a couple days
birding.

Have A Blessed New Year,
Good Birding To All,
Nowthen, (Anoka County)

Chris Brown
