[mou-net] Smith's Longspur in Duluth
Just got a second-hand report that the Smith’s Longspur I found yesterday morning at the McQuade Rd. public access is still present this morning. It was not reported to this listserv yesterday because I assumed it would migrate on and not be present for long, but it was seen by others later in the day, and perhaps it will still be there later today or into the weekend. The McQuade harbor/public access is located just outside the city limits about 5 miles up Scenic Hwy 61; look especially in the weedy grasses near the kiosk on the E side of the harbor. There were also a few Lapland Longspurs there yesterday, and I’m fairly certain there were actually two Smith’s - one more brightly plumaged than the other. [mou-net] Smith's Longspur in Duluth
First found Tuesday by Clinton Nienhaus and others in the grassy gravel flats at the old Stella Jones pier in west Duluth and still present today. Mixed in with Lapland Longspurs and Horned Larks and moving around a lot. Take Central Ave exit off I-35 and go S to Waseca Industrial Rd stop sign. Turn E here and then S as the road curves over RR tracks. Turn E on Lesure St at Grassy Point sign and go maybe 100 yards and turn right onto the flats of the vacant pier.
