Seen yesterday, 1/29, sharing air space with a few Bald Eagles over Sibley
Memorial Highway, just west of the 35 E bridge. It flew low over the road a
few times near Acacia Cemetery, close enough to show its dihedral wing
position and its red head.

2011-03-16 Thread Robert Dunlap
This afternoon I've noticed more Red-tailed Hawks flying north up the
Minnesota River Valley here at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter in
addition to all of the Bald Eagles the past few days, and just a few
minutes ago the first Turkey Vulture I've seen this year was with them.

Glad to see spring arrivals after this lng winter.

Turkey Vulture feeding on dead deer just outside Albert Lea.
I saw it right before the snow fell. At this time of basketball tournaments,
some might call that a buzzard beater or a blizzard beater. Not me.

[mou-net] Turkey Vulture migration Hennepin County

2015-10-02 Thread Madeleine Linck
As I was going out to retrieve a dead Trumpeter Swan that had hit a power
line in Maple Grove, Hennepin County, about an hour ago, I looked up to see
about 45 Turkey Vultures migrating SE. The birds were very high up,
probably riding thermals. Unfortunately the swan, this year's young, was
lying on the roadway's center strip, directly below power lines. Power line
collisions are a major source of mortality for swans.

Around 2:45 this afternoon I found a very late Turkey Vulture flying over
County Road C about a quarter mile east of Snelling. Perhaps it came up
with the warm south winds we’re currently experiencing. This is only the
third December record for the state.

At about 1:15pm, Kellie Hoyt and I, while censusing for the St. Paul

matched a Turkey Vulture, including gliding with wings in a dihedral and
two-toned wings. Happy to hear that someone else got better looks at this
late bird!

Just an observation...it seems to me anyway that the Turkey Vulture population
has been growing steadily over the last few years, especially in NE MN. I don't
have any specific evidence to confirm that, other than I seem to be seeing a
lot more than I used to. I wonder if any of you out there have noticed the same.
