[mou-net] Wood Duck on nest

2021-04-26 Thread Steve Weston
I usually avoid my backyard this time of year as much as possible, as I
have 3 Wood Duck boxes there. But, late tonight I decided to fill my suet
feeder that hangs on the back of one of my boxes. I got up there and
figuring it was early for the ducks to already be on eggs, I knocked gently
and asked if anyone was home. Hearing nothing, I opened the door and looked
in. I noticed the feathers on the nest and was about to reach in to check
the number of eggs, when I realized that I was looking at a Wood Duck hen
on the nest. I calmly closed the door and finished with the suet. She never
moved. Another of the boxes has feathers caught on the hole indicating that
hens have been in there. I did not look at the other box.
