Toss out the hummingbird feeders you are presently using and buy the wide mouth, easy to take apart, easy to clean, cheap ($3.98) feeders at Walmart. I did and am very happy with them. Be sure the "dirt" isn't mold. Some molds are quite toxic to birds. Or you could use the old restaurant coffee pot cleaning method: put a little shaved or small pieces of ice in, along with some lemon juice, swirl it around a few times and then rinse with water. Works like a charm on cooked on coffee and other grime at the bottoms of jars. I wash my hummingbird feeders in the dishwasher. If they're too long for that, into the garbage they go. I prefer several small feeders scattered around to one big feeder anyway. But my mother-in-law uses a bigger feeder, and a long bottle brush to clean it.
