[mou] Geese
---1164069312 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Today I sorted through 1000's of Canada Geese in numerous locations in Sherburne and Mille Lacs counties. I could not find a single Cackling Goose in any of these groups. This is most interesting as we are trying to learn the migratory pattern of Cackling Geese in Minnesota. In previous weeks and in late October it was relatively easy to find Cackling Geese in many locations were there were large numbers of Canada Geese. Is this a possible indication that Cackling Geese are gone from the state by early to mid-November or was it just a local situation that I ran into today? Your thoughts, comments and observations on the migration of Cackling Geese would be most interesting. [mou] Tricolored Heron
An adult Tricolored Heron was seen at 4:00 PM, today, 5 June at the Black Rush Marsh in Lyon County. Black Rush Marsh is located east of Minnesota Highway 23 along Lyon County Road 59. Co. 59 is two miles north of Russell or approximately 9 miles south (from the junction with Highway 59) on 23 from Marshall. Take Co. 59 one mile to the east to an impassable Minimum Maintenance Road which runs south through the marsh. You can walk the road but not drive it. The heron was about 1/4 mile down this road. [mou] Arctic Tern - Garden Island - Lake of the Woods County
While conducting a bird survey on Garden Island, Lake of the Woods County on the morning of June 15, I observed a breeding plumaged Arctic Tern on the sand spit on the east end of the island. The bird allowed close approach and stayed in the area for at least two hours. The bird was not seen when we first landed on the island so probably just arrived when I first saw it. Also present were Franklin's, Ring-billed and Herring Gulls. Garden Island is a State Recreation Area, part of the Minnesota State Park system. It can only be reached by boat, 21 miles by water from Zippel Bay State Park. I believe this is the first record for Arctic Tern in the Lake of the Woods area. [mou] Sabine's Gull and Ibis - Lyon County
The juvenile Sabine's Gull was present at 11:00 AM today October 2 on Cottonwood Lake. The bird was swimming along the rocky shore and among the boat docks in the NE corner of the lake. The bird would occasionally fly along the shore but return to the same spot where I watched it for about a half hour. Across the road on Sham Lake there were an estimated 3-4,00 Franklin's Gulls present. One immature Ibis was still present at noon at Black Rush Marsh on the lake just south of the landfill. There were 2-3,000 gulls present in the area, maybe many more, about half Franklin's, half Ring-billed. In and around Granite Falls and south to Marshall there was a large (100's) migration of American Robins, Yellow-rumped Warblers and Cedar Waxwings going on in the AM hours.
