Re: Junk Mail Controls Documentation
Rob wrote: The online help contains this explanation of Junk Mail Controls Junk Mail Controls runs after mail mail filters and applies only to the Inbox folder and its sub-folders. Use this to your advantage, for example, you can filter mail you are sure not to be Junk to a special folder outside of Inbox so that the messages will not be classified as Junk (especially useful if you subscribe to newsletters or if you are on a moderated mailing list). This explanation appears incorrect. Junk Mail Controls in fact also run whenever any folder is opened, resulting in mail previously sorted by message filters being marked as Junk and moved to the Junk folder or deleted, depending on the settings. There is an ongoing discussion of whether the current behavior is appropriate or whether there should be some enhancement to the Junk Mail Controls. In any event, I think the description above is misleading and should be corrected to match the actual behavior of the Junk Mail Controls. Migrating from Netscape 7.2 Mail to Outlook Express 6
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. I'm migrating from Netscape 7.2 mail to Outlook Express 6. Here's the problem: Netscape 7.2 mail doesn't have an Export function and and OE 6's import wizard doesn't recognize Netscape 7.2 salted files (*.slt). So, when one tries to import FROM Netscape 7.2 to OE 6, OE can't see the files. Basically, I'm stuck with Netscape unless I wanted to go with Thunderbird. Thunderbird will import the messages though I'm not intereested in Thunderbird. I want OE or outlook. So usage on the web clearly favours the shortened forms. The dictionaries I just checked acknowledge the existance of the shortened versions. That article says Established publications edited by grown-ups are holding on to the original terms - mozilla's website is not an established publication (the grown-ups part is probably arguable ;) So I think we're fine with either. A more serious point would be consistency - there should really be a consistent usage across the mozilla.org site, but currently we have a mix of the two (e-mail occurs 4000 times vs email 3400 times according to google). word usage (e-mail vs email, log-in vs log in, add-on vs plug-in,performance, etc.)
see http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=53153 For consistancy with (English) documentation, I think we need a style guide to word choices and grammar. Below is just a short list of words that we should watch out for. Feel free to add more entries. Also feel free to disagree with me. e-mail and email: n. electronic mail Both variants are commonly accepted. The general public seems drop the hyphen while editors (and probably English professors) seems to favor e-mail. (I favor e-mail because it retains the original meaning and because it's more readable.) However, since email is used in mozilla more than e-mail is, the hyphen-ized form should be used. Usage: the e in e-mail (or email) should not be capitalized unless it is the first word in a sentence. (Even though Email is more readable than email) Usage: (please prove me wrong if I am) e-mail (or email) is a noun, not a verb. So please e-mail us is incorrect and should be please send us a e-mail. wrong and incorrect: usage: had to point this out because I just made this mistake (had 'please e-mail us is wrong'). Use incorrect, improper, insufficient, etc. log-in: noun e.g. log-in is complete log in: verb e.g. please log in Since log in is not a commonly used word (a person who knows little about computer usually knows e-mail but doesn't know log in), the hyphen should be retained. log-off: noun log off: verb add-on: -- just what the hack this is? alert: all developers in www.mozdev.org plug-in: -- and this? e.g. if Sherlock is a plug-in, what are the search engine things we add to the Search sidebar? Again, hyphen should be retained helper application: needs definition performance use with caution. see http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=126600 while we are on the subject of performance, here is a list of some defintions from ISO 9000:2000 (slightly edited) efficiency relationship between the result achieved and the resources used effectiveness extent to which planned activities are realized and planned results achived quality: degree to which a set of inherent characteristics fulfils *requirements* (/implied, stated, or oblgatory needs or expectation/) quality assurance (QA): part of quality management, focused on providing confidence that quality requirements will be fulfilled note: QA does not guarantee that quality will be achived, that's quality control (QC) document *information* (/meaningful data/) and its supporting medium specification *document* stating *requirements* verification confirmation, the the provision of objective evidence, that specified *requirements* have been fulfilled validation confirmation, the the provision of objective evidence, that the *requirements* for a specific intended use or application have been fulfilled e.g. verify the code against the specification e.g. validate the code against the intended use shall, must, may, etc. see http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2119.txt standard see http://hebb.cis.uoguelph.ca/~dave/343/Lectures/standards.html mozilla a W3C standard-compliant browser? or just another browser (what's up with document.all and marquee)? or something that every other browser should have been? lizard what mozilla is - looks scary, but in fact is friendly :)

need user docs re transferring/importing archived mail
Hi, I noticed a big gap in your documentation on netscape mail. (I posted it also as a bug report with mozilla). (And by the way, I'm suffering now trying to figure out the right way to do it) Often I backup my mail to a CD and have a need for viewing them on other machines. I can copy the folders to the local system, but for the life of me, I have no clue what steps to take to be able to view archived mail on the new system. I've done it once before way back when, and I'm sure I'll figure it out, but the online help documentation needs to contain specific directions about how to import old folders to the mail client. For example, what is the necessary directory structure and what settings need to be added or modified? Ironically, it's significantly easier to import Outlook or Eudora mail than to import old Netscape/Mozilla folders. In fact, the import button doesn't do anything for old Netscape mail. This is an extremely common need, and quite frankly, my difficulty in importing old netscape folders has made me reluctant to use Mozilla mail very much. I know the answer exist somewhere on a newsgroup, but this needs to be in the documentation itself. Below are the major categories for documentation. I would propose that Exporting and Transferring old Mail to Netscape be an additional category on the same level as the categories below. Using the Mail Account Setup Wizard Setting Up Additional Mail and News Accounts Changing the Settings for an Account Viewing or Changing Your Identity Settings Choosing Between IMAP and POP3 Mail Servers Setting POP Server Information Setting IMAP Server Information Setting Newsgroup Server Information Choosing Settings for Copies and Folders Choosing Offline and Disk Space Settings Choosing Addressing Settings Choosing Outgoing SMTP Server Settings Using Instant Messenger with Netscape Mail
