The information given on various internet news outlets at the time it
happened said it was a 50/50 split.

However; that said anything could have happened after the original sale.

Yes, this would make sense, because the server engineers wouldn't have stayed
with AOL/Netscape.

And http://ex-mozilla.wegov2.com/ has a poll I left Netscape when . . .  and

AOL bought Netscape. AOL then spun off the server department into a
cooperative effort with Sun. Netscape itself was never owned in any part by
Sun (not counting any stock they might have owned).

Hopefully, and many webmasters wish for this, if iPlanet did produce the 
NS 4.7 releases, than iPlanets transfer to Sun may indeed mean the end 
of the line for NS 4.7.

The group at Netscape doing the 4.x work _was_ funded by iPlanet.  Where that
group is now in the corporate hierarchy I haven't looked but they still exist.
