Re: [Mpls] Helicopters and Art

2004-11-06 Thread Annie Young
Not only that, Mr. Atherton - I was just "out" with some one - an old
friend - at Molly Quinn's and he was there because he lives across the
street from the New Art Gallery that was opening. He actually went to the
show and said there was nothing in the Gallery that he saw except huge
blank walls. He didn't know if he wasn't in the crowd to see a "privvy"
show or something in the back room. He also said he got a notice in the
mail today that said the helicopter would be doing this for 45 minutes. He
claims it was at least over an hour and he couldn't stand it anymore so
went out for a beer.

What is this all about - Carmel-By-the Sea in Minneapolis - Art Galleries
take over the wordd... someone please explain.

Don't know if this answers your question, but here's a recent Strib story

[Mpls] Wellington Development

2004-11-06 Thread Constance Nompelis
I was at Savers on Lake Street today dropping off a
bunch of things left in my basement by previous
tenants and was suprised at the state of the parking
lot! It's completely torn up over there.

I know that there was some discussion of the
Wellington development at this strip mall site, but
can someone remind me if the tenants are all going to
go? I recall something about the hardware store
leaving, but am more curious about Savers and the
ReUse Center.

Anybody know?

Thanks,

[mpls] re:storm sewer fees

2004-11-06 Thread lizski
I would like to know how EXACTLY the city of Minneapolis is planning on
charging the fee for storm water run-off. I am particularily concerned
as with the water fees set the way they are now, if you are a big WATER
user you pay more for sewer as well. Why not just eliminate the break
people get during the summer for sewer. I think alot of the run off into
the stormwater drains isn't just rain run off because you have alot of
pavement.
An example of this would be my neighbor the CARWASHER. He owns three
vehicles and on any given night during the spring, summer and fall you
can trace the water running down the alley, around the corner, down the
street and into the stormdrain back to his driveway. With the current
system he gets a big water bill and a large sewer bill, though it would
be larger elimnating the summer sewer break. The stormdrain serves a 20
house area if you count the front of some yards and the back alleys of
others. Just how does the city plan to divvy up the bill??? I have no
interest in picking up the tab for his obsession with using his power
washer and ruining the finish on his vehicles, just as I don't want to
pay for the folks who water the sidewalk rather than moving their
sprinklers more often and covering more grass than cement.
Last winter I went around in bulky sweaters and slippers to keep my
heat costs down and it worked..so now the "energy" folks are trying to
re-write the rules and charge me less per therm and more for having a gas
line to my house. I can't cut back on one line but I could cut back on
use. I guess they still need to make record profits. My point is that
until there is a system that is based on actual use (and putting a drain
for every house, building and parking lot could get mighty pricy) and if
the MONEY is needed right now, pick up those extra summer $$$ based on
consumption in 2005 and then plan an equitable system for later.

[Mpls] Nicollet Hotel Block

2004-11-06 Thread Dorie Rae Gallagher

I thought this was rather interesting so passing it on from Neerland & Oyaas...
dorie gallagher/nokomis
Not Signing a Signature Block

The City of Minneapolis is once again marshaling its considerable resources in terms
of time and development talent to attract a proposal to the Nicollet Hotel block north
terminal site on the northern edge of downtown Minneapolis. Community planning and
economic development staff held a pre-proposal conference to introduce staff to the
many players that developers will need to work with to make this complex project a
reality. Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak and Seventh Ward Council Member Lisa Goodman
were both on hand to share their enthusiasm for what they believe is an important
keystone development project worthy of signature architecture. Unfortunately, to date
the word on the street is that the usual developer suspects - and even some unusual
ones - are deterred by the notion that a transit hub must be integrated into the
project. We believe that developers who still have even an inkling of interest should
make contact directly with the MCTCO's new director, Brian Lamb (frequently touted in
this rag). Lamb's unique background and experience demonstrate that he is able to work
toward a number of creative solutions. We hope at least one developer will rise to the
occasion. It would be a shame to see this important block end up as a mirrored bus
garage.

[Mpls] The value of being a pest re- homelessness in Mpls

2004-11-06 Thread m1r3201
There are times when, after seeing the same unfair conditions over and
over...even I could feel like a pest bringing it up one more time.

I have been told that at times, it just seems downright rude to keep on
talking about people forced to live under bridges (oh, yeah, the bridge rods were
put up so the bridges are kind of off limits now too.)

But, it is cold out again...the Holiday season is approaching again and
the Star Tribune had a story about the closing of another shelter (a youth
shelter) again.

I ponder (again) ... what will it take for the majority of elected leaders to
take action and truly work to end homelessness in Minneapolis.

Anyway,... stay tuned for the announcment for the next homeless memorial
march to be held in December of this year.

as far as pests they just never give up...thus their value.
