Re: How long does MQ hold onto a thread on zOS?

Yes, as they have been for quite some time, at least 3 years.  I think what is happening is the job that is loading the queue is not finished before they release the job that does the get-browse and the delete-purge, thus there is a thread into the queue and when there is a thread open, the queue can not be emptied.  If it can't be emptied, it can't be deleted.

How long does MQ hold onto a thread on zOS?

2003-09-30 Thread Jeffrey Ross

Hello fellow MQers,

I need to know how long MQ takes a thread attached to a queue after an application has ended to disconnect.  It should be short, somewhere between instantly and 5 seconds, I would think.  Also, did this value increase from v5.2 to v5.3?

There is one application group in our shop that processes messages via model queues and does a get-browse on their output queues, writes the messages to a flat file and then tries to do a delete-purge.  They do not want to, and will not, do a regular destructive get.  This has worked fine for years, until this week.  Three times so far it has not been able to complete the task and ends with a 2055 error, 'MQRC_Q_NOT_EMPTY'.  A delete-purge works by first clearing the queue, then deleting the queue.  If a thread is attached to the queue, it can not be cleared, thus causing the error that is happening.  I would imagine that an error of 2042, 'MQRC_OBJECT_IN_USE' occurs first, but only the last error is reported by the application.   My thought is that even after the application closes that loads the queue and then another application immediately get-browses, then tries the delete-purge is failing because MQ is keeping a th!
read from the loading application attached.  If this group tries to run the job again later it will do the get-browse and the delete-purge
th no errors.

Possible useful information:
The model queues create permanent dynamic queues because the messages need to be persistent and the queue manager is V5R3 running on zOS 1.4.

Thanks in advance,
Jeff Ross

Re: XMITQ name

Your third word answered your question. It 'recommends'. Call it
whatever you want.

>>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 8/11/03 9:32:26 AM >>>
The manual recommends that the name of the XMIT queue will
be the same as the name of the remote queue manager.
Is that a MUST? (That is can I use the XMIT-Q name as a 'pointer')?
Or did any of you see any site that uses other names for the XMIT
queues?
(e.g. can you configure channels between two queue manager, each with
a
different
xmit queue name?)

Can't install CSD04 on W2K

2003-07-16 Thread Jeffrey Ross
Hello,

Has anybody had any problems installing CSD04 on W2K? I have stopped
all processes and services. The update gets about done then I get an
error saying MQ is still running.

I have confirmed no managers are running with the following command:
dspmq
I have confrimed no listeners are running by the following command:
endmqlsr -m QMGR
I have confirmed in the task manager there are no processes running
I have disabled WebSphere MQ in the Services

Any ideas? Could there be some .dll files that are interfering and
need to be renamed or deleted?

Thanks in advance.

WAS 5.0 Embedded MQ

2003-06-03 Thread Jeffrey Ross
Hello,

I am hoping somebody in this community can point me in the correct
direction.

There is an area in my company developing a Java application that uses
WAS 5.0, embedded MQ and Savvion on AIX. They experience a real slow
down in process time per message when putting multiple messages out
there with more than one thread. The time is good one at a time, but
obviously, that won't work for production volumes. I believe that the
problem is probably Savvion, but I am not familiar with it or WAS 5.0.
The application area is also discussing going to full-blown MQ and not
using the embedded MQ. Has anybody done this? Have you noticed any
improved performance?

I can view the queue manager via command line interface. I was hoping
to view it in the MMC GUI on my Windows machine. However, either it
can't be or it has a different port that I can't find. I created the
SYSTEM.ADMIN.SVRCONN channel necessary and there are no exits on it. I
looked in the normal places to see what the queue manager port is set
to, and there is no entry, leading me to believe it is 1414. However,
that did not work. Does WAS 5.0 Embedded MQ have a default port
different from 1414? If so, what is the default?

Also, any links to manuals for tuning performance would be appreciated.
I've done some searches and can't seem to find what I am looking for.

Thanks,
Jeff

MQ Broker in WAS 5.0

2003-02-07 Thread Jeffrey Ross
Hello,

We have a problem with the MQ Broker in WebSphere Application Server
5.0. When WebSphere is started, everything starts but the MQ broker, an
error is returned stating that the broker could not be started.
However, if the machine is logged in as 'root' and WAS 5.0 is started,
it does start the MQ broker and everything is fine.

Here is what I know from the WAS team:

The user ID they are trying to start WAS with is in the mqm group.

I wish I had more information, but the WebSphere team went ahead with
everything and didn't tell me anything about it until they had this
problem, then I got blind sided with it. I'm not too familiar with MQ
brokers or WAS 5.0, as much of my work tends to deal with just plain old
MQ.

Any ideas on what I can try?

Thanks in advance,
Jeff

Re: 2195 Error

2003-01-15 Thread Jeffrey Ross
Hi,

What I am finding in the error logs and FDC files are "AMQ6209: An
unexpected asynchronous signal (15) has been received and ignored."
Also receiving "AMQ6183: An internal MQSeries error has occurred."

The FDC file also contained Major Errorcode
"xecE_W_UNEXPECTED_ASYNC_SIGNAL"

As stated, this server was rebooted. The reason was to replace an
internal disk that failed. I am thinking that somehow the installation
of MQ is now corrupted.

I appreciate your thoughts. I have opened a PMR with IBM yesterday
evening, but I haven't heard back from them yet.

2195 Error

2003-01-14 Thread Jeffrey Ross

Hello Fellow MQer's,

I have this weird problem with MQ V5.2, AIX
4.3.3.  Our AIX Admins rebooted the machine.  After the reboot I
started MQ and the Client Server and connected through MQ Explorer on
WIn2K.  An application team that uses this particular server informed me
they have been getting 2195 errors and an occasional 2059 error.  I
verified that they were pointing to the correct queue manager and server IP and
I am at loss at what could be causing this.  The application worked fine
prior to this reboot.  There are no error messages in the log.

Has anybody seen anything like this?

My thought is MQ is fine.  I can do an amqsput
and amqsget on the queue the application tries to access, I can navigate around
the queue manager through MQ Explorer and through telnet.  I'm thinking
something wasn't loaded right in the reboot of the server, but I'm not
sure.  Of course this problem occurred late in the afternoon, so I was not
able to find out, yet, how the machine was rebooted.

Thanks in advance,
Jeff

Re: Persistent

2002-11-25 Thread Jeffrey Ross
It won't change messages on the queue already, it will on take effect on
new messages and only those that are defined as
MQPER_PERSISTENCE_AS_Q_DEF or MQPER_PERSISTENT in the MQMD. The MQMD
can override the queue attribute. If you set it as persistent on the
queue and the MQMD is MQPER_NOT_PERSISTENT, then, they will not be
persistent.

Jeff

If I change a queue to persistent, does that change take effect
immediately or do I have to restart the QMGR (NT5.2).

Tejinder,

If you have been administering MQ long enough, those 27 sample
questions should be sufficient to give you an idea of what the test
entails, and you should pass fairly easily. If you are new to MQ, you
should probably work with it for awhile before you try and become
certified.

there

Do any of you know why this could happen ?
I have tried to think it from the perspective of NPMSPEED parm. in the

Please add me to the list as well.

Thanks.

Some people on this list have been asking me to send them the SSL
tutorial
on MQ5.3 for W2K that I mentioned in an earlier email.

The tutorial includes a doco, and a Java port sniffer that
demonstrates
the encryption aspects.

The tutorial is just under 1 megabyte - but I am finding that many
email
servers are rejecting the zip file
because of local security policy - which precludes zip files with
scripts
or applications ( the sniffer).

If your system will reject the Java application then please let me
know
and I will not include it in the distribution.

Cheers

Re: AUTO **** REPLIES!

2002-05-16 Thread Jeffrey Ross

You don't check of the 'FROM' to block, you check off the 'TO' since all
the mail is sent TO the listserv and you are BC'd on it.

When I get notes from the listserv, the header has -

From: so and so

and then it says

Please respond to MQSeries List

so which address is the real one I should be blocking? so and so or
etc ??

Re: AUTO **** REPLIES!

2002-05-16 Thread Jeffrey Ross

I don't use Outlook in the office, but I do at home.

Try to do it by going to 'Message Rules', 'Mail Rules', 'New'. Check
'Where To Line Contains people'. In the 3rd box, there is a blue line
that says 'contains people', click on that and type in the listserv
address ([EMAIL PROTECTED]). Go to the second box and check the
box 'Stop Processing More Rules'. I don't know if this would work, but
I'd try it before you give up.

In my office, we use GroupWise. Luckily, I can set up an out of the
office rule to only reply to internal emails. I choose a filter to not
send it to addresses that contain an '@' sign. For me, people outside
of the office do not need to know whether I am there or not.

Hope this helps.

Okay, maybe I'm dumb, but how (specifically) does one do this in
Outlook?
When I go into the out-of-office assistant, I don't see any way of
setting
up a rule that says not to send one. Once I tried adding a rule to
move the
email to a different folder, because I thought it might move the
message
instead of sending the auto-reply, but it did both. The other option I
see
is to not use the out-of-office assistant and just set up email rules
to
send an email with an out-of-office message only to people in my
company,
but then I don't see how to limit it to just one reply to each sender,
so
they would be getting emails for every email message they send me,
rather
than just one for the duration of my absence.

I've looked, I've tried, I've failed, I need help.

Microsoft Outlook, Lotus CC Mail and Novell Groupwise all support
auto-reply based on conditions.

It only takes a *little* extra effort to setup a smart auto-reply.

Besides it saves all the zillion useless messages, makes your and
everyone
else's email server run that much better.

great idea, but I don't see anyway of not auto replying to the MQ
listers
while continuing to auto reply to others.

  Please respond to
  MQSERIES

At the risk of getting another fifty auto replies... here goes

Can people who subscribe to this list please make sure when they go on
holiday or out of the office for a day they do not send an auto reply
back
to the list. There are some obvious reason for this

a/ For security you shouldn't be telling people all over the world
your
away. Its not difficult to find out where someone lives these days!

b/ Some people still use dial up, and it does kind of discourage you
from
contributing to the list if you know you going to get shed loads of
unsolicited junk back.

c/ There's enough junk flying around the web as it is.

Please show some consideration and ignorance is no excuse any more.
Perhaps
people on the list should all respond to auto replies to discourage
the
offenders.

Thanks
