Then you write a multitasking OS which support so much hardware!

Peuth, wrong answer!!!

The drivers for W9x are mostly written by the manufacters of the card.
Not by MS itself !!
That's why you get those driver disks with all your hardware.
(And why all gaming soft tells you to look at the newest drivers from
your cardmanufacter)
If those HW people would take time to write their drivers for the other

No, this is not completely true!!
If you're writting to the VRAM that contains the spritedata and sprites
are enabled, then you'll need more time !
Apparently the VDP has a one byte buffer and writes this buffer to VRAM
when it has time to acces that VRAM. Since sprite VRAM is used rather
much the available time to write here is much less. So if you write to
fast this byte-buffer is overwritten with new data before the old one is
in the actual VRAM.

Why a login as root doesn't need a password ?

Because it hasn't. Check /etc/passwd.

Is there any kind of text editor in the utilities of UZIX ?

ed.

Are you going to write vi for UZIX ?

I didn't checked vi yet for portability.

UZIX is ready for a NFS ?

Network is too far away from UZIX reality now.

Can UZIX be used with Joynet Cable ?

Yes, but nothing is implemented yet.
There are more important tasks to do before thinking about
network.

 cat /etc/mtab | more
for 3 times my NMS8280 hanged up. What's the problem ?

Hey, you reported UZIX wasn't running on your NMS8280...
What was the problem?

Well, really I don't know. Worked at home. I'll check.

I know that '| more' is not the right command, but why does it crash ?

Probably corrupted inodes when updating the file... :/

Re: UZIX

Jasper and Duddu,

  2. What machine is NMS8280?
The 8280 is a Philips computer with the standard Philips
memory layout: 128K mapped in slot 3-2.

Thanks for the info.

 Special option
on this computer however are its digitizing and super-
imposing capabilities. But this wouldn't have any effect
 on UZIX I suppose.

Yes...

But because it works on other Philips models I think
it should work on the 8280 too. The problems are
probably due to the other hardware (DOS2?).

I received reports of UZIX running in ACVS2+ with MegaSCSI. Also,
UZIX runs fine in TR (wich has internal DOS2).
Easy thing: Duddu, remove your DOS2 cartridge. If UZIX works
without it, that's the problem (weird... DOS2 shouldn't conflict with
UZIX...).

Use ed or adduser (I recommend adduser).
WARNING: filesystem still has bugs. Don't use ed with a file if
you'll save the file with less information (for example, you just deleted
a line from /etc/passwd). The resulting file will be equal the original
(or truncated). See the UZIX page.

Dynamic publisher screen format

1999-07-05 Thread Alex Wulms

Dear all,

Does anybody have any documentation on the .pct fileformat used by dynamic
publisher? Any source, technical description of the internal format or
whatever is welcome.

I want to write a small tool to convert .pct screenfiles into tif format.
This will make it easier to publish old dynamic publisher files on the web in
a format that everybody can handle. Especially since there are numerous tools
to convert tif to other formats, like gif, jpg, etc.

I'll publish the tool and it's source on my homepage when I have made it.

Kind regards,

Alex,

Dynamic Publisher runs in Screen 6, using all 4 pages connected to
eachother (resulting in a 512 * 800 resolution).
As far as I can remember a PCT file is saved using RLE (Run Length
Encoding. in case you forgot). For someone like you it should be a
piece of cake to write a decoder for it.
I'll check a few files the next upcoming days to get some more info
(maybe . if I have time for it I'll try to substract the decoder out
of DP itself).

RE: What is EVA?

Has size of 128x106 pixels and 19268 colors (yes! SCREEN 12), digital
audio (synchronized with video animation, obvious) and no compression

EVA files are not compressed.

The speed is about 12 fps (thanks to 712Kbit/s transfer rate in R800
mode) but can ber configured to 10fps and you can use a external PCM
(this option I don't know but I think that is related to the PCM
REC/PLAY cartridges sold in Japan before 1990).

External PCM indicates that the sound is taken from the 'jack' in the
back part of turbo R.
Internal PCM uses built-in microphone of turbo R.

After the PATCH made from M.Pazos and Okey the limit of a ESE file was
about 32Mb (I've a 24Mb EVA!) and now you can create video clips with
at least 200Mb. Each second consumes 512bytes per second.

Each second takes 150Kb (in 10 frames mode). So each frame takes up 30
sectors.

Any thing about EVA? Ah! You can't play direcctly from CD-ROM because
it must a 512 butes sector (and CD-ROM has 2048 bytes sectors...).

Well, that is not the reason. The reason is that CD drive 'is not fast
enough' using the same read system that in HDD. EVA player read byte by
byte with a SCSI command, and CDs are not fast enough in that way.

Anyway, you can play EVAs from CD with a modified EVA player made by
Trunks (sorry, I don't remember the URL). But don't expect too much, it just
show frame by frame (with sound) but not in the right time. It is slow.
Furthermore, with this program you can see EVA on a turbo R without
MegaSCSI, because it uses MSXDOS2 file handle system.

  End of History...

Ok... more news; Okei is trying to modify EVA program to digitize more
than 32MB on MSX.

Manuel
