AFAIK, auto_update is as of now only supported through inotify, which is
a Linux interface.
Both Mac OS X[1] and Windows[2] seem to have interfaces to get file
system notifications, and glib also has an interface (GFileMonitor[3])
that might work on all three major operating systems.
