Please use the bug tracker, and attach your config and a log file
 (verbose mode).

This has probably to do with the 24 bit playback support MPD gained
for OSS.  Try to force 16 bit mode.  If it turns out that 24 bit
playback is different on FreeBSD/OSS than on Linux/OSS, then we either
need somebody with enough OSS knowledge to fix it (I have neither
FreeBSD nor OSS) or we need to disable it on FreeBSD.

Thanks Max, it is the 24-bit playback; I can confirm that adding:

        format          44100:16:2    # optional

 to mpd.conf fixes the problem.

OSS from ports is fine by the way, I'll talk to the audio people at
 FreeBSD about that.

Sorry, forgot to ask; is there a ./configure knob or something I can
use to disable 24-bit support? Some cursory Googling hasn't turned
 anything reliable up...

Max, appreciate your interest.

I've incorporated your fix from git into the current port [1], which
uses sed to do [2]. I'll talk with the freebsd-multimedia people to
try to fix it 'properly'.

Thanks!

Chris
