Re: OT: [TalkBiz] Who's deleting your email (fwd)
Hi David, * David T-G [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2002-04-05 13.55 -0500]: [...snip...] Surf on over to http://www.talkbiz.com/assassin.html and give it a read. Hmmm. SA seems to be right at least 8 times out of 10 for me anyway. And let's not forget that it *is* configurable. Seriously: ...alleged spam filter system... Any person that recommends this software should be required to re-take their IQ test, to see if they still have one. (Still have an IQ test???) This seems to be some sort of hate campaign; the author of this web page doesn't even /try/ to stick to facts. Makes you wonder if the author 'still has an IQ test' ;) -- Martin | PGP/GPG: | There is no cow Karlsson | 9C924660 |on the ice. msg26790/pgp0.pgp Description: PGP signature

I haven't checked into SA or how it's configured or looked [recently] at the SpamTricks article, but I'd like to know how much of this guy's claim is bupkus and how much is valid. Maybe I'll get to dig into it. Surf on over to http://www.talkbiz.com/assassin.html and give it a read. SpamAssassin works fine for me. I'm using the default configuration and almost all spam gets tagged. It never tagged real email incorrectly. However, I agree with the author: ISP's should never delete mail without the explicit permission of the customer. Marking suspected spam is ok, but not deleting. His attack against SpamAssassin was just to show that filters aren't 100% reliable, and it's true that spamassassin is geared to technical types (it has negative scores for Bugzilla reports, blocks of hexadecimal code, and patches...) As a side note, I subscribed to his mailing list, to see what SpamAssassin would do with it. I just received a You're subscribed message. No confirmation message, no unsubscribe information. No unsubscribe information on the website either. /me thinks I'll receive an offer to make money fast soon... Mvg, Peter De Wachter

begin quoting what Michael Elkins said on Fri, Apr 05, 2002 at 12:29:56PM -0800: That's pretty much what yahoo and hotmail do. They will place spam messages in a separate Spam folder so that the user can peruse through it in case something was blocked by accident. Except, in Yahoo's case, if the spammer pays them. msg26811/pgp0.pgp Description: PGP signature

I have been using junkfilter myself and have been relatively happy with it. It is essentially a list of procmail recipes that can be tuned, turned on/off or excluded altogether. I even went so far as to modify its activity so that it tagged the subject line of offensive mails with [SPAM] so that my wife's Netscape rules could find the emails in her inbox for her (can't talk her into mutt). I have not tried Spam Assassin personally, but I imagine it has many of the same features if you bother to take the time to read the docs ;-). http://junkfilter.zer0.org/ -- David Rock [EMAIL PROTECTED] msg26819/pgp0.pgp Description: PGP signature
