[MLO] Re: In a world without smartphones..

2011-06-04 Thread chuckdevee
Here's where I'm coming from on this. I use MLO desktop very actively,
and what amazes me about it, is its flexibility. The later additions
to functionality such as to-do filtering, formating rules, dependent
tasks and colours and truly inspired. I'm often thinking about putting
in a feature request for something, then figure out a way to do it
using the existing functionality. Using MLO, one can build very
sohpisticated, customised and elegant task management systems. But
things can always be improved and another couple of years of the same
type of development would have been phenomenol.

The mobile platforms have taken precedence during this period but I'm
coming around to the view that MLO really is a desktop/laptop product
and its sophistication and elegance can't really be replicated on a
mobile device (inc ipad) - certainly in any way that would do justice
to MLO.

So I guess - in hindsight of course - my preferred direction of
development would have been to have kept improving and inovating the
desktop product and to have devoted mobile development to building
apps specifically designed as slaves to the desktop product - so that
would be limited functionality on the mobile devices (cloud, on-the-
fly task input, display of saved to-do views and a few other things).
It wouldn't take much for the current iphone version to move to a
level where it would be useful for me in this regard. I don't think
it's particularly elegant, but add in autosync, and syncing of saved
to-do views and then it becomes (for me) an effective mobile slave to
MLO - that's all I really need from a mobile version.

[MLO] Re: In a world without smartphones..

2011-06-04 Thread Philb
I personally was having a hard time keeping up with all the
functionality additions to the Desktop version, and to be honest, they
were distracting me in the use of the product. I would get used to
doing something one way, or having the interface be the way it was,
and then a new version would be released and suddenly things would
change. It was disconcerting, though I can't say I did not appreciate
all of the changes made. However one thing I am certainly
appreciating at the moment, is this relative "quiet" period in the MLO
Desktop release cycle. I am finally getting to understand how all the
filtering works, and yet still finding new things in the tool. While
new features are certainly good, I think MLO packed on a ton of new
stuff very quickly (relatively speaking), and so letting the current
version "mature" for a while, may not necessarily be all bad.

I also REALLY appreciate the PPC development that has been done,
through the functionality it provides. I still have, and use my PPC,
prinicipally for MLO, though I have an Android phone too. I can see
how the users of Mobile platforms are enthusiastic about getting a
version for their platform of choice. Undeniably it must all be a
challenge for Andrey to manage. Though of course, I think we would
agree, he has the right tool to help him with that.

RE: [MLO] Re: How to get around the "Task not found in current outline view. Show all tasks in outline and try to find the task again?" message

2011-06-04 Thread Richard Collings
If I have understood the underlying requirement, you want to search for
tasks and only find those that are not completed?

If so, there is a not very clear drop down above the Search results on the
left hand side where you can choose 'All except completed' which will then
only show uncompleted tasks in the search results.

Does this work for you?

message

Hi Andrey,

I want to second Wesley's request. The steps are different in my case, but
the dialog box is the same:

1. Make sure "Hide completed tasks" is checked. (Completed tasks should be
hidden by now.)
2. Execute a search such that the search string appears in at least one of
the completed tasks.
3. Click a completed task in the search results. The following dialog box is
displayed:

---
Confirm - MyLife Organized
---
Task not found in current outline view. Show all tasks in outline and try to
find the task again?
---
Yes No
---

I have a large number of tasks, with a lot of them completed. I almost
always view the list as filtered (completed tasks hidden), As a result, this
dialog box tends to show up very often during my searches.

I believe the assumption behind it is incorrect - namely, that I want to see
the completed tasks in the search results, and so I should be warned when
they are hidden. In reality it's the opposite: if I'm searching a filtered
list, I am not interested in tasks that do not match the filter. But the
dialog box pops up every time and is really quite annoying.

And the worst thing about it is that if I click "No" in this dialog box, it
will pop up again when I select the next task in the search results. This
makes the list of search results practically unusable until I give up and
click "Yes" to un-filter the list. (But I don't want to un-filter the list!
I want to keep showing only incomplete tasks.)

Such notifications are best implemented as non-modal (as a status bar
message, for example), so that they do not stop the user's workflow. Or, the
dialog could have a "don't show this again" checkbox, which I would check
and never have to see it again.

Side note: as a Windows application, MLO is somewhat odd in that it does not
make any use of the status bar at all. I'd love to see some brief statistics
there, for example (completed/incompleted task counts, etc.). I imagine it
could also be used to display notifications in cases like the above in a
non-intrusive way that does not block what I'm doing.

Thanks so much for considering this request.

No, I want to be able to apply flags in Outline unencumbered by any
dialog boxes - this has nothing to do with Search.

Re: [MLO] Re: How to get around the "Task not found in current outline view. Show all tasks in outline and try to find the task again?" message

2011-06-04 Thread Marek Jedliński
Richard,

What I was suggesting was that the dialog box that pops up again and again
really is a nuisance and should either be removed or made optional (via a
"Don't show this again" checkbox). I imagine (and Wesley's original message
confirms) that this dialog is also displayed in situations other than
searching a filtered list.

Showing a modal dialog box every time a search result is selected in the
list, and thereby interrupting the user's flow when viewing the task list -
this, IMO, is the badly designed part.

In support of my contention, please see "About Face 2.0: The Essentials of
Interaction Design" by Alan Cooper, chapter "Stopping the Proceedings", pp.
138-139. The case in MLO may not be as clear-cut as the examples given there
(e.g. showing a "File deleted" dialog after deleting a file), but it comes
very close, and its effect on the user is exactly the same: annoyance at
being needlessly interrupted.

The drop-down you mention does indeed help in this specific case. It is
quite unobtrusive, so thank you :)

I don't know why you would think a server app would be "less capable" then
individual mobile apps. MLO is xml and java and both are more compatible on
a server then in the mobile arena.

Also, Having to split your resources between a bunch of mobile platforms
limits what is capable of being ported to each.

To me, I would much prefer all of my "ToDO" views on a cloud compared to
only having a couple of predefined views accessible on my smartphone.

Again, once you are talking about tablets and ipads, well that is different,
but for a smartphone, I don't agree. A web app would be far more useful.

[MLO] Re: In a world without smartphones..

2011-06-04 Thread Lee Daniels
I think we are generally in raging agreement here, the words are just a
little different. The core of MLO is and should always be a desktop app. It
would be nice to have a Mac version but we have a PC version and it has all
the power and ease of use any of us could expect at this time and will
slowly continue to evolve.

There are smart phone and I agree that those could be browser based or app
based and they will have the basics and little of the power of the desktop
and are probably best left as tools that can reference and do minor updates
to the cloud but nothing significant. The interface does not well support
any more than this. On my blackberry, the one feature that MLO has that
makes it worthwhile on such a small device is the ability to push an email
directly into my MLO inbox. Since I see most email first on my blackberry,
this is very useful. As for almost everything else about MLO on my
blackberry it is not terribly useful because the interface is too small to
work effectively.

On the other hand, I have adopted the iPad as my mobile world and MLO on the
iPad should be a much stronger tool. All of my views and rules and
formatting that I have setup on my desktop should be available for use
there. I don't care if I cannot define new views on the iPad as much as I
want all that is configured on my desktop to be available to me ti use on
the iPad. The iPad is still a slave of the overall master desktop
application but it should be a powerful slave. I do not believe that this
app can or should be browser based. This app should adopt all of
the phenomenal user interface abilities of the iPad.

I still believe that the advent of MLO on portable devices is the best
enhancement that we could want for MLO, the desktop centric application.
Without extending to the portable devices, MLO would start to loose it's
relevance in this new world of real power in your hands and closer to where
real work is taking place. I can't wait for the iPad beta to appear and hope
to see this version take on a significant subset of the every day
functionality in the desktop version.

*" I can't wait for the iPad beta to appear and hope to see this version

I think that is it in a nutshell. This move to mobile is useful if the
parts of MLO that you use are the ones that actually get ported to these
mobile devices. If what you need isn't being ported then they are less then
useful.

The concern I have is pretty simple. Are porting to all of these mobile
platforms going to limit what features actually gets ported to the IPad? or
the Android Tablet? It's looking like the answer to this question is yes.

Basically, If you are looking for the IPad version to "look like" the
blackberry or iphone version of the product then you will probably be pretty
happy with what is going on. If you are looking for the IPad version to
"look more like" the desktop version then you might end up being
disappointed...
