I suppose there is actually "wrong" uses, or "less productive" uses if you

meaningfull use of goals.

Hi Jean-Marc. Yes, there is a war and just this February the city where MLO
keeps its offices had a terrorist explosion
(http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-31575384). I did computer work in New
York City in 2001 and we lost about four months productivity after the
September 11 attack. One big issue is that it’s terribly difficult to retain
your talented and knowledgeable developers after something like this happens.

Anyhow, I’m staying with MLO not because I feel sorry for the citizens of
Ukraine and not because I’m doing a charitable act, but just because I feel
even the old, tired Android version is by far the most powerful and flexible
task management tool available on Android today.

Just wanted to point out that there is a war going on in Andrey's country

How would we work it out if our country was torn by a civil war.

RE: [MLO] set task properties as active filter

2015-04-23 Thread Dwight Arthur
Hi, Remco.

Bear in mind that when you are adding tasks in a filtered view, each task you
add is being inserted at some specific point in the outline. I don’t remember
the rules and don’t have time to work them out right now (maybe another reader
can help) but whenever you create a task it is either at the root, or the very
top of the hierarchy, or else it has a parent. If you set up the parent with
the context you want, under some circumstances the new task will inherit the
context. Three ways a task can get created include (1) hit the insert button
and type it in, (2) send it in through rapid task entry, (3) enter it elsewhere
then use drag and drop to move it. I forget which of these ways causes context
to be inherited.

Anyhow if you get this set up correctly, your new tasks will inherit contects.
The inheritance will be from the parent and not from the view filter, but if
you set it up right it can have the same result as what you want.

It could then be a problem with a corruption in your MLO file. That happened
to me once - I was able to spot the corruption by opening the .xml file in
another app (can't remember whether it was notepad, Word or something else) and
looking for where the pattern of items parameters goes wrong.

Another way to look for and solve a corruption would be to copy sections of
your MLO file into a fresh file and see when the problem with adding items
comes back. You can narrow it down to one project or a single item with the
problem and then you'll have recovered almost all of your file in the new MLO

Hope that helps,

RE: [MLO] automatize Goal

2015-04-23 Thread Dwight Arthur
Olivier

As you know the tools in MLO can be used a lot of different ways, and anything
that works for you is right, there’s no wrong. So I can’t talk about what
“goal” really means or should mean. I can only tell you about how I use it.

For me, start date tells the first day a task *can* be done and due date tells
the date after which the task is no longer possible or meaningful. These dates
tell when the task is possible, but do not tell anything about when I *want* to
do it. For that, I use importance, star and goal. Importance=200 means that
this task must be done immediately upon becoming active, in other words I want
it to be done within an hour or so. Star means I want it done in a day or so.
Weekly and monthly goals mean that I want it done in a week or so or that I
want it done in a month or so. I wish that there was a quarterly goal but there
isn’t so I use yearly goals to mean that I want it done in a quarter or so.

I do most of my work off of a to-do list called “daily” that shows tasks with a
star, tasks with the context “☆Today”, anything with a due date in the next 3
days, weekly goals last modified more than a week ago, monthly goals modified
more than a month ago, yearly goals modified more than a quarter ago, and some
other stuff. It’s sorted by importance, so tasks with importance=200 are at the
top.

My question to you was based on my perception that you were using three
indicators to get only one indicator worth of information. You are (I think)
looking for tasks that are goals, divided into brackets based on time remaining
until due date. You can already easily divide tasks into brackets based on time
remaining for due date. For example, “((DueDateTime on or after Today+7) AND
(DueDateTime on or before Today+30))” will show you all of the tasks due in the
next month but not in the next week. So all you need is one indicator that a
task is a goal and some well-written filters and you have what you are looking
for. By contrast, indicators that say “I want to get this done within an hour
of when it comes active” or “I want to get this done within a day of when it
comes active” or “I want to get this done within a week of when it comes
active” or “I want to get this done within a month of when it comes active” or
“I want to get this done within a quarter of when it comes active” actually
tells me five different things that I cannot record with fewer than five
indicators.

So to answer your other question, for me a task that’s a weekly goal with a due
date in a year would be a task that *could* be done any time this year but that
I *want* to do this week. A task that has a yearly goal and a due date a week
away would possibly be a task that has been sitting in my queue for a long time
and that’s running out of time. It’s a task that I’m not all that passionate
about but if it isn’t going to get done soon will become impossible or
meaningless. In other words, there’s a good chance it’s a task that’s going to
be deleted.

Hi, Dario. You are not the first person in your position and you won't be
the last. There are a lot of people with pretty similar situations around,
some still looking for help in figuring out what to do and others resigned
to some uncomfortable compromise. This is just my personal opinion and I
really don't know enough about your situation to judge but my take is that
you are stuck at the boundary between task management and project
management.

Task management involves capturing my whole backlog of things that need to
be accomplished, organizing them in a way that helps me quickly and easily
determine what I am supposed to be doing now, get a short list of useful
things to do next, prevents urgent or important things from getting lost,
and minimizes the amount of time I spend managing my backlog instead of
completing it. It may involve figuring out which things in my backlog are
just never going to happen and helping me abandoning them. It may involve
keeping track of what's already done. It may involve figuring out what's
dependent on what so I don't waste time working on things that are not
ready to be completed. It may involve the relationship between my tasks and
somebody else's tasks.

Project management involves identifying resource pools including resource
capacity availability and schedules, planning the allocation of resources
to tasks in a way that maximizes productivity, estimating timeframes and
resource costs for project completion, budgeting, tracking actuals against
plan, adjusting plans to accommodate variances with minimized adverse
effect on profitability, and finding early indications of problems with the
plan and making appropriate adjustments, and so on.

I consider MLO to be the very most powerful and capable task management
software available. I do not consider it to be project management software.
MLO is such a good task manager that it even includes some rudimentary
project management capabilities, maybe even enough to get you and Robert
through your day. maybe not, maybe you really need project management
software. Wikipedia offers a list of 166 different applications for project
management software, maybe one of them would suit you better. I have
previous experience with one of them, Microsoft Project. It required some
expensive hardware and software, a skilled sysadmin to keep the wheels
turning, one to two fulltime team members devoted to ensuring that all the
project plans were up to date plus finding and explaining variances. In
addition every team member spent around a half hour per day recording what
was accomplished, how many hours work remain on each open task, what open
dependencies are blocking their progress, and what unplanned tasks occupied
their time.

It's tempting to try to achieve the high levels of control and
documentation that come from fullblown project management but to do it with
an inexpensive, easy to use task manager. Some people actually do figure
out the compromises necessary to succeed at this. For most, it's like the
search for delicious filling food that isn't fattening, or the search for a
low-risk high-return investment.

Maybe Andrey and the MLO team should invest in making MLO a better project
management tool. It has been suggested often by a lot of people, including
me. But at this point, I think that would just move them from being the
best and most powerful task manager into being a rudimentary,
unsophisticated also-ran project management tool. I wouldn't recommend it.

You say that you encountered the same problem with win 7 and later with win 8.
Maybe the problem appears due to a conflict with some software which you
install like antivirus, or some windows optimisation software.

If your file is located in a cloud storage like Dropbox, try to move it to
another location. Maybe Dropbox is blocking your for during sync.

Also maybe you run by mistake more than one instance of mlo that uses the same
file. Check the task manager next time when the error appears.

2) am I wrong in my use of this function? (not intended to mean "THIS year,
THIS month or THIS week as I do, but rather YEARLY, MONTHLY, WEEKLY")

[MLO] Re: So apparently beta testing for Android version 2 STILL hasn't started....(sigh)

2015-04-23 Thread Jean-Marc Meessen
Just wanted to point out that there is a war going on in Andrey's country
(Ukrainia) if I am not mistaken. This can explain the "slugish"
development. How would we work it out if our country was torn by a civil
war.

2015-04-23 Thread Remco Vaal
It will be really helpfull if you have setup workspace on desktop with a

I suggest, MLO people, you'd release something asap, because you are losing
Android customers. And when a new "boat" will fit the needs, soon or later you
will lose Windows customers.

[MLO] Re: Computed Score not working

2015-04-23 Thread 'Ron' via MyLifeOrganized
I have set up a view and sorted by computed score. As far as I can see
there is no computed score working. I have set in my options to show my
computed score in task statistics. I show importance as zero, urgency as
zero, and Importance&urgency as zero on all tasks. I checked on my laptop
(which I sync to) as well last night and it is showing the same results.
Not sure if there is something wrong with my mlo file or if it is
something else. I have re-installed software to no avail. I told it to
get rid of my settings but when I re-install it still shows my license,
etc...
