Re: MySQL vs SQLServer vs PostgresSQL

2001-04-19 Thread Kevin Pratt

The reason I asked...
quote from another mail list I am on...

"IMO - mysql is just a disaster you are inviting on yourself.

you should see the responses to some recent bug reports - "we broke it
purposely because it made things faster..."

I looked over the code for the client libraries when we were having
problems with mysql recently - it would be far faster if they just cleaned
some of that mess up and did it correctly. It is very intolerant of a
loaded down system.

We have run load tests ourselves, and postgres performs much the same under
heavy load as no load, whereas mysql quickly gets slow and then just starts
erroring out past a certain point.

If you would run a commercial site with Access, then you'll love unix's
answer to Access - Mysql.

We have had ihtml/postgres/odbc pooling working well under huge loads
during our tests, where mysql could not compete at all. Furthermore
postgres has a far richer set of functionality mysql users can only dream
about.

They are both free so I guess I can't say postgres is better value for the
money :)

You have to install from the command line yes, but generally a fresh unix
install will include postgres if you tick it off during initial install.
Otherwise get an rpm version and it is only a few commands to install it.

The docs for postgres are also excellent for an open source project."

Yes, like emacs is the notepad for unix.
