Thanks

Ricardo,
I've spent the past month doing the same thing and have come up
empty. There aren't any free or low cost case tools out there that work
properly. The best one that I've found is Case Studio 2 and to reverse
MySQL database it costs $499. It is certainly not cheap, and it won't
preserve the data if you regenerate the schema like XCase does.
Unfortunately XCase doesn't have a MySQL version. Case Studio eval does
let you create a 6 entity diagram so it is useful up to a point. The Dezign
eval is severely crippled and is pretty much useless. I looked at a variety
of freeware versions and they were quite buggy and the output quality was
poor. It appears that the cheaper the case tool, the more screen flashing
you have to put up with. The output of the cheap case tools makes it
look like it was drawn by a 4 year old. There is also MS Visio Enterprise
that supposedly can reverse engineer a MySQL database, but you may need to
sell you car in order to purchase it. But after re-reading your message
today I went on a scavenger hunt. (I don't give up easy.)

Let's see, you want a case tool that will reverse engineer a MySQL
database (and other databases too of course like PostgreSQL), draw great
looking ER diagrams, have access to your table definitions, produce great
looking output that will impress your client, generate your database and
even synchronize the changes, have PDF documentation up the wazoo, plus be
very easy to use. And oh yes, it has to be free. Hmm. Impossible you say?
Try clicking here for your Christmas present:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/visio2000enterprise/ORMtool/3.1/WIN98
/EN-US/msvm31.exe
. It is VisioModeler from MS and yes, it is free!! (And for you doubters
out there, it is NOT an eval copy!) Yes, it is free, it works, it is a
legal copy, and it is from MS. Isn't that a double oxymoron or something?

I just found VisioModeler a few minutes ago and tried it out. You
can use the generic ODBC driver to pull in your MySQL table structure. The
look and feel is fantastic and has plenty of options. MS no longer supports
it (it is 2 years old), but the readme file does mention a support group.
If you intend to synchronize the schema changes with your database, I would
use a copy of your database and see if there are any problems first. I
don't know about you, but I'm going to spend the weekend documenting my
databases.

 Enjoy! :)

Brent

ER Program

2002-03-21 Thread Ricardo Striquer Soares

i am looking for a ER Design Freeware tool, i'd like to konw if does
someone here knows about something like that, the tool name and,
if possible, the url for download.

currently i am using a DDT (Database Design Tool) V1.5, however
i think it's too simple with that i can not create indexes, i saw one
named dezign for databases which is a tool indicated by the MySQL AB,
although in it's free version i can only create at last 10 entities and in
each
one i can create about of 10 filds only.

thanks advanced.
