Probably because you are attempting to start mysqld as a normal user rather than as root. Typing mysql at the prompt tells me: ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/opt/local/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2) The client normally connects via the unix socket file /opt/local/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock, which is created by the server at startup (and removed at shutdown). mysql is the client. As the server (mysqld) failed to start, the client (mysql) has nothing to connect to. Hence the error. Very confused as to why it isn't working. Hello. /opt/local/var/Mattys-iMac-G5.err: Operation not permitted Check the permissions on /opt/local/var directory.
