I installed MySQL 4.0.5a using the RPMs downloaded from
http://www.mysql.com on RedHat 8.0.
I also installed unixODBC that comes with the RHL 8.0 CD.
When I try to install the MySQL odbc driver I get the unresolved

I created a symlink from libmysqlclient.so.11 to 10 but it still does
not work.
I got it only to work by downgrading from MySQL 4 to 3.
Is there a way of having ODBC working with MySQL-4.0.5a?

You should be able to install the client libraries from an older version
of MySQL and still use the latest server.
If you are installing from source, there is an option: --without-server
in the configure script that builds only the client libraries.
So find where you can get a libmysqlclient.so.10 from (maybe 4.0.4 or
4.0.3 - I haven't been paying too much attention) and compile install
with --without-server.
