if you can normally connect with plain settings to the mysql server, then it might be the drivers from websphere, which then tell me, ask them :)
in addition you can dump traffic from the websphere thingy to your db server in order to see WHAT the packages are carry-ing so that you can see for yourself what is being sent, what should be sent, and does it actually sent anything at all?
