Josiah.. I think you are asking the wrong mailing list for this... I am assuming you are using PHP correct? Your explanation isn't all that clear, but I can guess what you are trying to do. You want to have a drop down list, but don't know what data type..
You can use VarChar or text for this. Varchar means you other characters besides text in the fields.
