Did you just install a glibc upgrade/bugfix? That was the culprit when this happened to me on RH7 a while back. I'd upgraded glibc, but hadn't upgraded mysql, which was linked against the old version and didn't like the new one. Why up2date let me get away with that, I don't know, but it did.
