hi Nils!
 
  can u show me how to change the long_query_time 
using sql statement or by using mysqladmin.

the set long_query_time=xyz;  does not work or is this
a valid command.
i am using mysql 3.23.52

In 3.23.xx you must restart MySQL server, if you change server options in my.cnf.
