What if binary log's suffix number exceeds 999?

 By default, binary log file uses 3-digit number suffix as its counter.
 Then, without reseting master logs suffix number may reach 999. If so,
 what happens?
 next suffix number is 1000 or 001? Otherwise error occurres?
