Probably I was late in replying (just busy with some stupid work). In all the API if you dont specify the dbname in the mysql_connect() functions. In C the connection function is mysql_real_connect(), in PHP its mysql_pconnect(), donno about other APIs. You can get a list of dbs by issueing "show databases" SQL.
