RE: [mythtv-users] X over PVR-350 TV Out (possible or just a myth?)
Check the ivtv-dv list for my latest ivtv patch. Or as a workaround before starting X send some small amount of output to /dev/video16. dd if=/dev/video0 of=/dev/video16 bs=64k count=1 Either of these "should" fix this problem, though I would recommend the patch approach. [mythtv-users] nuvexport mpeg problems -- fixed?
Ok, I've switched from using tcprobe and/or mpgtx to using mplayer for pulling info about mpeg2 files. This should hopefully solve the rash of transcode-related detection problems that people were having with dvb and some pvr-x50 files. Please note that transcode-based exporters (that's most of them until I get time to port them to ffmpeg) will still likely not work (someone -- one or two at the most -- post to the mailing list if this is the case). However, changing is_mpeg to 0 (line 124 of nuvinfo.pm) will at least give you a usable workaround if transcode can't deal with the files. and I *will* be switching most modules over to ffmpeg when I have the time. As usual, the files are in myth cvs and at: http://forevermore.net/files/nuvexport/ -Chris Please also note that mythtv allows for a "system" type of mpeg stream. I couldn't find an example of this to get the correct output from mplayer, so if by some chance you have this kind of file, you'll get a bunch of data output along with a note to email it to me. Once I get this info, I'll be able to update nuvexport to properly recognize the file format. ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

[mythtv-users] can't change keybindings in mythtv 0.16
Please excuse my question if it appears naive, I'm new to the mailing list and mythtv in general. I've found most of the answers to my questions via the archives, but I have yet to find an answer to the question posed here: http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/89775 In short, I can't seem to change the keybindings in mythtv via mythweb (FC3, ATrpms mythtv-0.16-82.2.rhfc3.at) - they always reset to the default settings. Has anyone found a solution/workaround to this? Other than this minor issue, I have to say mythtv is the bee's knees. Regards, Tim -- Morals? [mythtv-users] "Prebuffering pause" and no sound
AverTV Studio, Fedora Core 3 When I watch live TV in MythTV, the video stops every few seconds and says "Prebuffering pause". Also, audio isn't working. However, when not in MythTV, the "tvtime" program display live TV just fine with audio. I read around that it might be related to software based sound but I don't know if this is it or not. I also read something about disabling the NVidia driver but I don't know if that will have any effect (tvtime works). Thanks for any help. ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users
Re: [mythtv-users] prebuffering pause related to agpgart?
HI! Darren Richards wrote: I have had the same problem with 2.6.9 and FC2 (Celeron 1.3 GHz). I have come to the conclusion, that you cannot use NVidia's AGP driver, if AGPGART is compiled into the kernel (I have tried several kernel boot parameters to get rid of AGPGART unsuccessfully). So, I have set NvAGP=3 in xorg.conf and so AGPGART is being used (again check /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status). X is still using CPU, but much less (13%). I don't know, if it would use only 1% CPU with NVidia-AGP, as it does on another machine with FC1/Kernel 2.4/NvAGP=1 or if the higher X usage is coming from FC2/Kernel 2.6. At least the prebuffering pauses are gone with AGPGART. NvAGP=3 didn't seem to help much. I think I'm seeing fewer prebuffering pauses, but X is still taking about 40% and mythfrontend is taking about 55%. If I enable kernel deinterlacing (which I used with FC1), I still get a prebuffering pause every 2-3 seconds. Is AGP enabled now (/proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status)? It looks like my only solution is to compile the kernel without agpgart, unless there's an rpm package out there somewhere. I've never compiled a kernel before... It's not too hard. There should be plenty of HowTos on the web. Thomas ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users
[mythtv-users] I am not sure what happened..
Hi. When I did all the configuration changes and tests suggested by the documentation and comments from other members of this list I had LIRC & TV-OUT on my PVR-350 working. However, in the last reboot both LIRC and the TV-OUT (X on TV-OUT) stopped working. As a fairly new user of mythtv, I have to agree that a help system or "new user documentation" would be helpful. Something non-technical and more user manual related. I found that the documentation available for mythtv was good, and reasonably thorough, although lacking a few (common?) technical issues, but I have only been able to find a couple pages worth of how to use mythtv itself. One thing that I thought rocked about my ReplayTV was it came with a recorded "show" of how to use the box. It was about a half hour long, and showed how each menu worked and how to schedule shows, etc. I'd be willing to help contribute to a user manual, although, I'm still learning how to use mythtv by trial and error. :) -Kenneth ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

[mythtv-users] APT-GET Broke IVTV and Myth
Okay, not sure where is right, but I am gonna post here and if no one answers post everywhere else. Just updated my Fedora Core 2 installation with apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade, which installed a new kernal and when switching to that kernal I had to also install a new nvidia kernal module, I think whats missing is that I dont have the new IVTV kernal module and not sure how to get it, but I get errors in dmesg right after the update and a restart My box couldnt change channel and kept changing guide info but same channel was listed, error read as unknown tuner type, noticed when it was working that it was discovering my tuners as type 2 so I set it to type 2 in my modprobe.conf and could again change channels but still get errors about unknown tuner type hopefully this will be an easy fix, anyone else know what I did wrong? I daresay what's clearly needed most of all is a help system, so new users do not remain unaware of features and commands open to them. I'm not too surprised the users are unaware of this, you have to go into mythweb (which many users might not even know exists) and set up keystrokes for the jump commands for all your frontends (independently) then LIRC configuration to have your remote issue those keys. If such a help system were to appear (presumably by pressing something like "?" on any screen) I would be happy to write up some help screens. Generally you would want screens that explain your options on that page, any special keystrokes that work only in that area, and links to master pages of general commands and keystrokes, as well as a link in mythbrowser (or for that matter firefox) to web pages with more detailed help Thus these users would have hit help (The theme would be encouraged to have '? = help' in the corner of the screen) and help would appear in the main menu (possibly displacing something else). They would have had to follow the help chain to general commands which would have featured a section on "Keystrokes that work anywhere" or a section perhaps called "How to configure your remote and keyboard keys to do things". I would recommend there be some predefined keystrokes, like: Alt-T -- Watch live TV Alt-R -- Recordings list (Watch Recordings) Alt-G -- Program guide for scheduling Alt-S -- High level scheduling menu Alt-I -- Info center Alt-D -- Optical Disks/Dvds as a possible reasonable default set. I think these are the most common commands (with Live TV and Recordings List the big winners by far) but of course heavier users of MythMusic and other tools will have those on your list. ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

I usually use Gnome on my desktops rather than KDE, but I suspect they have some of the same issues. It just takes a few extra seconds to fire up the WM, it clutters up the desktop with panels and crap. I never use the multiple desktops it makes available. It throws a lot of crud into my home directory. It just dosn't seem to be what's needed for this application. [mythtv-users] 1 PVR-250 for Digital and Anolog Cable
OK, I thought I can do this but I'm stumped. I currently subscribe to Digital comcast cable. I have mythtv recording standard cable only via the coax-connector directly into the Hauppauge PVR-250 tuner. This works fine. So, I wanted to use the S-Video (or component) on the *same* 250 card to record the digital or higher channels too. What I've done thus far.. 1. In mythtv-setup I added another Capture Card (even though I only have 1) to add component4 output. The tuner0 is already setup. 2. Then in Input connections, I enable component4 to use the same comcast digital cable channels, as the tuner0. 3. Restarted mythtv-backend. Now when I go to watch Live TV I am able to hit the "C" key and switch between tuners (component4 and tuner0) and this worked OK for Video only. The tuner0 input still works fine for both audio and video. I have the component4 (digital video output from cable) receiving the video signal fine. I have to manually tune the cable box for now. I'm planning on setting up the IR blaster for this. The sound is not working obviously due to no audio input connection to the PVR250. Coax carries both video and audio, but... How do I enable the audio for the digital cable? Currently the digital cable box, has only 2 audio Left/Right outputs that are already going to the TV's audio in. There is no other available audio out on the cable box. Do I use a splitter for this? Also should I plug the audio into the PVR250's "line in"? Next, if this does work with only 1 PVR250, can I somehow configure the recordings to use the proper input? component4 for the digital cable, and tuner0 for the analog? FYI, The digital cable box is the Motorola DCT5100 that also includes HDTV. Thanks for all the help! I ask because I had big CPU usage when I fooled around with some of the recording settings and changed them from 480x480 to something which I naively thought would be better. You're telling I can see how there's no easy win. If you enable autoexpire, then old shows will vanish when the disk fills. If you leave it off, one new show will get truncated mid-way (oddly this can be more frustrating than not recording at all depending on where it cuts out) and no new shows will be recorded until you notice. Neither outcome is great. All the other PVRs I have seen default to expiring old recordings, are there others that don't? It is my taste but it need not be everybody's. A possible outcome is to make it clear. For example, if a person sets up a recording and sets it to "allow auto expire" (which is, I think, the default) they perhaps should get a warning indicating that this option will not do anything unless they enable global auto expire. Or perhaps change "Allow Auto Expire" to "Allow Auto Expire (currently disabled)" or somesuch. The merit lies in making livetv and recording as identical as possible. The more identical they are, the easier it is to implement things on top of both. This suggests, I would think, that you want to avoid things that can happen in one but not in the other. For example it makes conversion from live to longterm trivial (just flipping some bits.) It even allows things like changes of quality inside a recording (which as you probably know Tivo refuses to do when you try to convert a live tv session to a permanent recording.) No one part of me feels that live TV is an abberation you are supposed to get over when you use a PVR and so it's not worth so much effort. If it weren't the first thing most people encounter, this would be even more true. I do see your point that the gains from chunking recordings might be had other ways (though deletion of the first part of a recording is probably hard any other way in a low-free-disk environment) though. The goal though is you would not coalesce the chunks, that the transcoder and commercial flagger would have to be aware of them just as the player is. (Not quite as much as they don't need to worry about real time transitions.) However, let this not distract from the main goal of some unification, and hopefully the always-recording goal. ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

RE: [mythtv-users] Switching between capture card
Hi all, I have multiple BT 878 cards in one MythTV. How can I switch between capture card? The C key only switch between the inputs of one card. * On a related note: I have 2 ivtv cards in my box - a PVR250 and a M179. My M179 is my main "watch" card, primarily because I tend to record a bit on channels 6-9, and the M179 doesn't pick those up as well. Anyway, sometimes I'm watching one of the bad channels through the M179, and I'll want to switch to the other card, since the picture is better. When I do this, it won't let me view the channel that the M179 was on. I have to first change the M179 channel to one I know I won't be watching, and then Switch cards with "Y". If you mean a physical frame aspect ratio change, then I'd > like to detect this at some point but don't have any sample recordings > to test with right now (I'm in the U.S. with analog cable). Well it would be black bars on the side of the program if anything rather than black bars on the top and bottom of the adverts. In a DVB-T stream there are two ways of handling aspect ratios. For simple 4:3 vs 16:9 it can be done with a simple flag. In that case then the transmitted data is always the full picture area and the flag tells the receiver what aspect ratio to use when displaying the data - the resolution doesn't change, so would be 720x576 or 704x576 in the UK depending on the channel. The other option is to use an AFD where a 16:9 picture is transmitted and if the content is 4:3 then there are black bars on each side. There is then an Active Format Descriptor (AFD) which indicates which part of the transmitted picture to display. That allows more choice of ratios but in the UK at least only 4:3 and 16:9 are used. Some channels use AFDs in the UK and some use the simple flag. Most of the AFD channels don't have adverts however, but I think there is one that does - certainly Five was, but it may have changed recently. I'm not sure how Myth handles those two cases however, or what you see in the stream when you read it back from disk. With a bit of scripting knowledge and a reasonably clean code base for the web app it shouldn't be too hard to put together something like that - you'd just need to write a CGI that accepts a a filename and sends it to mplayer (stopping any other currently running track first, of course - if you want to get really fancy, you could try cross-fading :-) ) and then hack the web app so that its play buttons link to that CGI instead of whatever it uses to do the streaming. Given a nice, slim web app, this shouldn't take more than 2 hours, maybe a lot less. I'd look into it, but I'm swamped with other stuff at the moment. I believe the ebuild available at http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=66337 is the one that most gentoo users are using. It makes sense to have really no difference between live tv and recorded tv. Both should be able to be recorded in chunks, and played back and seeked-within seamlessly in chunks, I would think. The live-tv concept becomes just another recording, but it shifts chunk on a channel change, and has quick auto-expire of old chunks (based on the desired buffer size) The use of chunks on regular recording would allow the deletion of the front of a program. For example, often I have a large movie on disk, and I watch an hour of it, and am comfortable if that hour is then free for expiration, while the hour I have not yet watched should actually become immune from expiration -- because now I really, really want to watch it. Truncation from the end is easier if the filesystem supports it, but chunks can also help there. I suppose sparse files could also be used to accomplish the removal of the front of a program. But the key is the first thing you write about, to try and normalize the two forms so they really use the same underlying tools. I think this would be a good idea. Related to this topic, it's my opinion that if you have zero-CPU encoding cards (pvr-x50, pchdtv) that you want two other behaviours. a) It should be nearly impossible to lose the live buffer you are watching. Definitely not simply because you pause and go to other menus in the system. I do this often. Two people are watching a show. One person needs to pause. The other person then wants to do other things with the box -- schedule other recordings, watch another show while person #1 is doing what she wants, etc. You can do this watching a recording but not live TV. Normalizing them would help this. b) Generally this means not stopping live recording ever except for scheduled recordings, though this might be an optional feature because it does mean some disk activity. For example, when you turn on a Tivo, you can rewind 30 minutes in whatever channel it was on when you turned it on. I put these forward as things to consider when debating how to alter the character of live TV mode. ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users
Re: [mythtv-users] is there an easy way to reboot in software through myth
If you're using one of the Fedora/Red Hat distros and you already have the swatch packages installed then making it run at startup is as simple as logging in to your box as root and typing "/sbin/chkconfig swatch on". chkconfig is a very easy to use tool that allows you to configure which services are started and stopped in each runlevel on your box. Try /sbin/chkconfig --list to see a list of all services and their default modes in each runlevel. Re: [mythtv-users] Controlling mythmusic from mythweb
Well, personally I prefer a web interface over picking music with a remote control. I realize that I can ssh into the mythbox and run mplayer, but I just find it a bit strange that with all the impressive looking streaming web apps that seem to be out there, I can't find a single one that has an option of sending the files to mplayer instead of streaming them. Netjuke (http://www.netjuke.org) can do that -- it supports three different modes. It can stream files over an http connection, or you can use it to control a shoutcast/icecast playlist, or you can use it to control a server-side playlist (which you would then play with mplayer). I haven't used it this way myself, so I can't tell you how well it works, but I've been very happy with the web streaming side of things. note: this is v1 I'm talking about. Development on v1 stopped quite a while ago and the project seemed dead, but recently the developers have started working on v2 and have released a beta or two. Having tried the v2 betas, I'd recommend sticking with v1 at the moment. Scott -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. [mythtv-users] dvd playback via usb2.0
I am attempting a MythTV setup where I must have the dvd drive in an external enclosure, connected to the PC via usb2.0. I can connect the USB DVD drive, mount and playback (via mplayer), but it is very choppy, some part of the system cannot keep up. This is true if played from mythfrontend or command line. Sadly, if I do the same experiment on a XP box with the same speed processor, it plays DVDs just fine. I note that even an XP box can playback via USB1.0 better than my linuxbox. My limited understanding of DVD playback is that DMA from the DVD drive to the HD is very important for smooth playback. But I'm not sure how to accomplish this via USB. Anyone have any suggestions for smoothing up the DVD playback? I have a Celeron 2GHz, 256Mram, a pioneer DVD drive, using Fedroa Core 2, with kernel 2.6.8-1.521, myth .16 driving out to a nvidia GeForce MX400, with nvdia 6629 drivers. Re: [mythtv-users] Re:Multiple frontends watching the same backend program.
In my mind, what I'd like it to do when I select "live tv" when the tuner is already in use is to inform me what's going on, then take me directly to the recording in progress. I'm thinking of it as the satellite box my Dad used to have, where you could change the channel from any tv, but everyone got the same show. For those of you who have seen tivo, he means just like TiVo does. If its recording a show and you press livetv it takes you to the 'live' part of the recording. From here you can't change channel unless you cancel the recording. But you can do trick play etc on the current show or go back to the start of it and watch it. I think borrowing this feature would be a great idea if it doesn't have it already. In gentoo, if you don't specify a window manager in /etc/rc.conf (or in your home directory) you get a really simple one that I think may be a part of Xfree/Xorg. Maybe it has a name. I don't know. Initially, I was running without a window manager, but this proved to be problematic for things that used an external program, like MythVideo and MythGame. The keyboard focus wasn't behaving nicely. Then I tried using ratpoison, based on advice from numerous threads on the same topic that you can find in the list archives. Then I wanted to use xrandr to switch resolutions based on the source material (for HDTV signals so that Myth isn't converting 1080i to 720p). This required a change to wmi ("window manager improved"). My only complaint about wmi is that it pops up an xterm with the man page when it starts up, and I haven't been able to figure out how to stop that (the documentation says it only does it the first time, but it seems to always think it's the first time--I'm near to the point of patching the code to replace the command with /bin/true). --PC ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

I'll give you a hint: there's this neat little web site at http://www.google.com/ that can help you find information like that. --PC ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

Re: [mythtv-users] Which Window Manager?
At 20:18 19/01/2005, you wrote: Now that we've had a nice long thread discussing distributions, let's talk about window managers. KDE and Gnome sould like *way* too much overhead for a Myth frontend. Anyone using other window managers? Lots of people here using stuff like Fluxbox and other *boxes, EvilWM, RatPoison... all of them are pretty lightweight and require the bare minimum of external libraries, if any. None of my Myth boxes have Gnome or KDE installed, and Qt is pretty much the only GUI library I have. XFCE is quite popular for people who want a lightweight WM/DE but still want a fairly good desktop for non-Myth usage; for a dedicated box, it's overkill. ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users
RE: [mythtv-users] Which Window Manager?
For my front end xserver I don't use a window manager. You don't need one since you are only running mythtv. However if you do want one ratpoison keeps getting mentioned. The "sort of" part is that I still can't start the stream from the web interface. I have to push the command through the CLI. Wondering if this is due to a permission problem? When the "Start Stream" button is pushed, the window showing what is in the log file shows that "vlc" is not a recognized command, like this: Starting Stream of 1249_2005011816_20050118163000.nuv /video/mythstreamtv/mythstreamtv.sh: line 37: vlc: command not found I'm not sure which permission to tweak, if that's the problem. Any suggestions? Btw, thanks all for the help. This is a very, very cool feature. Thanks Joshua for taking the time and sharing! [mythtv-users] Looking for a *nix DAAP client & player w/Ogg support
So, I've got my Myth box serving out my music collection with mfd. Now I can use the mfe plugin (just for experimentation, mythmusic is still more mature...), and I can listen to music via iTunes on my wife's iBook. But, what do I use to access my collection from another Linux box? I have a little VPN set up at work to access my home network, but the only DAAP client software I can find is Java-based, doesn't provide much of an interface, and (worst of all) only plays mp3s. Most of my collection is in Ogg Vorbis, so this is problematic. I've tried setting up netjuke, and while it works, it seems like I should be able to do everything with just mfd (after all, isn't that the whole point of DAAP?). There are several DAAP server solutions for Linux, but the only native client solution seems to be mfd/mfe. Unfortunately, running mythfrontend on my workstation at work is not a good option. So, anyone come across a DAAP client player for Linux w/Ogg support? -JAC ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

Re: [mythtv-users] Mythtv Distro Help
I have the same basic equipment running under FC3 with a P4-2.4/865 chipset platform. All installed pretty readily without much issue. This was my first experience installing Linux. The only thing that gives me troubles is my ATI remote... Jarrod's guide (which was quite helpful) assumes one is using a remote with the PVR card. I don't have such an option on the PVR250-MCE. I can use the built-in kernal "ati-remote" function, but the key mapping doesn't match. Trying to use lirc_atiusb has been a tragic failure of my time invested. The links I found are out-dated and don't apply in my case. On Wed, 19 Jan 2005 10:18:31 -0800, Gregg <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > I am going to build a new mythtv box.
