RE: [mythtv-users] X over PVR-350 TV Out (possible or just a myth?)

2005-01-19 Thread John Harvey
Check the ivtv-dv list for my latest ivtv patch. Or as a workaround before
starting X send some small amount of output to /dev/video16.

dd if=/dev/video0 of=/dev/video16 bs=64k count=1

Either of these "should" fix this problem, though I would recommend the
patch approach.

[mythtv-users] nuvexport mpeg problems -- fixed?

2005-01-19 Thread Chris Petersen
Ok, I've switched from using tcprobe and/or mpgtx to using mplayer for
pulling info about mpeg2 files. This should hopefully solve the rash of
transcode-related detection problems that people were having with dvb
and some pvr-x50 files.

Please note that transcode-based exporters (that's most of them until I
get time to port them to ffmpeg) will still likely not work (someone --
one or two at the most -- post to the mailing list if this is the case).
However, changing is_mpeg to 0 (line 124 of nuvinfo.pm) will at least
give you a usable workaround if transcode can't deal with the files.

and I *will* be switching most modules over to ffmpeg when I have the time.
As usual, the files are in myth cvs and at:
http://forevermore.net/files/nuvexport/
-Chris
Please also note that mythtv allows for a "system" type of mpeg stream.
I couldn't find an example of this to get the correct output from
mplayer, so if by some chance you have this kind of file, you'll get a
bunch of data output along with a note to email it to me. Once I get
this info, I'll be able to update nuvexport to properly recognize the
file format.

Due to popular interest, I preformed some tests and it seem not to
work. I tried to wake from a full system shutdown and noted that the
BIOS hadn't changed it alarm time. It may work if suspended to ram.

[mythtv-users] new ati driver and pundit-r tvout, still no go

2005-01-19 Thread Steven
Tried it but the TV-out still doesn't work on the pundit's 9100IGP.
Save yourselves some time and keep using the old version that you could
get to work with the hex-edit trick.

Anyone have news on tv-out with the opensource driver?

[mythtv-users] can't change keybindings in mythtv 0.16

2005-01-19 Thread Tim Fenn
Please excuse my question if it appears naive, I'm new to the mailing
list and mythtv in general. I've found most of the answers to my
questions via the archives, but I have yet to find an answer to the
question posed here:

http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/89775

In short, I can't seem to change the keybindings in mythtv via mythweb
(FC3, ATrpms mythtv-0.16-82.2.rhfc3.at) - they always reset to the
default settings. Has anyone found a solution/workaround to this?

Other than this minor issue, I have to say mythtv is the bee's knees.

Regards,
Tim

[mythtv-users] "Prebuffering pause" and no sound

2005-01-19 Thread Scott Simpson
AverTV Studio, Fedora Core 3
When I watch live TV in MythTV, the video stops every few seconds and
says "Prebuffering pause". Also, audio isn't working. However, when not
in MythTV, the "tvtime" program display live TV just fine with audio.

I read around that it might be related to software based sound but I
don't know if this is it or not. I also read something about disabling
the NVidia driver but I don't know if that will have any effect (tvtime
works).

Thanks for any help.

Re: [mythtv-users] prebuffering pause related to agpgart?

2005-01-19 Thread Thomas Börkel
HI!
Darren Richards wrote:
I have had the same problem with 2.6.9 and FC2 (Celeron 1.3 GHz). I have
come to the conclusion, that you cannot use NVidia's AGP driver, if
AGPGART is compiled into the kernel (I have tried several kernel boot
parameters to get rid of AGPGART unsuccessfully).
So, I have set NvAGP=3 in xorg.conf and so AGPGART is being used (again
check /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status).
X is still using CPU, but much less (13%). I don't know, if it would use
only 1% CPU with NVidia-AGP, as it does on another machine with
FC1/Kernel 2.4/NvAGP=1 or if the higher X usage is coming from
FC2/Kernel 2.6. At least the prebuffering pauses are gone with AGPGART.
NvAGP=3 didn't seem to help much. I think I'm seeing fewer
prebuffering pauses, but X is still taking about 40% and mythfrontend
is taking about 55%. If I enable kernel deinterlacing (which I used
with FC1), I still get a prebuffering pause every 2-3 seconds.
Is AGP enabled now (/proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status)?
It looks like my only solution is to compile the kernel without
agpgart, unless there's an rpm package out there somewhere. I've
never compiled a kernel before...
It's not too hard. There should be plenty of HowTos on the web.

[mythtv-users] I am not sure what happened..

2005-01-19 Thread Frutillar
Hi.

When I did all the configuration changes and tests suggested by the
documentation and comments from other members of this list I had LIRC &
TV-OUT on my PVR-350 working. However, in the last reboot both LIRC and the
TV-OUT (X on TV-OUT) stopped working.

I think I had not rebooted for a while, so it must be something that I did
manually and I have not capture in the scripts. I wold appreciate your help

As a fairly new user of mythtv, I have to agree that a help system or
"new user documentation" would be helpful. Something non-technical and
more user manual related. I found that the documentation available for
mythtv was good, and reasonably thorough, although lacking a few
(common?) technical issues, but I have only been able to find a couple
pages worth of how to use mythtv itself. One thing that I thought
rocked about my ReplayTV was it came with a recorded "show" of how to
use the box. It was about a half hour long, and showed how each menu
worked and how to schedule shows, etc.

I'd be willing to help contribute to a user manual, although, I'm
still learning how to use mythtv by trial and error. :)

[mythtv-users] Black screen with Hauppauge 250

2005-01-19 Thread Kevin Smith
I am a new MythTV user trying to set up my first myth box. I have a
Hauppauge 250 that I bought because I wanted hardware MPEG-2 encoding and I
heard support for these cards was good. I first built and installed
ivtv-0.2.0-rc3c and ran mythtv. When I tried to watch tv through myth tv, I
got only a black screen and errors saying:

QSocketDevice::writeBlock: Invalid socket
2005-01-19 11:53:09 Error writing stringlist
Remote encoder not responding.
QSocketDevice::writeBlock: Invalid socket
2005-01-19 11:53:09 Error writing stringlist

over and over forever. If I kill mythfrontend and restarted, trying to
watch TV simply shows a black screen and output:

2005-01-19 11:52:02 Connecting to backend server: 127.0.0.1:6543 (try 1 of
5)

2005-01-19 11:52:10 Unexpected response to MYTH_PROTO_VERSION:
2005-01-19 11:52:10 Changing from None to None

and after a while goes back to the main menu (not infinite errors).
Stopping and restarting the backend again gives the endless errors. I
downloaded ivtv-0.3.0 and installed it (I tried to make uninstall 0.2.0
first, but no target for that...), unloaded and reloaded all the modules.
Same thing.

I decided to try xawtv to see if the card was working. I get:

heard support for these cards was good. I first built and installed
ivtv-0.2.0-rc3c and ran mythtv. When I tried to watch tv through myth tv, I
got only a black screen and errors saying:

QSocketDevice::writeBlock: Invalid socket
2005-01-19 11:53:09 Error writing stringlist
Remote encoder not responding.
QSocketDevice::writeBlock: Invalid socket
2005-01-19 11:53:09 Error writing stringlist
Remote encoder not responding.
over and over forever.

I get:

try launching it from the terminal. It should give you an idea of
whats going on when it bombs out. I had a similar problem and it was
due to it failing to connect to the backend system.

Hope this helps.

Ok i just to test my video card, i put the MX 4000 back in, but didn't
connect the tv, got it to work but it also had the wavy problem. It
must be either the tuner card or the ivtv drivers. So i updated to ivtv
0.2.0-rc3d. It fixed it one time on a couple channels (unfortunately i
didn't think to check them all). But now it's the same and no sound.
I've recompiled the ivtv driver and reinstalled msp3400.o and removed it
like make install tells me to do. Very confused. I've swapped the PVR
to a different pci slot to the same results.Kinda wish i had another
Motherboard to test it in, but it works in windows. I don't know.

[mythtv-users] APT-GET Broke IVTV and Myth

2005-01-19 Thread Jack Trout
Okay, not sure where is right, but I am gonna post here and if no one
answers post everywhere else. Just updated my Fedora Core 2
installation with apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade, which
installed a new kernal and when switching to that kernal I had to also
install a new nvidia kernal module, I think whats missing is that I
dont have the new IVTV kernal module and not sure how to get it, but I
get errors in dmesg
right after the update and a restart My box couldnt change channel and
kept changing guide info but same channel was listed, error read as
unknown tuner type, noticed when it was working that it was
discovering my tuners as type 2 so I set it to type 2 in my
modprobe.conf and could again change channels but still get errors
about unknown tuner type

hopefully this will be an easy fix, anyone else know what I did wrong?

I daresay what's clearly needed most of all is a help system, so
new users do not remain unaware of features and commands open to
them. I'm not too surprised the users are unaware of this, you have
to go into mythweb (which many users might not even know exists)
and set up keystrokes for the jump commands for all your frontends
(independently) then LIRC configuration to have your remote issue those
keys.

If such a help system were to appear (presumably by pressing something
like "?" on any screen) I would be happy to write up some help screens.

Generally you would want screens that explain your options on that
page, any special keystrokes that work only in that area, and links
to master pages of general commands and keystrokes, as well as a link
in mythbrowser (or for that matter firefox) to web pages with more detailed
help

Thus these users would have hit help (The theme would be encouraged
to have '? = help' in the corner of the screen) and help would appear
in the main menu (possibly displacing something else). They would
have had to follow the help chain to general commands which would
have featured a section on "Keystrokes that work anywhere" or
a section perhaps called "How to configure your remote and keyboard
keys to do things". I would recommend there be some predefined
keystrokes, like:
Alt-T -- Watch live TV
Alt-R -- Recordings list (Watch Recordings)
Alt-G -- Program guide for scheduling
Alt-S -- High level scheduling menu
Alt-I -- Info center
Alt-D -- Optical Disks/Dvds

as a possible reasonable default set. I think these are the
most common commands (with Live TV and Recordings List the big
winners by far) but of course heavier users of MythMusic and other
tools will have those on your list.

[mythtv-users] OS X Darwin Port

2005-01-19 Thread Jon Bauerle
Anyone using the OS X Darwin Port of the Myth Front End?
I found a link in a search engine to download it, and can't find
documentation to troubleshoot it! When I launch the app, it bounces
about 3 times, then quits with no error messages. Using MyPHPAdmin, I
verified that the user has full access to the DB, and I did update the
mysql file in my home dir. Any other suggestions?

I think this is a bug which has been fixed, if I remember correctly,
in CVS. I seem to remember seeing something about it on this list a

2005-01-19 Thread Paul Barrette
Has anyone else experienced the jumbling black screen when a
commercial begins? I have all the commercial flagging off, but as
soon as the commercial begins there is typically a black screen.
Myth, then, seems to have a hard time and the is a lot of jitter for a

This really sucks if you are watching "Pitch Black", and it really
puts a damper on my star trek watching.

Any ideas?

I usually use Gnome on my desktops rather than KDE, but I suspect they
have some of the same issues. It just takes a few extra seconds to
fire up the WM, it clutters up the desktop with panels and crap. I
never use the multiple desktops it makes available. It throws a lot of
crud into my home directory. It just dosn't seem to be what's needed
for this application.

I have a couple of ProGear tablet PCs around here and they run a tiny,
mostly unobtrusive WM which gives me a browser and an xterm. And
that's really all I need when I use those tablets.

You can do this now using MythWeb. Go into the Settings section and
then KeyBindings and you can configure keys in the Jump Point editor to
do this. These jumps will then be used anywhere in the frontend.

[mythtv-users] 1 PVR-250 for Digital and Anolog Cable

2005-01-19 Thread Jim Valavanis
OK, I thought I can do this but I'm stumped. I currently subscribe to
Digital comcast cable. I have mythtv recording standard cable only via
the coax-connector directly into the Hauppauge PVR-250 tuner. This
works fine.
So, I wanted to use the S-Video (or component) on the *same* 250 card to
record the digital or higher channels too. What I've done thus far..

1. In mythtv-setup I added another Capture Card (even though I only have
1) to add component4 output. The tuner0 is already setup.
2. Then in Input connections, I enable component4 to use the same
comcast digital cable channels, as the tuner0.
3. Restarted mythtv-backend.

Now when I go to watch Live TV I am able to hit the "C" key and switch
between tuners (component4 and tuner0) and this worked OK for Video
only. The tuner0 input still works fine for both audio and video.
I have the component4 (digital video output from cable) receiving the
video signal fine. I have to manually tune the cable box for now. I'm
planning on setting up the IR blaster for this. The sound is not
working obviously due to no audio input connection to the PVR250. Coax
carries both video and audio, but...
How do I enable the audio for the digital cable? Currently the digital
cable box, has only 2 audio Left/Right outputs that are already going to
the TV's audio in. There is no other available audio out on the cable
box. Do I use a splitter for this? Also should I plug the audio into
the PVR250's "line in"?

Next, if this does work with only 1 PVR250, can I somehow configure the
recordings to use the proper input? component4 for the digital cable,
and tuner0 for the analog?

FYI, The digital cable box is the Motorola DCT5100 that also includes HDTV.
Thanks for all the help!

How do you know it's AGPART causing the problem - is it just because
the only change is a new OS? I ask because I had big CPU usage when I
fooled around with some of the recording settings and changed them
from 480x480 to something which I naively thought would be better.
Only it turned out it was no better - for no improvement in picture
quality I managed to chew CPU cycles like there was no tomorrow. are
you sure nothing's changed on that front for you?

Not sure if this will help, but i just found a neat trick for using the
SPDIF on the xbox (810 module).
In your /etc/modules.conf: (Gentoo use /etc/conf.d/alsa then
modules-update) place the following

options snd-pcm-oss dsp_map=0 adsp_map=2
This will place the analog dsp on /dev/dsp and the spdif on /dev/adsp.
You can then use the standard myth oss drivers.

The only issue is that only one output is active at a time.

Here's what I tried after work tonight: I plugged a CD drive into the
CD in and pressed the play button on the front. Doing 'aplay
/dev/dsp' did result in sound. Plugging the capture card back in and
doing 'xawtv' did NOT result in sound. That has me thinking either
the capture card is bad and not outputting sound, or something weird
is going on. (It's an old Happuage WinTV-Radio if that makes a
difference). The weirdest part is that the sound did come through if
I plug the card into my WinXP system, or at least did the other day.
I guess I'll try that again. I am correct in thinking that using xawtv
should result in the capture card trying to play out sound through the
line right?

Go with 6106, and a resolution of 800x600 and you

NvAGP=3 didn't seem to help much. I think I'm seeing fewer
prebuffering pauses, but X is still taking about 40% and mythfrontend
is taking about 55%. If I enable kernel deinterlacing (which I used

It looks like my only solution is to compile the kernel without
agpgart, unless there's an rpm package out there somewhere. I've
never compiled a kernel before...

i've got a few starchoice receivers (navigo 301, 305, and 401), and none
of them can be controlled via serial port.

however, i bought some parts and built a couple of ir blasters (based on
http://www.lirc.org/improved_transmitter.html ), and they work great
with my receivers.

if you decide to build your own, i can give you a list of the part
numbers that i used.

on a side note, the starchoice DSR500 has 3 USB ports (1 front, 2 back)
and a 10/100 ethernet port ... here's a picture:

http://www.starchoice.com/images/product/dsr500_large_back.jpg
it'd be interesting to see how they could be used ...

[mythtv-users] looking for A7N8X-E sound advice

2005-01-19 Thread John Freer
Hey all:

Wondering if someone could give me suggestions on how to best get the
A7N8X-E Deluxe's SPDIF port working.

Fresh FC3 install

Would appreciate a copy of someone's .asoundrc file and any special
modprobe.conf entries of note.

I've been going over the alsa postings for the 810 module, but
haven't found a working combination yet.

Thanks a lot.

Which is the entire point of what I was saying in the top of that bug report.
Chunking things into little tiny bits totally defeats that purpose.

I can see how there's no easy win. If you enable autoexpire, then
old shows will vanish when the disk fills. If you leave it off,
one new show will get truncated mid-way (oddly this can be more
frustrating than not recording at all depending on where it cuts out)
and no new shows will be recorded until you notice.

Neither outcome is great. All the other PVRs I have seen default
to expiring old recordings, are there others that don't? It is my
taste but it need not be everybody's.

A possible outcome is to make it clear. For example, if a person
sets up a recording and sets it to "allow auto expire" (which is, I
think, the default) they perhaps should get a warning indicating
that this option will not do anything unless they enable global
auto expire. Or perhaps change "Allow Auto Expire" to
"Allow Auto Expire (currently disabled)" or somesuch.

This is a place where help screens could also avoid surprises.

This is a problem I also experienced, and some other folks on nvnews.net
have also encountered it on this very card. I hope nvidia has it in
their bug list.

What I found was you could boot with a monitor plugged in and come up
in console mode.

(Always a very good idea to switch your system to console mode when
trying new graphics cards and parameters.)

Anyway, the kludge was -- boot up with monitor. Get shell prompt.
Unplug monitor and plug in TV set. Type "startx" (you can't see it.)

And it displays on the TV. Stupid, or what? And not a workable long
term solution. If this works for you though, sounds like the same
problem. Occurs with 6111.

Indeed, it creates issues, and requires tools to understand. The merit
lies in making livetv and recording as identical as possible. The more
identical they are, the easier it is to implement things on top of
both. This suggests, I would think, that you want to avoid things that
can happen in one but not in the other. For example it makes conversion
from live to longterm trivial (just flipping some bits.) It even allows
things like changes of quality inside a recording (which as you probably
know Tivo refuses to do when you try to convert a live tv session to
a permanent recording.)

No one part of me feels that live TV is an abberation you are supposed to
get over when you use a PVR and so it's not worth so much effort. If it
weren't the first thing most people encounter, this would be even more
true.

I do see your point that the gains from chunking recordings might be
had other ways (though deletion of the first part of a recording
is probably hard any other way in a low-free-disk environment) though.

The goal though is you would not coalesce the chunks, that the transcoder
and commercial flagger would have to be aware of them just as the
player is. (Not quite as much as they don't need to worry about real
time transitions.)

However, let this not distract from the main goal of some unification,
and hopefully the always-recording goal.

I migrated from FC1 to gentoo to force a bit more performance out of

from KDE to lighter wm's. Did my box absolutely need gentoo or was

This means you never performed the apt-get dist-upgrade operation. In

RE: [mythtv-users] Switching between capture card

2005-01-19 Thread Phil Bridges

Hi all,
I have multiple BT 878 cards in one MythTV. How can I switch between capture
card? The C key only switch between the inputs of one card.

*

On a related note:

I have 2 ivtv cards in my box - a PVR250 and a M179. My M179 is my main
"watch" card, primarily because I tend to record a bit on channels 6-9, and
the M179 doesn't pick those up as well.

Anyway, sometimes I'm watching one of the bad channels through the M179, and
I'll want to switch to the other card, since the picture is better. When I
do this, it won't let me view the channel that the M179 was on. I have to
first change the M179 channel to one I know I won't be watching, and then
Switch cards with "Y". Has anybody else had this problem?

What are you asking? If you are having the problems described in the
forums at nvnews.net, you will need to back off to 6111. The problem
is severe corruption of the screen; if you have it, you couldn't even
run the Myth GUI to see if videos play OK. If you are having some
other problem, it can't hurt to try backing off.

Myth can use OpenGL for syncing with the vertical refresh and for cool

Well it would be black bars on the side of the program if anything
rather than black bars on the top and bottom of the adverts.

In a DVB-T stream there are two ways of handling aspect ratios. For
simple 4:3 vs 16:9 it can be done with a simple flag. In that case
then the transmitted data is always the full picture area and the
flag tells the receiver what aspect ratio to use when displaying
the data - the resolution doesn't change, so would be 720x576 or
704x576 in the UK depending on the channel.

The other option is to use an AFD where a 16:9 picture is transmitted
and if the content is 4:3 then there are black bars on each side. There
is then an Active Format Descriptor (AFD) which indicates which part
of the transmitted picture to display. That allows more choice of
ratios but in the UK at least only 4:3 and 16:9 are used.

Some channels use AFDs in the UK and some use the simple flag. Most
of the AFD channels don't have adverts however, but I think there is
one that does - certainly Five was, but it may have changed recently.

I'm not sure how Myth handles those two cases however, or what you
see in the stream when you read it back from disk.

Here's the code... :)

static BackendSpinBox *AutoExpireDiskThreshold()
{
BackendSpinBox *bs = new BackendSpinBox("AutoExpireDiskThreshold",
0, 200, 1);
bs->setLabel(QObject::tr("Auto Expire Free Disk Space Threshold "

bs->setHelpText(QObject::tr("Trigger AutoExpire when available disk "
"space is below this value. Disable AutoExpire by "
"setting to 0."));
bs->setValue(0);
return bs;
};

The default is 0, why by the definition in the help means that
AutoExpire is Disabled. It seems to make sense to me. You're telling
Myth to keep at least X Gigabytes FREE. If you say 0GB, then Myth won't care
and will let your hard drive fill up. :) The default is 0 because
a lot of people run a lot of people don't want AutoExpire running and
when I added AutoExpire to Myth, I didn't want to add a new feature
that could potentially delete people's recordings if they weren't careful.
I wanted people to have to turn AutoExpire ON.

With a bit of scripting knowledge and a reasonably clean code base for
the web app it shouldn't be too hard to put together something like
that - you'd just need to write a CGI that accepts a a filename and
sends it to mplayer (stopping any other currently running track first,
of course - if you want to get really fancy, you could try
cross-fading :-) ) and then hack the web app so that its play buttons
link to that CGI instead of whatever it uses to do the streaming.

Given a nice, slim web app, this shouldn't take more than 2 hours,
maybe a lot less. I'd look into it, but I'm swamped with other stuff
at the moment.

No, there's no merit there. It's dumb to chunk things in sizes less than one
show long. Breaks easy playback by other programs, takes longer to coalesce
them if you want to transcode, etc.

Is this a physical aspect ratio change or does the frame stay the same
ratio and have black bars on the top/bottom? I have a sample of a UK
broadcast that uses the black bars and will be trying to code up something
to detect that transition so it can be used to determine where commercials
start/stop. If you mean a physical frame aspect ratio change, then I'd
like to detect this at some point but don't have any sample recordings
to test with right now (I'm in the U.S. with analog cable).

I'm not sure what you consider the "normal places". The myhtv manual
builds result in the binaries, etc. being placed into /usr/local/bin.
Most rpm or ebuilds I've seen place the binaries, etc. into /usr/bin.

I've seen several ebuilds floating around. Search this list to find
examples. I believe the ebuild available at
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=66337 is the one that most
gentoo users are using.

I took a whack at creating my own ebuilds based on the work above,
which better fits my needs. Here are my ebuilds if you want to play
with them:

http://threeputt.org/ebuilds/mythtv-0.17_pre.ebuild
http://threeputt.org/ebuilds/mythtv-plugins-0.17_pre.ebuild
http://threeputt.org/ebuilds/mythweb-0.17_pre.ebuild

I run a combined frontend/backend system, so my preference was to have
as few ebuilds as possible, so the mythtv ebuild has what people
normally break up into backend/frontend builds and the mythtv-plugins
has all of the standard myth plugins, plus nuvexport. The mythweb
ebuild, obviously only has the mythweb stuff... :)

These ebuilds are a work in progress, so if you find any problems, I'd
appreciate you letting me know.

Thanks,

Actually, I think there is merit behind the secondary comment. It
makes sense to have really no difference between live tv and recorded
tv. Both should be able to be recorded in chunks, and played back
and seeked-within seamlessly in chunks, I would think.

The live-tv concept becomes just another recording, but it shifts
chunk on a channel change, and has quick auto-expire of old chunks
(based on the desired buffer size)

The use of chunks on regular recording would allow the deletion of
the front of a program. For example, often I have a large movie
on disk, and I watch an hour of it, and am comfortable if that hour
is then free for expiration, while the hour I have not yet watched
should actually become immune from expiration -- because now I really,
really want to watch it. Truncation from the end is easier if the
filesystem supports it, but chunks can also help there. I suppose
sparse files could also be used to accomplish the removal of the front
of a program.

But the key is the first thing you write about, to try and normalize
the two forms so they really use the same underlying tools. I think
this would be a good idea.

Related to this topic, it's my opinion that if you have zero-CPU
encoding cards (pvr-x50, pchdtv) that you want two other behaviours.

a) It should be nearly impossible to lose the live buffer you
are watching. Definitely not simply because you pause and
go to other menus in the system. I do this often. Two people
are watching a show. One person needs to pause. The other
person then wants to do other things with the box -- schedule
other recordings, watch another show while person #1 is doing
what she wants, etc. You can do this watching a recording but
not live TV. Normalizing them would help this.

b) Generally this means not stopping live recording ever except for
scheduled recordings, though this might be an optional feature
because it does mean some disk activity. For example, when you
turn on a Tivo, you can rewind 30 minutes in whatever channel it
was on when you turned it on.

I put these forward as things to consider when debating how to
alter the character of live TV mode.

Re: [mythtv-users] is there an easy way to reboot in software through myth

2005-01-19 Thread Brad Benson
If you're using one of the Fedora/Red Hat distros and you already have
the swatch packages installed then making it run at startup is as
simple as logging in to your box as root and typing "/sbin/chkconfig
swatch on". chkconfig is a very easy to use tool that allows you to
configure which services are started and stopped in each runlevel on
your box. Try /sbin/chkconfig --list to see a list of all services
and their default modes in each runlevel.

Re: [mythtv-users] Controlling mythmusic from mythweb

2005-01-19 Thread Scott Nicholson
Well, personally I prefer a web interface over picking music with a
remote control. I realize that I can ssh into the mythbox and run
mplayer, but I just find it a bit strange that with all the impressive
looking streaming web apps that seem to be out there, I can't find a
single one that has an option of sending the files to mplayer instead of
streaming them.
Netjuke (http://www.netjuke.org) can do that -- it supports three
different modes. It can stream files over an http connection, or you can
use it to control a shoutcast/icecast playlist, or you can use it to
control a server-side playlist (which you would then play with mplayer).

I haven't used it this way myself, so I can't tell you how well it
works, but I've been very happy with the web streaming side of things.

note: this is v1 I'm talking about. Development on v1 stopped quite a
while ago and the project seemed dead, but recently the developers have
started working on v2 and have released a beta or two. Having tried the
v2 betas, I'd recommend sticking with v1 at the moment.

Hmmm, by any chance is your vlc install in /usr/local/bin ? Most
likely /usr/local/bin is not in the default path of the user (apache?)
running your web server. The easiest thing to do would be to hard-code

I use ratpoison. This is a lightweight, low disk space hog, mouse-less

It works very well and is simple to use. There's a very small amount

[mythtv-users] dvd playback via usb2.0

2005-01-19 Thread Aaron Hall
I am attempting a MythTV setup where I must have the dvd drive in an
external enclosure, connected to the PC via usb2.0.
I can connect the USB DVD drive, mount and playback (via mplayer), but it is
very choppy, some part of the system cannot keep up. This is true if played
from mythfrontend or command line.

Sadly, if I do the same experiment on a XP box with the same speed
processor, it plays DVDs just fine. I note that even an XP box can playback
via USB1.0 better than my linuxbox.

My limited understanding of DVD playback is that DMA from the DVD drive to
the HD is very important for smooth playback. But I'm not sure how to
accomplish this via USB.

Anyone have any suggestions for smoothing up the DVD playback?

I have a Celeron 2GHz, 256Mram, a pioneer DVD drive, using Fedroa Core 2,
with kernel 2.6.8-1.521, myth .16 driving out to a nvidia GeForce MX400,
with nvdia 6629 drivers.

Thanks,
Aaron

Re: [mythtv-users] Re:Multiple frontends watching the same backend program.

2005-01-19 Thread Andrew J
In my mind, what I'd like it to do when I
select "live tv" when the tuner is already in use is to inform me
what's going on, then take me directly to the recording in progress.
I'm thinking of it as the satellite box my Dad used to have, where you
could change the channel from any tv, but everyone got the same show.
For those of you who have seen tivo, he means just like TiVo does. If
its recording a show and you press livetv it takes you to the 'live'
part of the recording. From here you can't change channel unless you
cancel the recording. But you can do trick play etc on the current show
or go back to the start of it and watch it.

I think borrowing this feature would be a great idea if it doesn't have
it already.

try making sure you dont accidentally have your pcm volume set to full

also make sure your muting that input so it playes what it records,

I had this problem, from the command line run:

which vlc

This will give the location of where vlc is installed on your machine,
then open up mythstream.sh and on the line near the bottom where it
says vlc -I dummy, etc... add in the full path to vlc, so on mine it
reads:

/usr/local/bin/vlc -I dummy, etc.

That should fix it.

I know nothing about Fedora. That being said the 2.6 kernel has support
for the ati rf remote. There are patches/modules for older kernels, I
think.

Once thats loaded and you get some letters when you press buttons on the
remote, you then load xev to figure out the keys and then create a file
like .Xmodmap to map them as you need them.

sakura root # cat .Xmodmap
keycode 233 = period
keycode 158 = Escape
keycode 146 = M
keycode 108 = Next
Then run
xmodmap .Xmodmap
This sounds quite different from what your doing, so it may not help...

In gentoo, if you don't specify a window manager in /etc/rc.conf (or in
your home directory) you get a really simple one that I think may be a
part of Xfree/Xorg. Maybe it has a name. I don't know.

At any rate, if your really not doing anything but Myth on the box, I'd
think that would be adequate... Of course if you are doing any other
work, well that window manager is quite annoying.

Initially, I was running without a window manager, but this proved to be
problematic for things that used an external program, like MythVideo and
MythGame. The keyboard focus wasn't behaving nicely.

Then I tried using ratpoison, based on advice from numerous threads on
the same topic that you can find in the list archives.

Then I wanted to use xrandr to switch resolutions based on the source
material (for HDTV signals so that Myth isn't converting 1080i to
720p). This required a change to wmi ("window manager improved"). My
only complaint about wmi is that it pops up an xterm with the man page
when it starts up, and I haven't been able to figure out how to stop
that (the documentation says it only does it the first time, but it
seems to always think it's the first time--I'm near to the point of
patching the code to replace the command with /bin/true).

I would suggest going with Linux. That's what I did, and my system
works great.

For details, check the list archive. What, you didn't know that there
was a list archive? Well, it should be an obvious-enough concept to

Lots of people here using stuff like Fluxbox and other *boxes, EvilWM,
RatPoison... all of them are pretty lightweight and require the bare
minimum of external libraries, if any. None of my Myth boxes have Gnome or
KDE installed, and Qt is pretty much the only GUI library I have.

XFCE is quite popular for people who want a lightweight WM/DE but still
want a fairly good desktop for non-Myth usage; for a dedicated box, it's

I'm not sure which permission to tweak, if that's the problem. Any suggestions?

Btw, thanks all for the help. This is a very, very cool feature.
Thanks Joshua for taking the time and sharing!

[mythtv-users] Looking for a *nix DAAP client & player w/Ogg support

2005-01-19 Thread Joseph A. Caputo
So, I've got my Myth box serving out my music collection with mfd. Now
I can use the mfe plugin (just for experimentation, mythmusic is still
more mature...), and I can listen to music via iTunes on my wife's
iBook. But, what do I use to access my collection from another Linux
box? I have a little VPN set up at work to access my home network, but
the only DAAP client software I can find is Java-based, doesn't provide
much of an interface, and (worst of all) only plays mp3s. Most of my
collection is in Ogg Vorbis, so this is problematic.

I've tried setting up netjuke, and while it works, it seems like I
should be able to do everything with just mfd (after all, isn't that
the whole point of DAAP?). There are several DAAP server solutions for
Linux, but the only native client solution seems to be mfd/mfe.
Unfortunately, running mythfrontend on my workstation at work is not a
good option.

So, anyone come across a DAAP client player for Linux w/Ogg support?

Aaaaghh! Another reason to have a user based system in myth. Then
things like this can be stored against the user.
Or they could be stored per-frontend, might make things a bit simpler
(info's already there.)

Re: [mythtv-users] Mythtv Distro Help

2005-01-19 Thread Alex
I have the same basic equipment running under FC3 with a P4-2.4/865
chipset platform. All installed pretty readily without much issue.
This was my first experience installing Linux.

The only thing that gives me troubles is my ATI remote... Jarrod's
guide (which was quite helpful) assumes one is using a remote with the
PVR card. I don't have such an option on the PVR250-MCE. I can use
the built-in kernal "ati-remote" function, but the key mapping doesn't
match. Trying to use lirc_atiusb has been a tragic failure of my time
invested. The links I found are out-dated and don't apply in my case.
